Awkward question that really needs an answer

Only go out on Monday?

If you don't know the answer to a question, you can only guess.
In an information vacuum speculation runs wild.

I just want to know what's going on. It's not an unreasonable request. Each time a similar thread comes up there is a contingent of the community that is apparently compelled to point out how unreasonable it is to want to know what's going on, what the future plans (such as they are) hold for the game. The threads go through multiple iterations of derailing attempts & pride in how ignorant they are, and very, very occasionally some information is gleaned from the devs.

I just want to know what's going on. The answers don't need to be specific or detailed, big picture stuff is fine. They used to tell us this stuff, it was interesting. They don't any more.

They did.

They only did because I & a few other players contacted them after the expo. The information (pertinent to a LEP owner) was not volunteered at the show.

Which was an oversight, and they corrected that. But they also said there was more than they even had time to cover at the expo itself. The mission reward system overhaul being one such item. They still gave a whole year's worth of "This is what's coming and what we're doing." Planning or promising further out than that isn't really possible, with new programming methods and tools coming out all the time.

And yet they sold that product that is yet to be realised. I'm not looking for promises, I just want to know what's going on. The answers do not need to be specific, big picture is fine. I don't think it's unreasonable for someone who bought a product over two years ago to request some information about how the plans for the game (beyond Horizons) is progressing.

Since Horizons launched in 2015, we have (to my knowledge) only a single forum post from Zac that provides any information whatsoever regarding any content beyond Horizons. I would like to know more.

Arguably no-one is buying Beyond - it has been stated that it is free to owners of Horizons - that does not mean that it is part of Horizons, in my opinion. It will include changes for both the base game and Horizons.

What new programming methods? I'm a programmer and not aware of new "methods." New tools for game developers using C++? I'm not a C++ programmer any longer, but I do watch for trends and new programming tools in general, but I'm not familiar with any new tools for C++. Genuinely interested if I've missed them (it's possible) but since it's OT, you can PM me the info. Thanks

They don't owe you anything and could stop developing the game tomorrow and there is nothing you could do about it.
Would I like to know more? Yes. Will asking for it change anything? No. They will announce something when they are ready to announce something. This involves expos, gaming magazines, shareholders etc. but not Riverside and Babel making noise on the forums...

I had hoped I would not need to repeat that part so soon after posting it.

I'm an LEP owner too (actually it's part of my DDF KS pledge) - I don't expect to be treated as a special case by Frontier when they are planning new content though (whether or not it's paid or free to owners of existing content).

.... also, when anyone bought an LEP (at either offering) or backed at or above the Digital Download pledge tier, no-one had any information relating to the exact scope or schedule of the expansions that would be free as part of the purchase / pledge.

I appreciate the camaraderie but knowing that there has been a lack of information for a long time doesn't help :)

We used to have sneak peaks in the newsletters, we used to have regular Dev updates, I would like to see the return of these types of communication.

Actions speak louder than words of course, and we are seeing some progress that is exceeding expectations on the stuff that is close to release, this is good. However there is no new information (pertinent to a LEP owner) other than Zacs post. I would like to know more.

True. They currently have many livestreams though and the feedback section is there for the first time since the DDF...

Baby steps, yes. I am frustrated by the excessive demands from some more outlying sections of the community to attempt to hold FDev to 'promises'. In several cases they have a good point (DDF stuff for example) and I see these demands for attention as at least part of the reason why FDev have just clammed up. If you don't say anything no one can hold them to anything. If you never give an actual deadline (only imply one) no one can complain that stuff is late.

I make no such demands, I just want to know what is happening, what plans have changed, what cool potential feature is being worked on. I am interested.

All of this would undoubtedly create wild & creative debate among the community on what's more important, how some new gizmo would ruin immersion, all that stuff. But it would generate interest & maybe enthusiasm for what is now seen as a fairly old game that's languishing in the bargain bins at Steam even though it's still actively being developed, with a still evolving story.

I absolutely understand that, but as said above, they will announce the next major expansion when they are ready to do that. I guess you will have to wait until E3 or gamescon or their next expo.

Completely agree with the majority of this. (Other than the "bargain bins at Steam" thing... although I can see where some might think that's the case.)

That said, there's games that have been released over 2-3 years ago still going for the same asking price- but that's not set by Valve, it's set by the publishers. Some prices are a bit extreme considering their actual "value" for the asking price, (to the point of absurd) you know the ones I'm taking about... they always show up on the top of the "best selling" list at their original asking price 3 years later, which make you LOL every time you see them. ;)

I tend to think "Beyond" is more of a rework of release & season2 rather than an actual DLC season. The actual 'season' to me seems to be the paid for mystery premium content they mentioned which may drop this year or the next. Which of course is hoped by some to be something along the lines of atmospherics and basic spacelegs in ships & stations. As for community updates, well aren't there still livestreams by Ed and others periodically?

As for not announcing a detailed & deadlined roadmap and overpromising like cig-arrets. I prefer it this way. When Frontier is ready with soon to release updates they'll announce it like they recently did with the beta date. I think it helps not to overpressure their devs or get overexpecting into misleading hype and marketing like they do over at cig-arrets and constantly have to backtrack and rewrite their roadmap deadlines for years. (ex: like Squadron 42's trailer showing big bold letters, release date in 2016!)

Ed calls it Season 3 in the recent news thread:

Greetings commanders,

At Frontier Expo 2017, we revealed the first details of season 3 of Elite Dangerous, called Elite Dangerous: Beyond – you can watch back the announcements here. Throughout 2018 we’re bringing four Beyond updates to Elite Dangerous Commanders which focus on adding new content, uncovering and progressing the mysteries of the galaxy and enhancing existing core gameplay experiences. These updates will consist of a number of additions with the first update detailed below, followed by two smaller content updates through the year and our largest update coming in Q4. Each update will be a new Chapter in the Elite Dangerous: Beyond season.
