Thargoids hu

It's no secret that the world of Elite takes a very pessimistic view of the future, to the point that I honestly sometimes have a very hard time following the logic.

So realism rather than an unrealistic and fake utopia is pessimism to you.

So let me pose a question, do you think there are any black thargoids? Are we going to see any evidence of divergent evolution among the 'goids at all? It seems unlikely, and it would be pretty out of genre.

Lol Thargoids are an Insectoid Species. They think very differently. There are two types of Thargoids, one is peaceful and the other warlike.

Time and again, all through sifi, we see humanity as the only space fareing species that's managed to create a galactic civilization which exists in relative peace without needing to first cleanse our species of all genetic variation.

Why would that be needed? The skilled and talented move up in society and the unskilled and stupid occupy the bottom of society in most cases.

Sure, realism, you could call it that.

And there's no reason to believe this represents a genetic divide.

I don't know, why don't you ask every other species in sifi?

Perhaps their genetic diversity is shown in a different way - e.g. smell or taste rather than colour.*

*It's probably best to ask a thargoid first before licking them to test this hypothesis.

There are indication in the Dark Wheel and the FFE lore that Oresrians and Klaxians are physically different.
Thorax markings, leg joints, colour and size.
They may also have different physics, depending on their role in the hive.

We just have to see how it plays out in ED.

I suppose we are bound to project human diversity and sense of the individual on them.

What if they have a hive mind and no concept of self? What if there are no analogies to our understanding of self?

Meant to be all insecy aint they? so I guess they will look kinda insect. Whatever colour that may be.

Please FD not beige.

This is how I think they will be as well, Henry.
Distributed being with a shared consciousness controlled by the queen perhaps.

I guess we need to decide whether we want fiction to portray some connection with reality or not. This is the main reason why I can't watch many 'Hollywood' movies as I tend to like my fiction with more of a connection to reality, to the degree with which we define our moral judgements of character motivations and actions. The historical definition of cowboys and Indians along with hero and villain hasn't helped at all because reality does not neatly separate itself into the extreme categories of good vs evil. It's more about the immensely varied soup of biology, society, culture and history that defines our actions and attempting to pigeon hole them into the artificial terms of 'good guys' and 'bad guys' is just childish and pathetic.

My hope is that the narratives of Elite Dangerous help us to see that terms such as Good and Evil are obsolete in effectively defining the actions of all species within the galaxy.

I call it a 'trap of consciousness' how, with almost obsessive addiction, we attempt to distil reality and all its variety into simple meaningless words such as good/bad, simple/complex etc.

Excellent post. Repped.

Sadly, I don't know how much in the way of nuances DB requires within the Thargoids, so we may get just one vanilla brand of Thargoids rather than a cultural variety of behaviour which is across the spectrum from good and bad.

I'll try to always ask first, promise! :D

Thanks...I remember DB mentioned that he was interested in the cultural differences that aliens may have in terms of their motivations, so I hold out some hope but we have yet to see how his vision is executed. Here's hoping it's not just a matter of 'we like ammonia and you like water so we kill you', etc. It takes a lot of insight and skill to see the galaxy without the hard-wired biology and social/cultural influences of humans, while making a game that's interesting to humans :). I'm hoping for some extraordinary and unexpected motivations that don't resolve into war just for the sake of drama but I could be asking for too much.

I would also hope for an alien species that doesn't even have a concept of good and evil. So many concepts that humans cling to are just not based on reality but instead the virtual and separate worlds that exist in our heads. Things such as simplicity/complexity, good/evil and other things such as self-image are all aspects and expressions of our human consciousness, not physical components of reality. If we could just let go of these artificial concepts then we all may be better off, alas most people think that removing such things as the concept of self-image is in actual fact negative self-image, which just demonstrates the inability to separate oneself from these culturally perpetuated social constructs. Perhaps an alien species has managed to accomplish this?

The Oresrians seem from T. James' description to be intelligent, practical and survival focused.

Consepts like good/evil, anger, revenge, compassion or pitty are probably meaningless to them.
Collective survival is the concept that drives them.

When they don't attack us, it's not because they are peaceful. They have calcualted that this is the favoured response, to achieve their goal.

This may even include boosting our equipment, to make us harder oponents to Klaxian ships.

To derail a bit - every time I discover an earth like/ammonia planet I always fly to it's dark side to see if maybe... just maybe there's something there...

That would be much more awesome than just super advanced killer pricks. And yes, I know I might as well search for Santa's sled in USSs.

I have it on good authority (and I'm backed up by traditional sci-fi on this one) that all bad Thargoid have beards.
