Never First Discovered, But...

It seems that I am reduced to scanning asteroid belts, and being the first to scan iceballs into EDDN.

Thanks for the great placeholder!

I've gone up and down the Z axis, 8's around a point, random walks determined by dice, alternating economic routes with random jumps...

Nothing compares with the guys stealing nebula's from each other, on the outer spiral arms. They must have low berths, or something, to alter personal time perception.

I don't drink, so I cannot resort to that solace.

1%'/rs, enjoy your dominance, You. Have. Won.

Because every star system in the galaxy has been discovered?

Nyet, my good Lizard. Because it requires human lifetimes to accomplish. Count every grain of sand in the Sahara, the 1% guys will never admit all the good stuff has been taken.

Those firsts Jenner and me picked up tonight in that other thread were only 1200 ly from Shinrarta.

Such a tiny % of the galaxy is tagged, they're everywhere. :)

I do drink... but not sure that's relevant. :)

Hardly any of the good stuff has been taken if you ask me, and while I'm not sure I know what a 1%'er is, I don't think I'm one. When I do my (generally couple of week) exploration tours, I find tons of undiscovered water worlds, a few earth-likes and a very few ammonia worlds. I generally come home with 100+ first discovered systems (which are the only ones I scan), and all of them have 'good stuff' in them, whether they be terra-formable HMC worlds, or the above mentioned exciting stuff (although frankly water worlds are not that exciting :) ).

I don't think I've ever been more than 6k Ly from my starting point, for what that's worth. :)

EDDB only has something like 12m systems registered, and there's 400 billion out there. Pretty sure there's still lots to mark ;)

the Force Is With You.

Me, not so much. They kicked me out of Webelos...

Thank you, Mr 1%. :)

Thus spake the #1 system stealer of all. :)

Quite seriously, I've been on for 13 hours or so, and I'm getting more than a little frustrated.

There is no casual aspect to this game. You have to be time-rich, to play it.

What scares me is that the time commitments, for the non-combat player, are going to drive new customers off.

Elite does not have a new car smell any more. It smells (inside) like every space geek has tried it at least once.

That GenCon/ComicCon smell.

The ship needs a thorough decontam.

I just got back from my first expo tour yesterday., only 8kLy's, and let me tell you..
those juicy first's arre quite plentiful.,, and im not jus tlking dead moons.

I found many, many firsts.. water worlds, amonias only a handful of earthlike's.
One of my favorites was a double sized ringe'd water world.

The rocky bodies will make you cry after a couple days of taking the time to scan entire bodies rock for rock..

I actually became so impatient i started skipping undisco's... (I Knowww blasphemy)

There are still plenty of systems that are unclaimed, but you need to head out at least 1K or 2K towards a non-obvious destination (don't head towards nebulas or other flashy areas).

I was floored a few weeks ago when I got "first" credit for a system out near the Alien Ruins. I figured all of those systems had been claimed long ago. I didn't even know I'd found it, until I sold my explorer data.

I can understand your frustration. There are a lot of time-sinks in this game. It can be aggravating at times, but often, I like the slower pace. It is part of what makes ED unique.

Lately, I've only been playing for an hour or so every night, but I've spent as much as 5 hours a day for weeks at a time. I've racked up over 1500 hours in-game, over 2 years. That's an average of 2 hours per day, so it's possible to make decent progress without a huge amount of spare time.

It's much easier to earn money than it used to be. If you want to claim some "firsts", grind some credits until you can get a decent explorer ship, like a Diamondback or an AspX, maybe engineer the FSD and fly out of the bubble and back, for, say, 2-4 weeks (of real life time) on an exploration quest. Honk every system. Scan the suns and any other high-value targets. Check the system maps; many of the outer objects won't be claimed, even if the "easy" objects were scanned. You'll get some "firsts" and millions of credits.

If you're worried about boredom, consider joining an expedition and fly with other commanders. o7

I picked up two occupied escape pods, and returned them safely to the bubble.

Those should have been massive plot hooks.

Unlock a system, engineering mod. Or, a bounty hunter chasing you.

I did that once and got made out to be a criminal....

( honestly tho, i can't say I wouldn't have sold/delivered them to the highest bidder...)

Flight Routes or amount of time searching is irrelevant. You're simply in the wrong place. If you'd spend 5 of the 13 hours flying towards the center, you could have spent the rest of the time doing nothing but making first discoveries.
Because making 100 first discoveries isn't really that much more difficult than making just 1, once you're in the right place.

I went to VY Canis Majoris last week, about a 1 or 2 hour trip. I made 4 or 5 neutron star boosts, and set my personal record max jump distance, of 224LY. I fully tagged 2 completely undiscovered systems on that trip. Found a pair of ringed binary planets orbiting a fantastic purple star, so close that I was still fuel scooping as I flew down to land on the surface. And the Supergiant star destination was completely worth the trip.

Strangely, I consider this the least committal aspect of Elite. From my perspective, the curve to get up to speed on Combat seems very steep, something bigger than I will probably ever undertake. (By this I mean, fully unlocking the Corvette/Cutter, all the engineers... I only have 3 of them unlocked... plus the rolls to get competitive stuff.)

The exploration seems so much more approachable, for me. I crossed the galaxy on the Distant Worlds expedition with only a basic Asp Explorer build, and $2 million credits in cash. Granted, that took me 3 or 4 months. But it was also more than 1 year ago now, IIRC. And during that year of still playing (all in the bubble) I've not accomplished anything worth mentioning, really. Just puttering around doing stuff.

I'd recommend heading in toward the core, or out toward the edge more. Also, once you get out to a place to "explore" switch to using the economy jumps. Tons of tiny hops, catching every possible system, with minimal (practically zero) time spent on fuel scooping needs.

If you spend 13 hours traveling and not finding any undiscovered systems, then you are doing something very, very, very, wrong.

Once you get 2000 ly out or so from the bubble, don't care how "popular" the route may be, it is extreemly rare to find another discovered system outside of a nebula or blackhole.
