Class II gas giant value?

I'm out in the black, half exploring, half barreling towards Colonia to deliver a mission. After that I'm gonna take a trip to Sag A*.

I've found a lot of nice systems and bodies, and am looking forward to get to Colonia, so that I don't have the mission deadline forcing me to skip scanning and exploring stuff :)

There's one thing I've been wondering about for a while now, though:
Why are class II gas giants data worth so much more than data for the other classes? Is there something special about them that greatly differs them from the others? Is there a scientific explanation to this, or are the base values chosen randomly?

We don't yet know a reason. It certainly isn't because they are rarer than other types.

It is possible that, once flying in / mining gas giants becomes a thing, that Class IIs will in the future have stuff harvested from them (valuable gases etc) that can't be found in other gas giant types.

Might be. The only thing I found on Wikipedia, is that class II's have water clouds:

But it would seem strange that this alone should boost the average scan value by ~30x compared to the other classes...

Is there a place I can ask David Braben about this? Maybe he knows :p :)

See, it's one thing to be hopeful. But quite another to go stating your hopes and dreams as fact ;)

Considered that(from wikipedia):
Even though the clouds on such a planet would be similar to those of Earth, the atmosphere would still consist mainly of hydrogen and hydrogen-rich molecules such as methane.

If you want to harvest methane from a gas giant, you don't have to go to the far vastness of space to do so.

You'd just have to come visit me. I live in Norway. Bring cheese. :p :D
 
It is most likely because their temperatures are most suitable for humans to travel in their clouds, because the temperature up there is right.

I wonder what the escape velocity would be to get away again if anyone ever ventured into the atmosphere of any gas giant?

I posted a thread before about this (asking if anyone knew why Class II were so much more valuable) - nobody new then either.

Jupiter's escape velocity is 59.5 km/s while Earth's is a measly 11

Escape velocity is not a concern for our super vertical thruster tech! \o/
You can move Sag A* if you'd mount a pair of E rated Sidewinder thrusters on it.

I recently spent some eurobucks on frontier store to buy nameplates for my ship... I would've also bought a rainbow-hued thruster exhaust, heck I'd pay many eurobucks for it, but alas no rainbow-colouring was available and so I had to settle for "pink" (and have something of a buyer's remorse, it's bit too ehh... dark reddish / purplish to look a proper pink to me)

Sudarsky class is pretty much a function of temperature, so these two posts basically describe the same condition.

This is the best explanation I have seen, anyway. What confuses me is that there is a type of "gas giant with water-based life" that should theoretically be to class 2 gas giants, as Earth-like worlds are to terraforming candidates. They give the same payout as all the other gas giants though, so I don't know what FDEV are up to here.

The presence of alien life forms contaminates what ever it is we'll one day be extracting from them and makes it worthless?

The same reason that Helium giants and Water Giants are worth barely anything, despite being extremely rare: Only FDev knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
