Getting use out of those X52 extras (pic hvy)

Thank you OP. +Rep I'm having a real hard time making the transition from KB+Joy to HOTAs. And was having a tough time deciphering reddit instructions. Cheers for the piccies.

Genius!

This thread stopped me tearing my hair out after a Windows 10 update decided it hated one of my USB devices but left me to guess which one. Ended up insstalling the profile editor for my X52 (which I have never used before) and spent half a frustrating day wondering why the pinkie switch had stopped working. All fixed, and now my X52 even knows my name. YAY!

I think I'm missing something
I followed the instructions and deleted everything, unprogrammed the pinkie button but ED doesn't pick it up. Also tried it as latched, plus bound to right shift as an attempted work around. Trouble is that I actually need it for a lot of functions.

Any ideas how to make this work?

Also if anyone knows how to display some simple text on the 3 lines of the mfd, it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers

Which is the binding (in ProfileEditor or is it in Elite setup) to make the E-Button en/dis Able the Eyetracking or headset?

I use the Tobii EyeTracker. Better said I want to use but since I have it I havent flown anymore since I have difficulties to set it up :(

I downloaded your files off the signature/dropbox and tried them out in the training videos.

If I understand correctly "Blue mode" is landing mode but I couldn't get "Wheel button" to deploy the landing gears (I did try all the modes).
I don't know if you're still playing this game but it would be great if you could fill in like 3 of These on what key does what at what mode.

I figured out something awesome today, and was so excited I had to make a slideshow step by step to show other owners of Saitek X52 (non-pro, but I guess pro will work the same way) how to get all those "other" buttons and sliders to work in Elite. You know... like the pinky trigger, or the precision slider, or how to make the throttle hat an 8way switch (it is already) for combined thrusting.

So, without further ado, the screenshots:

Here is where you'll find the Saitek control panel. I'll assume this is hiding in your toolbar if you are already flying with the FCS.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek2.png
Click the Profile editor

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek3.png
Make sure you got the right FCS for what you've got (the X52 pro drivers will NOT work with plain X52), and select Programming

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek4.png
Click all your buttons and move all your sliders to ensure all are working here, then change the view up top to grid... and brace yourself...

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek5.png
annnd welcome to spreadsheet hell! Don't be alarmed, we are going to get rid of most of that right now. See the columns going off to the right? see the X at the top of each column? delete all of those except for the farthest left one.

THIS is why the pinky trigger and mode selector don't work in game, the default for these is "shift states", using complicated "pinky+button 5 does something different" We don't want any of that confusing nonsense.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek6.png
When your done, it should look like this: just 1 mode. no shift-states.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek7.png
Take a moment now to name that 1 and only mode. This will be line 1 of your MFD screen. you can have it display whatever you want. Just don't be gross. :)

So now we have to find all those shift functions and unprogram them to clear them up for the elite game to use. Don't worry, it sounds complicated, but its just as simple as...

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek8.png
click the button you want to unprogram.. like the pinky trigger. It will jump you right to it, and highlight it.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek9.png
Don't click on the square, or any of that, just click that little menu arrow.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek10.png
And there it is! unprogram! Just check it. That trigger is now available and recognizable to your game. Note that you can select latching here if you so choose (so like click-on, click-off). but since I planned on using if for my weapon 2 trigger, its just a plain unprogrammed button.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek11.png
Next turn the mode on the right side of your flightstick to find those mode buttons. Unprogram those the same way

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek12.png
Now for the amazing change, that made me smile immensely in flight :D
Jiggle the throttle hat a bit, to find its field, and click its menu button

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek13.png
ooohhh! shiny 8 way switch functionality! Ive read in these forums that people complained the throttle hat doesn't always register a click, and can only do one direction at once. well, that was because the corner spots.. the other 4 ways.. were dead and weren't being used! And now they ARE! Nothing more to do on this one to make your directional thrust all multitasking... you can jiggle in smooth circles now- if that's your thing... :D

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek14.png
Next is precision slide. I was hoping to use this for radar range settings... but its not like a mousewheel.so will only move the rarar range 1 tick or so.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek15.png
But if you unprogram it, the game will now recognize it as "U-axis + and -". I use mine to cycle through target subsystems.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek16.png
Unprogram the 2 rotary knobs on the throttle and you can use them for.. well. as 2 other axis controls!

