People say there is no scale in ED...

Hello Commanders.
People often say that there is no visible scale in Elite Dangerous...
Well I disagree. Below you can see my Eagle scooping a star...
Couldn't move the camera farther away...
You see the scale now?

Wow! While moving at several times the speed of light it's easy to forget how incredibly huge are the distances and sizes.

One thing that bothers me is that as you approach a planet, the scale doesn't seem right. I think it has to do with how the level of detail scales as you approach.

This is what a planet looks like...

It's a tough problem so I'm not complaining.

For me the scale feeling wrong comes from the view while sitting in the seat of my ship.
I use headtracking when I look at my feet or the main hud view the distance to the windows and the control desk look wrong.
If I use a camera for example in a Type 9 and look at myself from the side I am about 1-2 meters from the control desk, If I look at my feet in normal view It looks like they are under the control desk rather than 1 or 2 meters away

Also the Canopy bars and the view of the windows is far too close when in normal view.

These are the scale issues I have with Elite... Not the scale of a ship compared to a Sun.

I feel that the eyes view fov is wrong.

Just fer the sake of argument, drop down from SC and travel at say fer example twice the speed yer car can go and travel to a point about 1000ls from yer start position.

Ask the same question again after 6 months of staring at the screen and theres yer sense of scale...yer welcome ^

I believe your picture actually hurts your argument. You would have been better off posting a pic from inside the cockpit facing and locked on the star to show the distance between you and the star. Then go to any large planet and take a picture at the same distance. This effect is especially noticeable when comparing a Supergiant star to even a extremely large Gas giant planet.

While not perfect, the devs have done a substantially good job overall with scale of designed assets. Many other games with a space setting hardly bother. I would echo the camera features could use more freedom and improvements, such as better zoom in closer to ships, "snap-in" or gradual "spot-plane" views, and saved camera positions.

I can agree with your first two sentences. Only those who pay really close attention to detail will notice. The Old Duck already has a thread going discussing this topic.

This - the only bit that feels wrong to me is the cockpit size vs CMDR size and then the relative view from the seat.
I've no idea how big a star should look while fuel scooping, having never actually done it. Much to my eternal disappointment...

That's not an Eagle, it's a Capital Ship.

You could try using a picture like this which has a decent field of view indicator with CMDR Cernan in the foreground (yes, a real CMDR at the time :) ) and us 1LS approximately away in the background (well I am old enough to have been in the background at least).

Take that image and see how big objects in ED are when they are 1LS away - that's how I get my sense of scale (that and I use VR - there is no substitute imho).

PS. Don't use the earthrise pics, as they are very small field of view and zoomed in.
