Is there a new story driven campaign with 2.4?

I was a bit exaggerating, but Ruins and Unknown Structure both have bugs that hindered progression in open play. So to be correct it's not "solo only" but it's more: "hopefully not with open-only bugs".

Don't really know details what it was back in the ruins - something with the puzzle didn't resolve in open as many people wrote here on the forum - and now here in the unknown structures many people have problems activating the Unknown Link and this happens only in open. It's not the end of the world. It's more a mild annoyance, but since I am typing-happy today I felt I had to say this here - as sort of reminder - to watch this "problem" that has occured now at least twice in a similar fashion.

Hmm, well, as the writer of the Ancient Ruins FAQ ;) it was actually only possible to solve the ruins in Open at first (solo was fixed recently). Not heard any issues with Structures in open either - initial activation of the machine was a group of CMDRs on twitch.

So really you should have been asking for them to work in solo ;) But hey, FD - what are they like!

Oh really? Maybe I should not give too much on rumors. Right. Then it's only a bug that happens from time to time at the Unknown Structure. There are several bug-reports about this - but changing modes helps usually. Most reports sayd, and this was also my experience - that the Unkonwn Link was only spawned in Solo or Group. For me it was solo. Instance switching in open did not help. But I am derailing. What ever. I hope the only bugs we'll meet are the Thargs!

The plan is to have a dedicated forum section for this so it hopefully won't be all over. The mods, Brett, and myself will be working to keep the spoiler content to a very specific section so that it's not in everyone's faces who want to experience the new content for themselves.

Wait, we will be able to experience the Thargoid "content" for ourselves?

Like the hyperdictions and Thargoids at barnacles "experience for ourselves" or for real?
If it's like the hyperdictions and Thargoids at barnacles youtube videos will be the only way to see something.

I fully expect to never see Thargoids even after trying for days. So, yea, please make an extra youtube channel so we can experience the new content for ourselves.

I'm hoping there is visible new gameplay when 2.4 arrives. Don't want to just be sitting around waiting for other people doing cryptic crossword puzzles in another thread somewhere! They need to ramp up the actual action a bit or there will be much forum crossness.

Does anyone know if there is and how long is it approximately. 10 hours, 30 hours campaign?

NMS just got a 30 hour new campaign so I wonder if thargoid return is something like a story?

Wrong game.
Elite never has been that type of game.

But I would welcome a story driven campaign someday, but not now.
First the games needs to become more finished, more feature complete.
Once we can land on atmospheric planets and can walk around a story driven campaign would be awesome.

FD might sell it as a separate product for those who want it. They could throw in a separate campaign cmdr slot and a new ship or two to seduce us :).
I would certainly be willing to pay full price for a lengthy single player story campaign.
I'd love to start out on a planet, and slowly work my way up to the ownership of a spaceship, with all kinds of intrigue along the way.
It would be a dream come true for me.

Not among those who understand the complexity of a huge project like this.
There will always be whiners, no matter what FD does.
Sadly that is the biggest horror of forums like this.

I just think if it's an extension of the drip feed of cryptic clues and mysterious sites you need to look on the internet to find it might be a bit of an anti-climax that they'll struggle to recover from. I love all that stuff but think people would have reasonable grounds to moan a bit if something pretty dramatic doesn't happen. They might legitimately build up to increasingly dramatic things, but it needs to start with a bang too!

Alright, thanks for the heads up folks. So at least we will see some missions related to the Thargoids since that is the current design.

Would it really be so hard to introduce a Thargoid Campaign. It could use the corrent design with a lengthy chained mission system?

I dont Think its the wrong game just because we would like a Campaign. In NMS 1.3 the new Campaign is optional gameplay and is a chain of missions.

Well, anyway, I Think I will dust of my Rift again to experience the Thargoid content. As Beautiful as NMS is the immersion with VR is hard to put down :)

Been bouncing back and forth between here and NMS as of late. The new story stuff has been very interesting to say the least.
Still haven't seen another glowing orb (player), but that's ok. I did use my first portal and that was pretty neat, but I may have triggered an unpleasant bug as well. Time will tell there.

Elite has no "story mode", nor much in the line of story per-se. We ARE the story, living it out day by day. Thargoids are more like events - kind of like those [pejorative deleted] groups with their protest marches, rallying for what they already have, just because their candidate lost.

Landing on on atmospheric planets - sign me in.
Walking? Elite was never walking simulator but first and foremost spaceship simulator.
Certainly not before any meaningfull in-game experienced storyline is developed. Even series of connected missions where future missions depend on your choices regarding previous missions would be cool.
Not to mention something akin to 'nemesis' system from Shadow of Mordor where NPC, which ships you destroyed but were able to get into POD, are coming back to have their vengenance.

Don't expect separate story mode or campaign - FD will deliver both story and interaction integrated within game. I expect just more interaction with Thargoids, most possibly some new additional gameplay related to them (military service for example), etc. Game is a story, and story is a game.

Elite was never in color either, then it was.
Elite was never 3d either, then it was.
Elite was never 64 bit, then it was.

It's the natural evolution of a game - once it looked like this:

And as long as there's even one single person who whines, that's the same thing as any other number of people whining. Therefore, *anyone* who has any complaints about *anything* will always be wrong, and Frontier will always be right, no matter what.

I played original Elite and Frontier so I know that there is progress.

Oh look doom did progress too yet you can't fly spaceships there yet. Wonder why...

Well, except, you know, David stating multiple times in the past that he wants to stand up from that chair in ED. First version of games planned in early 2000s had you to begin as person without ship.

Reason why he started with ships and space because it matters more of course. Doesn't mean he doesn't want to extend or complete his vision. If FD will be able to do that reminds to be seen, but they are doing everything to get there.

Per the announcement...

We want The Return to surprise and shock you as much as possible, but that said,

I'm wondering if the "shock and awe" will be kind of like this:

and.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYq-XJ5XfkI&list=PLCh3v0uyU_74QUWbjUUY7AjRW2RUWx9KP

And then outposts, stations , and bases being blown up. (no more stacked missions from them!)

Perhaps it's been taking "too long" to fix the 'ploits at Ceos, Sothis, and Robigo, because the Thargoids are going to "fix" them in 2.4, lol

But if Nu-Doom2 brought in craft you could fly, along with the hellish nightmare of ground-based FPS combat, would you refuse to play it or would you jump in, head-first, with a resounding "Hell yeah!"?

I am not against any additional features, modes and/or content.
What I am trying to say, and possibly failing doing so, is that budget and time constraints are probably too big to execute 'space legs' to a AAA standard along with other features that have been planned/hinted in any forseable future (10 year development plan financed solely by microtransactions ?).
Certain other space sim with budget uncomparably bigger is struggling for years to iron out FPS mode and to incorporate it properly with the rest of the game (for various reasons admitedly).
Everything is doable but I would rather have fully fleshed out space sim than bare bones FPS tacked to there-is-something-to-be-desired space sim.