With all those unprogrammings done, and any other personal changes to buttons you wanted to do (like make some of them latching), its time to name your config, which will display as line 2 on your MFD when its loaded. So for me, my config says "Welcome Cmdr Calaban" across the 2 lines.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Calaban/saitek18.png
Last thing to do after you save it is to select it back in the Saitek control panel menu. There it is, up top. See the flag icon next to my other profile- Calaban? that's selected as my startup config, so I wont have to bother selecting it each time I reboot.

Whew. And that's about it!

Hope this step by step will enable even the most lost, somewhat middle aged (modern) computer illiterate Elite gamers out there.

So much rep due, so little I can give. Thank you! o7

Well you can give to us, the rest of the community in here, replies with less full page quotes.

Someone got out on the wrong side of the Cryo-Pod this morning.
On my screen, the images are all just links, and the quoted post is inside a scrollable window. I assumed it would be the same for everyone.
Sorry for the aggravating eyestrain and scrolling finger RSI.

Same for me

Sorry gents, i didn't mean it like that! :(
I should have added tongue in cheek :p. It was meant like that.

All the best to you and have a great evening!

I copy it on this thread, so everything is on the same place :)

For people not using mode for elite dangerous, here is a way to bind this rotary to fire group :
- bind a key for next group, an other one for previous group
- use the x52 profile editor
- make sure you have 3 groups, using the grid mode
- make 2 macro for shift command :
* shift command for mode 1 - using advanced command : on press, press and release the previous group key. On release, press and releate the next group key. Set both duration ("quantize time") to 0.
* shift command for mode 3 - using advanced command : on press, press and release the next group key. On release, press and releate the previous group key. Set both duration ("quantize time") to 0.

Here you are, save, apply, and enjoy.

An other trick :
if you want to use the 2 throttle rotary for power distributor :
- set rotary to directional axis, set sensibility to 2 (very small : only 2 ticks from the left), and bind one axis to weapon, the other one to sys.
- same for the second rotary, 1 to engine, the other one to sys.

Brilliant

I totally appreciate being able to use both the pinky button and even the modes can now be assigned to some buttons so you can set buttons to different uses in the modes all within the Elite dangerous software bindings. You can do this by clicking the mode button at the same time as setting another key.

though for some reason the two buttons on the throttle that are mouse substitutes don't work in mode two and three. but it is so useful to have all these options within the elite dangerous setup I am still looking into why these don't work in the modes.

I am super grateful for this useful solution.

Setting up my X52pro was quite a pain, but once I figured it all out it was absolutely awesome. I actually kept the pinky trigger with a shift functionality and asigned keyboard presses to almost every button on my hotas. Like boost is not on a single button but only activates when pressing the pinky trigger and then another button. Or the clutch button is my flight assist toggle, but together with pinky it fires a heatsink.

Also a bit hard to find when first trying the hotas is how to make the clutch button usable as a normal button. That's only possible in the hotas preferences where you also change around the LEDs and deadzones and not accessible via remapping tool. It's here:

Search for "control panel" in the windows start menu, go to "devices and printers" (under Hardware and Sound), rightclick the hotas and select "game controller settings, then properties. Very well hidden in the lower right of the MFD tab you can untick clutch mode.

Shame we can't see the pictures anymore. It's a bit useless without them.

If you are talking about the pictures in the OP... I can see them..

If you are using Chrome, then look up the extension Photobucket Hotlink Fix. Not sure if there is such a thing for Firefox, Edge, Explorer or Safari..

Alright,
I have just gotten a Saitek X52 Flight Controll System and I'm having some problems.
But first I just want to say I am very new to flight sticks and stuff, this is my first one.

So, after trying my new x52 in Elite Dangerous I was really happy but I needed to bind more buttons which I didn't have.
So I looked into the programmer and was extremely confused after awhile I figured everything out and started programming
which buttons to do what and what they would do in a different mode. After I was done I started the game and opened solo play to
test my new controls. I tested firing my weapons, primary fire with the trigger worked, secondary fire with the C fire button which was bound to mouse 2 not so much.
So switched modes to my travel mode where I had bound the C fire button to the keyboard button L which I had bound to landing gear the
in the game, it wouldn't deploy either. So tried following this guide to see if my issue would be solved but to no avail. :(

I have no idea what the problem is so some help would really be appreciated :)

Thanks and have a nice day!
