Dark side of planets still not dark

Didn't read the whole thread, but I'll say this.
I've been to places where there are literally no lights at all. The ambient light just from the stars (no moon) was way more than enough to read a book by. Humans we're distinguishable at roughly 1 km or farther.
I figure the in game light for the dark sides of planets is perfectly reasonable.

Yeah? Nooo...
I regularly go to dark sites on new moon and I can barely see my hand in front of my face. I find everything by touch. The stars are beautiful, though.
I can tell you with 100% accuracy that you can't read a book with starlight. Unless you have 12" lenses confront of your eyes..
Not necessarily, but could be more likely due to light pollution or atmospheric scattering, sky glow etc. than direct light from stars.
Also you are using a comparison of a world that has an atmosphere against those that don't

NB: Yes, I *have* been exposed to too many rads/hazmats.

oh wait, i've been on the internet for over 20 years. Nothing bothers me.
My eyes are surprisingly good. And my night vision is awesome.
It's still not dark.

Doom 3 immediately comes to mind.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is super dark, and you have limited oil in your lamp. The dark actually hurts you by driving you insane. Having your lamp out stops the effect. Lighting torches and candles does too, but you need tinder boxes, and they are limited.
Lots of horror games, actually.
Night time in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games is super dark.

Thanks for that list. Any more recent titles you're aware of, preferably not something with an explicit horror theme? You know, one of the reasons people usually refuse true darkness in games is because they don't like horror. I think the horror genre is a niche in its own and I doubt turning ED into that direction would be a good advice (from FD's financial point of view).
Night time in DayZ can be extremely dark if you turn gamma down
The Chronicles of Riddick games (Escape from Butcher Bay and Dark Athena) are really dark, too. They're like that to make use of his night vision.

Night time can be extremely dark in any game if you turn brightness down.
If you want you can have a completely black screen in ED!
Or just turn off your monitor...

Just saying that night in DayZ is dark. Very dark. It's extremely stressful on hardcore (1st person only) servers. Even with gamma up, it's dark.

Arma 3 , no moonlight and you cant see a thing without nightvision or a torch.
Not to get too technical, but keep in mind that they can't make the game as dark as we'd like simply because most people still use cheap TN panel monitors, which crush blacks and makes the shades look like pixelated bands as they fail to blend together. If you want the game to look dark and have similar colors blend well into each other, get a high quality 10-bit color IPS display.
