Project: Outer Limits

Project: Outer Limits
First Expedition: The Perseus Expedition

Introduction

There is a vast, vast galaxy out there. Current estimates range from less than 1% to just at 1% of the galaxy being discovered so far from what my research has shown me, although someone out there may have more accurate data on this than I do. At any rate - I feel that it is a very small percentage of the galaxy that has been discovered, and we in the Ohmoeba National Empire (O.N.E.) would like to change that. Even if it's only by a small percentage, or even a tiny percentage - we want to make an impact and help bring knowledge and truth about our galaxy forward and advance our understanding of the milky way itself.

One particular area we'd like to pay attention to, at least for the first phase of this project, will be our galaxy's outer edges. "The rim" as many of us have come to call it, is one of the least explored areas of our home, and the rim is where we'd like to focus our efforts, particularly for that one reason alone. There is a treasure trove of information, sights to see and worlds to behold that sit waiting for mankind's curious eyes to glance on these alien surfaces for the first time, and we don't want to keep them waiting.

So, we are reaching out now to other sub-factions, other nations around the bubble, those of us who carry that thirst, that need to know 'what is out there' and have the courage and bravery to step far beyond the safer boundaries of known and explored space to the edges of our knowledge. Join us - as we reach out to all of mankind regardless of your nationality or race, regardless of your creed or color, regardless of your faith or lack thereof - this is an effort we wish to bring together for all of us in finding a common ground, for a common goal, with a common purpose.

Step forward with us commanders, and let us write our names in the history books of our species as the brave pioneers who set forth to find the hidden secrets kept on the edges of our galaxy.

Mission Outline

This circumnavigational exploration of our galaxy is intended to take a year or more - so it is a very long, slow, deliberate paced mission for ourselves. We will most likely (although this is not 100% set in stone yet) be advancing at only a few hundred to a thousand light years every other day, possibly at an even slower pace, giving exploration efforts a good chance to really fan out and explore the local sphere of space around us. We'll set up 'camps' as we'll call them along our route where we'll be stationed during our time in the area of operation, and will act as a central gathering point for the fleets themselves. In a sense, this is a bit like our mobile docking station (since we are lacking in a player controlled version of this 'til much later in the year).

A key and critical element to how we are working this mission will be our efforts towards organization. We'll be grouping ourselves in an organized structure, complete with an in-house emergency response team with repair and fuel limpets and outfitted for rescue operations, specialists for particular mission directives (astrogeologists for helping to find and catalogue worlds with particularly high concentrations of valuable minerals for surface mining for instance - or astrobiologists for when we come across organic life out in the deep) and the bulk of our forces will be of course our 'Field Explorers' i.e. those who fan out from base camps and alert the others when they've come across a particular point of interest, or a system that needs the attention of the rest of us, etc.

Another aspect of how we want to focus our organization, is around the notion that we want this to be a multi-factional, and multi-national effort bringing together multiple cultural backgrounds, languages and nationalities - as well as in-game factions and pledged powers - to cooperate in a large, coordinated effort together as one whole. This again is the essence of the 'effort of mankind' mentality that we're incorporating into this image behind the expedition itself. We'd like the joined efforts of a multitude of people with us and to actually form up explorer wings to represent the nations of man and incorporate their representation in our graphics and banners. ("Proud 'insert national identity here' Exploration Officer of Project: Outer Limits" or some variation thereof could be sort of 'awarded' to expeditionaries for instance)

It's a long, long term effort so we imagine plenty of people will sort of come and go as we travel along, some needing a break from the deep, some needing to get out to the party to join the trek - the amount of time we'll spend and the amount of energy and effort will afford players the ability to join with the expedition itself as it chugs along. One analogy I've thought of to use is it's more of a 'sponge' than a 'spear' in exploration. Many expeditions have a direct route and often a tight deadline and so forth. Our approach will be much more of a broad tool - provided we end up with the supportive numbers needed to adequately and effectively pull this strategy off.

Joining the Expedition

We first off would like to know which fleet you'd like to join! We're organized into three basic categories:

A. Exploration Fleet
The bulk of our exploration armada, the exploration fleet is a mix of ship types who serve as the foot army for the expedition force.

B. Support Fleet
Emergency response fleet to aid stranded pilots who have run out of fuel, or are in dire need of repairs.

C. Specialist Fleet
Housing our astrogeologists, astrobiologists, navigations team, cartography team, archives & records department and so forth, the specialist fleet carries out a multitude of specialized and detailed duties and roles in the armada.

If interested, please contact me or leave a comment, myself and one of the officers from the archives department will be available to help :)

I love the idea, however, last month a year long expedition called the Dead End Circumnavigation Expedition departed the bubble with more than 100 explorers. With a very similar mission and aim, they won't return for over a year. Thier expedition is very similar to yours - which is fine - but you might find a shortage of members for your trip. Here is there link.

Are there aspects of your expedition that differ from DECE that might entice other members?

Rep for the OP. This is how I prefer to play the game myself. Have a plan, set up a mission profile and objectives and then get out there and explore the hell out of the Milky Way.

I'm heading out to do my Beagle Point and Beyond mission starting next week (probably) and will be in the black for a few months.

(My travelogue examples; the link is in my sig).

Stay safe, have fun and o7!

Honestly I'm not sure, we've got around 30 so far - but this is the first time i've ever actually used a forum, normally i just work with the EDC or E:D fb groups (there's 21k+ people in there, and the admins don't mind us using it to recruit - feels like the whole community is kind of behind us in there)

I feel like the social atmosphere and community around this game is kind of separated between the forums here - some dwell mostly in steam forums - while we tend to be in the social media groups and 30+ people for something that I've only started to show much effort for in the past week or so is good enough of a reaction for us lol.

The 'lore' behind why we're doing it has a lot to do with why i think it's taken off rather well, and especially well for us not having done much to 'recruit' per say other than simply announcing it in fb honestly.

It's elite: dangerous, there's probably going to end up being lots and lots of similar expeditions, missions and so forth, kind of only so much we can really do in the game overall. ;)

Thanks man :) Started out as just something me and about a dozen or so friends wanted to do and it started to gain lots of attention so we figured we'd see if anyone from the forums wanted to fly along :D

Looks like my previous response to you didn't go through for some reason.

I don't think there's that much difference other than it's meant to be an almost semi-permanent mission overall, sort of forever tooling through the galaxy tbh until most of the systems out there have been searched (which will most likely be never).

This originally was just something that a hand full of friends and myself were doing, and I started updating the EDC fb group with our progress and it garnered attention - and we've been growing pretty rapidly for having only been out for less than a week now, we weren't even directly 'looking' for people to join us but we've gone from less than 12 to 30 in just a few days, and I've been encouraged more than once that "I should post this to the forums" so...here I am lol. This is the first I myself, and probably anyone in my little circle has ever ventured onto the official E:D forums, steam forums for the game or the reddit forums. We mostly have just dwelled in our facebook bubble (which is pretty big, the larger of the two groups has 21k+ members) so I figured I'd just see if anyone else in the 'forum worlds' would want to hop in too. :)
