Visuals will be a big part of the game. It would be interesting to see what kind of display people will be using. Please indicate your display in the poll.

Anybody using an IPS?
Anybody with 120 Hz refresh rate?
Anybody using a projector, for an awe inspiring, cinematographic experience on their wall?

Perhaps you will upgrade your hardware for this game. Maybe you will get a new graphics card as well as display.

I wonder if E : D has been optimized for a particular resolution. What is it?

EDIT:

If you have a multi-monitor setup, like eyefinity, please select the last option: 4K. This would be like 4 1080p monitors. Maybe you have only (!) 3 monitors, but some people have a 4 monitor rig. Sorry about not including your setup in the poll. I have tried to edit the poll, but can't seem to do so.

btw, how do you write E : D without it becoming a smiley?

By the time ED comes out, I should be at 3x 120Hz 3D via Nvidia. But for now 5040x1050.

Also have a 1280x1024 short throw projector, but it can't do 3D - that's also in line for an update in the next year.

Oh, and Rift!

For me visuals in games are totally unimportant. I'll be playing with all settings set to the lowest possible to get up as much speed as possible. The machine I'll be playing on will be the laptop I'll be buying next month. And that will have a dual core i7@2Ghz and a Intel HD 4000 graphics system peaking at 1150MHz... so I probably will have to use the lowest settings to be able to play anyway.

The screen on it is an 11.6" IPS display with 1920x1080 pixels... so that will be the maximum resolution I'll be able to play in.

Where the poll :)?
Good question. :)

I think that spec will give you a better graphics quality than you think, in one of the frontier videos David states that as far system requirements go he wants as people as possible to enjoy ED

getting FE2 to work on a 7.14 mhz processor is pretty amazing technical achievement and at a guess David and team will not waste the power we have at our fingertips, having a bespoke engine rather than an off the peg version will allow for more bang for your buck

i have a 24" Samsung monitor with 2ms response time running at 1920x1080 res, i also have a 40" 1080p LED TV hooked up with clone display and that rocks!

i wouldnt invest in a triple screen display as the bezel would annoy me

Well Ive got options.

Ive got the projector in the living room which does 720 "hd" natively in 3d at 120hz.

Ive got the gaming computers with 1920x1080 at 120hz / 3d.

To be honest I dont really do much gaming at all on the projector. Its cool to see on there but its mainly used for movies. I dont think the big picture does much for a gaming experience apart from in racing games... I find sat 8' from a 100" screen that looking around for status indicators etc is a real pain in the neck.. I find for immersion a pair of big headphones that block out external noise more important than screen size.

I always like old school hires CRT's 2048x1536 at decent refresh rates on a 19" screen, especially with the less squared pixels of crt technology. FAR better than 1920x1080 LCD's :(

If I play with my current machine, 1920x1200 on 24" LED.

But I plan to get a new box before then (not just for Elite... honest...), and new monitors. Of course 4K monitors will be cheap as chips by then right? RIGHT?!?!?...

So 3x 4096 x 2160 (12288x2160) 30" monitors then? (who am I kidding...)

Or go the whole hog and build myself a cockpit of a Cobra MkIII, with panels for viewports? (Hi Frontier, can we have some more cockpit concept art please?)

Yeah probably 1920x1200 on 24" ;)

if i won the lottery i would 100% get a Cobra mkIII built in my mansion with screens all the way round... with a bed in it and everything

dribble dribble

Oculus Rift! :D

Well, you know, if it's supported and doesn't make me vomit everywhere... will find out the latter in a couple of months! ;)

Yeah probably 1920x1200 on 24" ;)

I havent seen any Elite Dangerous cockpit concept art but although it may be out of date years ago in one of the manuals there was in fact a drawn picture of the cockpit and pilots chair of a cobra mkIII I remember referencing it and grabbing some ideas from it for my own ship interior...

Right I can confirm its in the Acorn version of the manual at the very least... Im not sure how frontier would feel about me posting a link to a scan of an old manual but its out there and about.

No option for 1366x768, a common resolution for the cheaper laptops like mine. It has Nvidia graphics and a corei7, 8GB RAM so I hope to be able to run ED on it.

Hi, deMangler!

Thank you for looking at this poll. I am sorry I didn't specifically include your laptop resolution. Polls are limited to a maximum of 20 options, and I couldn't include everything.

You and others with this resolution should select HD (720p), if you would like to participate. (If I edit the poll now, all the existing results would be lost.)

HD High Definition (720p) This display aspect ratio is among the most common in recent notebook computers and desktop monitors. 1360×768 (1044k)
1366×768 (1049k)
16:9 to within 0.05% accuracy
(683:384 exact)
24 bpp

as mentioned before.. I think (and DB has alluded to) ED will work pretty well on current systems as their custom engine will be dedicated to rather than adapted for Elite.... i can imagine that as system spec goes up (after initial release) and content is added the requirements will go up

OK - cool, I'll do that.!

No idea yet, since I'm gonna upgrade everything in 2014. Hoping to use Oculus though. :)

I am gonna see what the alpha and beta runs like before i make any decisions on upgrades, i have a pretty ok spec... i can run WoW MoP on ultra with fps running between 40-60 even in the laggy areas (and WoW is known for its high requirements vs. low quality)

if the alpha/beta runs medium to high then i should be okay, maybe just upgrading the gfx card (£150-£200) at the time of release, if the alpha/beta runs badly then i will know that i will need to save up for a new pc in 2014 probably spending £1000-£1500 on a new desktop (monitor and accessories will be fine)

.. but from what i gather, there shouldn't be much reason to upgrade

No surround options on the poll?

just need one option...

- Surround, 3x1 monitors or better - Eyefinity/Nvidia, 3840x1050 or higher

Upgraded to a Asus PB278Q 2560x1440 PLS pnel monitor and a Gigabyte 7970 WF3 Ghz card 6 months ago so hopefully be on maximum or near maximum detail levels when Elite launches.
