Not just recent surveys. Polls and surveys for over two years have consistently shown exploration is extremely desired among the players. I agree, you'd think Frontier would put a higher priority on developing for it.

I'm not sure why they created such a massive (yet non-interactive) galaxy. I can only assume that it was a bit of a vanity project.

It was a vanity project, David Brabens vanity project.

He started with a tiny galaxy in the original elite, then in FEII he was able to map the whole milky way but with low graphics due to the tech at the time.

And now he was able to create the whole galaxy with beautiful graphics at our expense, using procedural generation, which he would probably divorce his wife to marry if it was a physical thing he loves it that much .

It is a lovely galaxy for sure, just a very very empty one unfortunately.

Haven't you noticed, as soon as a new discovery is made , it's almost immediately added into the game?

But yet actual game mechanics take months or years to be improved on.
