Dove Enigma UA bombed, preventing completion of its voyage in time for the man it was named for.

.....I'd heard about DoveEnigma. I thought it was pretty cool, but I was doing other things in game and despite my early enthusiasm for exploration I soon found it dull. I gave a private o7 to more altruistic CMDRs and carried on doing my own thing. Now I'm at Jameson Memorial tweaking my 'Conda for what will be the longest trip I've ever taken in ED.

....

I might not make it to Colonia. The UA bombing might not be reversed. That's not important. What I felt and what I did is.

o7 CMDRs

I'm sitting on a small pad right now on the Dove Enigma (PS4). It's yours as soon as you arrive. Stormy and Acid are also here. May the "hammer of the gods drive your ships to new land, to fight the hordes and sing, and cry. Colonia, they are coming."

I agree that this was a screwup.

But in Frontier's defense, I got the impression from Zack's recent comments that they didn't see this coming. I don't think any decent, caring person would. But just like in real life, there are plenty of scum bags in the world who do things the rest of us would never even consider. Even in a video game.
Agree.

It was a mistake (oversight). Mistakes happen. They need to be more careful next time, but i won't agree with harsh critic toward them.

edit. And hopefully FDEV finds way to support some in-game way (if they cant overturn UA-bombing).

Guys, we need a talk.

Relationship with your avatar, ship - I sympathise . I understand. I feel that.

But in the moment you put too much into 'this is my ship, my faction' basket, this happens. There's good reason why FD wanted to steer clear for players OWNING something.

Elite universe is dark. Dark corners, with dark sudden turns. Kinda same thing can be said about having a cancer.

Own it. Earn it. Respect devs. Stop blaming someone. Make respects with life. Enjoy your life together. That's a REAL journey. Not OWNING things. Not GETTING somewhere geographically.

Life happens. Best plans are halted full stop. It is so similar to what happens when you get to know....when you get to know....that hurts.

That's how life goes.

Now, help ship to get back on track.

To be honest, you haven't helped them there. Either the blame is for adding it in the first place, or for not anticipating what would happen sooner or later, even given the distance. Games are a case of 1s and 0s, it would have been so easy to just prevent it, completely.

They did their best. They didn't have to do anything at all. I'm sure every outraged white knight on this thread is far from perfect at doing their own job. The lynch mob shifting FD is in incredibly bad taste. IMO much worse than anything the UA bombers did. Did any of you fully read Zac's post I wonder. I see both the leading ladies have quieted down, so that's something at least.

Dove lost me when he told someone to kill themselves.

That is a figure of speech and it doesn't mean what you think it means!

But whatever... You're the one with the arrogance to judge the actions of a terminal cancer patient. Not me.

If anyone's asking... You can shove your sanctimoneous opinions on Dove E's motivations where the sun don't shine!

Hopefully, you won't have your last days polluted by this kind idiocy posted in public forums.

There's a very rapid, very easy change that would immediately solve this problem:

Disable the black market that has very little reason to be there.

Look, I'll even write what should be sent out:

Greetings CMDRs!

After an investigation we found that the research station was inadvertently created with a black market. As this serves no legitimate gameplay purpose and allowed for bad actors to impact a charity event, the black market at this station has been taken offline effective immediately.

We apologize for the delay in fixing this problem.

Use those exact words if you want - treat 'em as public domain. I don't care.

While I'll never damn someone for making an honest mistake, willfully continuing to make a mistake after you've been informed of it is something else entirely.

We might agree for once.

Hey,

I just wanted to step in and leave a quick post.

I understand that players are upset by the actions that have been taken. It's important to know that we are also upset and do not condone the actions of people trying to tarnish a fantastic and worthwhile community event. However, I would also say that calling out members of the community team as not being bothered is also very unfair.

Paige was the person that took the concept and worked with development to try and support a fantastic community initiative. She is equally as invested in the success of this voyage as the hundreds of Commanders taking part.

I understand that emotions can run high when actions are taken in such a way. But please do understand that this and the many other memorials that exist throughout the galaxy are a way of Frontier and the team celebrating and supporting the community to give them a permanent in game reminder of their loved ones. We are very pleased to be able to add these memorials in game as we feel this small service is of great value and comfort to those who have lost friends or family.

I think that by trying to shine a light on this issue, you are misunderstanding the level of thought and consideration that goes into making memorials like this possible and the care that the whole team have for our community.

