ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Hmm I have been loooking at current graphics cards and if I am not mistaken, unless you want to pay between 1500€ and 2500€ for one graphics card, there is currently no graphics card that would play E: D at 75+fps constantly, am I right?

Since SLI and crossfire are a no go the smartest thing would be to wait till next year before even thinking about upgrading the gpu.

What graphics cards cost between 1500€ and 2500€?

I have a 780TI and can just about keep above 75 FPS with the DK2 with E:D graphics set to HIGH.

VR is cutting edge tech so you can probalby expect to pay cutting edge prices.

that being said, I disagree with those prices.

My GTX 670 cost £165 over 6 months ago..... this is fine for DK2 ED VR at low settings.

I believe a GTX 780 would be just fine for ED at medium settings with DK2. This costs..... I dunno, maybe £250 (a guess you would need to check)

but this is almost a throwback to how PC gaming used to be..you want all the eyecandy you have to pay.

in a way the last few years have not been great for high end PC owners, as there has not been a lot to really show off the ultra high end gear.

It was ages before games like F1 GP2, or Strike commander or duke nukem 3D (the proper one) or crysis could be played at full bubble even on top end rigs.

VR is a throwback to that.

Is the 780ti so much better than the 680? :( and I just bought the 680 a year ago :( This reminds me of the late 90s!

ASUS R9 295X2 -> 1500€

ASUS GeForce GTX TITAN Z -> 2799€

(at least at a german online retailer)

Yes but I wouldn't upgrade my GPU to play on medium settings, maximum would be my goal, and that doesn't seem feasible right now, especially if you keep in mind that the current graphics card would then have to be replaced again once the CV1 is out...

I hit about 80+ fps in stations and asteroid fields on max settings with my rig. Im using an i5 4670k OC'ed to 4.4Ghz and an OC'ed MSi Twin Fozr 780TI.

I would say wait for the 880, should be a cheaper than the 780ti and maybe a little faster. And its out in a few months, so they say!

that is your choice............. you may want to wait and see what the GTX 880 will be like. that may "do". and will (rumoured) cost around $399. (or was that $499 you will have to check)

PS titans are not good bang for buck. the 780ti makes a lot more sense (and even that is a pricey card at the moment for what it offers over the 780... but again, that is your choice).

Zotac do some nice factory overclocked gear for decent prices. I would look there for a good priced card which is faster than stock.

I must check this post every 15 minutes to see if DK2/SDK4 is supported yet. I know Frontier have probably a million more important things to sort, but even a very rough estimate of when we can expect support would be great! "Next week", "Within a couple of weeks", "By the end of August", anything to help a grown man act his age!

wow and here I was about to order the kit.. I imagine this is going to stump sales a lot, I mean if we have to run games at 60+ FPS to not feel drunk in game people are going to have to have super computers to really enjoy it...:S

I have an i7 with 16Gb ram and an NVidia 660.
Mine runs smooth on medium settings.

Give me a buzz when you are in front of your PC...
No reason it shouldn't be working perfectly...
Lack of head tracking usually means you haven't killed the two processes properly or in the correct order.
The config app should grey out ... That's normal
Don't panic, its likely something simple...
If not, you can give your DK2 to me so I can play couch knights with the missus! :p
This was the problem I had. Having the service running and the config tool open meant that the resolution ratio was screwy and no head tracking.
I terminate the config and services before even opening up the launcher.

When starting ED, or enabling OR for the 1st time, make sure you hold the DK2 in the default position in front of the camera (or put it on your head so you can peek out the bottom. If you don't then ED will use the current position of the DK2 as default and F12 doesn't work for me so I can't reset it.
I have four monitors and DK2 gets registered as the 3rd...so if you have more than 1 monitor you may have to pick something other than secondary monitor , in the gfx options, to run ED on the DK2.

Weird that the f12 isn't working ... What does it say for oculus config in controls... Is there a key bind?

For those that are posting fps in rift mode how do you know the figure? Guessing? I can't see any frame rate counter!

two ways to do it.

1) use fraps and run a benchmark - it'll spit out your min, max and average framerates over 60 seconds (to a file)
2) get into game wearing the rift, then go to graphics options and switch to the main monitor but leave rift mode enabled. Turn off vsync and apply. You should now see your rift display on your main monitor and can look about using the headset in your hands. Press Ctrl+F and the framerate will appear in the top left.

As much as option 2 is a bit weird, I've found that the rates I see in the corner aren't appreciably different from those taken by fraps.

It seems to be intermittent with me. Sometimes I fire up and f12 will center the display without issue, sometimes I need to go into menus and out again, and sometimes it just never works or just starts working at some indeterminate point down the line.

I am not surewhy but in my key bindings, reset oculus rift had no key in it.

so i manually stuck F12 in there and it works fine.

Normally it is ctrl + F no idea if the rift changes the keybinding for the fps counter.

It may be the same key binding. I'll try removing a lens and see if it's visible in the top left of the screen.

EDIT: sorry. Missed HurricanePilots post above.

I must admit that id like the game upgrading to the new SDK too, but we've come up with a pretty decent workaround for the time being... :D
