Hang on a second... hasn't it already been announced in several places that characters from other copyrighted fictional works are an immediate no-no?

The generic surname-only "Shepard" is fair game I suppose, but Han Solo? Ace Rimmer? Anything with Skywalker?! Unless you can show a birth certificate or Deed Poll with those names on, your application should be rejected straight away.

I was under this impression too.

Anyone else thinking that the game accounts featuring these "sought after" commander names from popular fiction may end up auctioned off to the highest bidder soon after implementation?

My name will remain a secret till it gets the thumbs up :) - it is a film character but a more obscure one. One I also consider to be the only bad guy in any film that has NO redeeming qualities. Thoroughly hateful person through and through. I hope to make him a good man though :p

Hm....must be Sauron. :p

I Demand to see the top 100 most requested Commander names. and if you are realy up for it the top 200.
I really need a laugh.:D

I was hoping to share this with people next week, but given the reaction to this small sample I'm not sure it is wise..

This is true for things like space stations and galaxies, etc. Which are permenant in-game assets. But policing something like fictional references for player's individual names is frankly impossible and is accepted as common-place in basically any game, so it is unlikely that we'll be enforcing a ban on these.

No Leeroy Jenkins?

Should of thought of that, lol

@Ashley
Didn't David say that there could be multi commanders with the same because the ID is down to the account rather commander's name... so although we a reserving a commander now, we could start another alt commander with the same name?

sorry if i'am wrong here the videos were rewatched over and over during late night chats on KS biting finger nails

I don't think this is an element that has been set in stone yet, so I can't confirm that for you I'm afraid.

Hope I get Grey :-/ It's my actual name, so I really want it! :p If it's based on when we pledged then I think I should be fine.

Should I be worried that I haven't had an email notification for access to the rewards management app (as mentioned in update 37)?

The comment about colours is a bit worrying - I was hoping to use my real surname, and I might not get the chance!

I also demand to see the top 100. I think most popular sci-fi names will have been attempted but not necessarily get into the top 10.

I do agree with the concept of not allowing letter to number replacement (or any form of leetspeek because it is truly annoying and I do cringe when I see anyone log onto a game I'm playing with that kind of name. Especially with xX at the start and Xx at the end.

The trouble is that it's not the username that's the problem, it's the person behind it. I'm sure that someone with the name H4n S010 might be a sound bloke and take the game very seriously and be a very good and consistent player in game, but just couldn't get his favourite captain's name because it's hard to be first out of 25,000 people. However, someone with the username "Meredith Argent" could be an at leet gamer d00d with as much common sense as a tribble's reproductive glands.

If the intent is to preserve the "suspension of disbelief" then I laud the concept. If, however, the expectation is to improve the player intelligence level then I think that's a losing battle, and that's more of an issue for how you set up your player group experience.

There seems to have been some sort of glitch - quite a few folks report not getting the email. Including me, FWIW. Anyway, go here:

https://elite.frontier.co.uk/backers

and go through the 'lost password' process. That is what I did, and it worked fine.

Thanks for your reply Ashley...

Do you mean multiple commanders with the same name or alt commanders per account, or indeed both?

Both.

The comment about colours is a bit worrying - I was hoping to use my real surname, and I might not get the chance!

You might be ok with this one.

This should indeed work, if it doesn't though feel free to email me with your pledge details and I'll fix it for you.

If the worst is that you dont get John Orange as your name you could always space it up with Commander Johnny Tango.

Some of you are being unduly harsh to your fellow community members over this. It isn't surprising that a lot of people would want to take the names of their favourite scifi characters, I know if I had the opportunity I'd be interested in exploring the galaxy as Malcolm Reynolds! So please try to be more considerate before deriding people's choices.

I would be more interested to know if they intend to try and follow the character's character or just use the name.

i.e. would the in game Han Solo be a scruffy nerf herder or would Cap'n Mal Reynolds always return the medicine after the heist?

I'm guessing if I'd gone with my surname, "Jones", I'd have a whelks chance in a supernova of getting it.

As it happens I went with something pretty obscure, although given the age ranges of some backers, may be not so obscure (considering, and very surprisingly for me, it *wasnt* available as a forum name, /shakes fist at whoever took that).

I have a question, I'm logging in with "hanni79" but my name says "Hanni79". I'm not sure if I wrote it with a capital "H" or not. Any advice ?