On this specific issue, as many people have mentioned, if the shut down has happened because a player has used legitimate game mechanic then we would be looking (and supporting) Commanders using in-game mechanics to reverse this.

We are currently investigating to ensure that this was indeed done through legitimate in game means and not an exploit as well as other comments made from the Community. We will let you know once we have finished investigating the issue. In the meantime, could I ask that we remain considered in our responses and please refrain from directly targeting any member of staff for a game related decision.

Many thanks,

Zac

Tying (and toying with) the personal fates of people, and especially tragic fates as is the case here, to an event in a computer game was never a good idea to begin with.
And i am in no doubt that your motivations and intentions were noble ones.
For this to work you had to make 100% sure that this would proceed dignified and without interruptions.
You didn't.
The event is tainted now, even if it comes to a successful conclusion.
What you have now is a terminally ill man, who just had that little bit more hurt piled onto him, and an angry community, which would like nothing better than to find out who caused this.
And we all better hope that they restrict their search to in-game.
Shouldn't have touched this, FD.

Can you share your build with me? Want to help so I'll need to quickly retrofit my own cutter.

Cheers

I’ve made some changes. I’m down to 576 tons but added an SRV bay to explore on the return trip. I don’t have the engineering values set right because I can’t remember them off the top of my head.

Probably not the best build, but I figure I’ll want to go have some fun on the way home so I left my A-rated thrusters on there.

I UA bombed Jacques, and look what happened...

(that is, the community rallied, repaired it, and it's now formed the foundation of a new human colony)

It always makes me laugh we were both doing it at the same time and completely unaware of each other, UA battle brother :D

Unfortunately... Its too late for Dove E. The damage to his vision of what this was going to be has already been done. He said it himself.

Hopefully the response from the community to right this wrong will ultimately give him something better than he had expected. Only time will tell on that.

You know what? You're not worth me getting a ban over. You're really not.

I'm going to leave with this. DE needs to think before he types. There are some things you never say, and being a cancer patient does not change that.

Anyway, I could just go killing players hauling MA if I really wanted. Now that might be disrespectful.

But I'm not. I'm just going to carry on grinding imperial rank.

But make no mistake. I will speak my mind on suicide... And figure of speech? Please, that's a strawman if I ever saw one.

Event is never tainted, if people come out of it understanding something about life.

I have seen death too many times in my life. Life ends. Celebrate that. Megaship? Megaship will go on. Help it to go on.

Yes, some poor attention seeking try to destroy good feel around event. But it happens only if people allow it to happen.

The issue is, this isn't a story. This is real life, with a guy at the end of his life looking to have some fun while he can. And others seeking to ruin that.

Well said, and SO TRUE!

The disconnect I keep seeing based on some of the off handed comments in this thread is truly mind boggling. Are these people as callous and self absorbed as their remarks seem to indicate? Or are they just not skilled in dealing with subjects of such a deep emotional nature?

Either way, this thread has been a real eye opener. Funny how you can find more true insights into human nature on a video game forum than anywhere else on the planet.

Meself and me daughter lost someone very close to us when she was barely old enough to have a clear memory of what she looked like to cancer. As though mother nature and her sense of humour thought itd be funny to make it a genetic cancer that affects women only...my daughter is so far only missing about 14% of her right lung so far. Shes 15.

She got my autism and her mums cancer...cool thing to grow up knowing ye probably wont reach old age.

However...onwards and upwards. Reading through this thread has been a good reminder to me why I stopped using this forum, but Ill bite my tongue on what I could say to some only to say ye understand nothing until ye live with it and watch it take everything and everyone ye care about. The watching part is the worst...ye know its bad when ye aint prayed since ye were 6 but ye pray to God to just take them in the end...in the end, death is a mercy.

I dunno who did this thing...but its a sign of a very toxic element of players...a few of whom Im starting to see here and there on these forums recently. This place got boring, no sense of humour just salt salt moan moan...bored wandered off so forgive me if I admit to not knowing anything about this entire venture until now.

Tis a shame on this community to know players like that are still here...such an act, using legitimate game tactics or not, still constitutes the most toxic form of griefing there is. Imho, that should be an instant lifetime ban in any game ^

Do you think it should be an instant lifetime ban (even if it is for like 2 weeks) to tell people they should kill themself or is it ok because it has been asked politely using a figure of speech ?

I was not aware of this event until now so take from that what you will.

Either way, what I will say to the CMDR who is suffering from this horrible disease, I wish you well and I hope you recover soon.
