I think it's more to do with third-party resellers, like Game. If Game buy 100 units but only sell 70 then FDev have sold 100 units, but there are only 70 new players.

No, it most probably doesn't mean that. They sold 1 million units on steam, the remaining 1.75 are most likely Mac, Xbox, PS4 and Frontier Store.

While you are all patting each other on the backs for being awesome, I would be interested to know the % of people who bought ED ( which certainly an impressive number ) that continue to play it after a couple of months.

Glad I do. Shame you can't see the very good game that we have. Yes it has some rough edges which need looking at, but on the whole, it is a very good game.
