Distant Worlds II Event What Ship are you Bringing and Why?

I am currently on the fence between 3 different ships for Distant Worlds 2 - each of which are very different and have unique benefits. Which particular ships I am debating is not relevant [or else it will likely turn into personal preference debates]. I am more interested, however, in which ship YOU have decided (or still undecided) to use as your DW2 ship - and in particular why? Perhaps the *why* might help me make my decision.

Anaconda on my primary because it's my staple, good jump range, great internals. Gives me a ship launched fighter to crash, several SRVs to crash, limpets for fleet repairs and fuel rat operations and spare for other bits :)

Imp Courier on my secondary because it's possibly my favourite ship and this will be my rough build:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/411914-Gotta-go-FAST
Gets about 400m/s speed + boost and 47ly range. My fun ship to take along :D I expect with a few modules here and there that will drop a bit but hopefully not too much.

I was tempted for my main account to take the T10 or Beluga... or the Corvette actually. Biggest problem is personal to me in my current IRL situation since my gaming time is somewhat sporadic so I need jump range on at least 1 of my two accounts, ideally both.

You don't have to, but I'm interested.

Okay then. My Cobra Mk III, the Kalashnikov, or AK for short, is the ship that got me to elite in exploration. She's the brig that got me my first ten million. (this save)

And now I'm learning to fight with her. This ship will get me through everything.

Anaconda right now. I am just used to it after almost 1Mly jumping around and dat jumprange . I am pondering a Cobra MKIV too. It has just the right amount of slots and this model needs some love. The only thing I know for sure is it will be a shieldless build.

I think ~40Ly range is my break-even point for 5-10 hours ED-time weekly so this are my options:

  • Conda ~70Ly
Most obvious choice with all that optionals, but had some kylies with it already and I dont like it very much...

  • Orca ~55Ly
Most stylish choice(imo), nice range, ok optionals, but used it for some expeditions, too...

  • T-7 ~48Ly
After the patch I was fascinated, its a nice ship now. Made a little 8k trip to test it and unfortunately I was bored from it.
Its doing the job well, but it didnt got me.
And I really hate the Lakoon workbench style cockpits, so the other Type-x's and ASPx (which I already took for DWE) are out, too.

  • Python ~48Ly
This is my multipurpose bubble cruiser, although I really like to fly it -its the ship I were sitting in most of my playtime- I think I dont want to take it on an exploration

  • Cutter ~42Ly
This was my first impulse after the DW2 announcement as I just unlocked it some days before.
Range isnt that bad in this build, but of course its ripped to the bones and feels "crippled" now, knowing how much fun it is to ride it A-rated...
(switching back to 8A Thrusters would leave it with ~38 Ly I think)

  • Clipper ~44Ly(?) / Courier ~46Ly(?)
Pretty much the same as with the Cutter, rice-paper them to make them good jumpers and they feel "crippled"
(of course thats the deal with every exploration specced build, but its most noticeable in the Imperial Vessels imho)

So I am quite indecisive at the moment.
Which is ok, still have around a 3/4 year to find a solution :D (and maybe FD helps with adding another option to the game ;))

Hi guys, I am going to make this the official ship discussion thread for distant worlds and advise the mods to delete all other threads with a pointer to this one that arise about the topic.

Sounds good! I have edited the original post to better reflect this... And as I get closer to making my decision, I will share the three builds to discuss.

I had signed up to take my AspX, but right now I'm not so sure. I have used the AspX for all my explorations up until this point and need a new ship to use. I will have to outfit a bunch and see how I like them. I will also read through this thread and see what people say about the different ships. I know I will NOT be taking an Anaconda. I hate the view from the cockpit. I love the range it has, but the view kills it for me. I really want a ship that has that range but the view of the Asp series or the T series.

Good question. My ship so far is:
Anaconda: "Terra Nova" 69ly range
If we get our hands on the Guardian FSD booster then maybe I'll reconsider but the range on my Annie is unavoidable tbh

Coriolis really needs to get updated, I want to see how far my (theoretical) build will go with the new experimentals...

Uncertain if I'm joining, but if I do it will be the AspX.

Wonderfully quick to dip'n'jump, wonderful cockpit for sightseeing - esp in VR where you can walk over to those windows. Just wish it had the floor window like the Vulture, that would have been the icing on the cake. And it has a big enough tank to be lazy in plotting, and it's internal so you don't feel bad for having it.

I had a jumpconda, but I didn't like it it for exploration. Jumprange was cool, but I felt like I was staring at too much cockpit.

@ Rudi Raumkraut: Given the overpowered shields on the Courier, I'm not sure if it's even possible to rice-paper that ship. I mean, even a stock 2D shield generator will give you 250 MJ.
You can get pretty good jump range out of it, too, and with very good speed as well - consider taking the 2A Enhanced Thrusters instead of the 3A. Don't really have my build handy right now, but here is the Clipper that I'm using. Good range, good speed, not entirely cardboard either.
The Cutter can have plenty of shields and armour and still maintain a ~40 ly jump range, but you do have to tone down the thrusters then. Can't have it all, I'm afraid.

That said... With the new ships and probably new tech coming by the end of the year, everything here might be obsoleted by the time DW2 rolls around. If you're aiming for 40 ly, it could very well be that most anything will hit it by then.

@ Qohen Leth: say, I'm curious: have you flown Anacondas, and if so, how long?

About the Asp Scout: it's an interesting alternative to the Explorer. The latter can outdo it in both jump range and forward speed at the same time, but the Scout has not only much better handling in normal flight, but also somewhat better supercruise handling. Both ships are good at that, mind. With the same downward visibility and better handling, it might be more fun to fly planetside than the Asp. Giving up something to gain something.
If it didn't have the same cockpit and looks of the Asp Explorer, I'd consider taking it out too.

My Anaconda. I set the current galactic depth record (and all-time furthest distance from the galactic plane) flying her, so it’s the only exploration ship for me! I’ll dig out my build; I’m taking lots of helpful things (fuel and repair limpets), plus a fighter hangar for some fun :).

You see I don't get what the big deal is about squeezing as much jump range as possible. I much rather have more fuel than I need so I can jump honk and charge FSD as soon as it's cooled down. You don't have to worry about refuelling EVERY time. I tried it in my Courier and mine only has a 4t tank of fuel. It's stressful to have to fuel scoop every time. My Clipper has a extra 64t tank and I can go 500ly without refuelling, omg it's so nice to be able just jump and not scoop every time and charge the FSD as soon as possible then look at the system map. I tested my theory on a 1,171ly trip and I did it in 26 minutes. Not bad for a 34ly jump range ship.

Different style of travelling I guess ;)
I jump every 50 sec, tank always full, so more jump range == more kylies / hour :)

@marx: true, the Courier is doing great with its shields, mine doing well in NPC combat with a 3D reinforced to stay around 80t optimal mass of the 3Aenh Thrusters :)
Never tried the 2Aenh, good tip, just the standard 2D with lowest mass, which wasnt very satisfying... 740 boost in combat with PAs is what made combat actually fun for me :)
