Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I'm definitely hoping for some big improvements and content drops coming in whatever form the next major paid-for expansion brings. That and the oft-mentioned core gameplay improvements are what will bring me back to the game on a more frequent basis than I am currently. Right now I don't fire up the game all that often, and when I do it's for short bursts. I still love it, but it just doesn't hold my interest as much nowadays. I want big, new ways to experience the world and fleshing out of existing mechanics. Then I'll return.

I've seen that comment many times in various places. I tend to refer to Q4 update as "make it or break it" as well, when it comes to my involvement in Elite.

There sure is a lot of hope and expectations for Chapter 4 in the large part of the community, judging by the comments all over the internet, be it these forums, other forums, various Discord severs nad social media platforms...

So just wondering how many people feel similar. Is Chapter 4 going to be "make it or break it" for you?

No. Time has taught me that I will feel the same about Elite no matter what. You see people saying "This feature killed the game for me" or "Thanks to that feature I can play again". I feel none of those things. I play the game. Some features fit into my gameplay and I appreciate them. The rest I don't care about.
So question for me is - will 4.x have features that improve my gameplay or make it more interesting? And the answer is yes, although I don't know what those features are, yet.

You can call me arrogant, but I think this mindset is the best. The moment you leave it up to some feature to decide whether you like the game or not, it's going to end bad, because every and any singular feature, no matter how good, can only entertain you for so long.

I always enjoyed Elite for what it is and took everything else as a bonus. And that won't change. I may get bored of the game, one day. But it won't be thanks to a feature or something the game did. It will be thanks to the countless hours I have and will put in, and there's nothing the game can do to prevent that.

Still. No. No future update will make or break the game for me. Only I can do that.

If someone really needs to go to the absolute binary extreme of a "make or break" situation it probably means it will certainly be a "break" for him/her.

If you have already burnt out on the game (or equivalent) and are expecting the miracle then chances are you will still be as disappointed as you are already. There will be new content and gameplay, for sure, but it will most likely never be enough to pass a "make or break" deal for you. Only a miracle can make players that have already burnt out (or equivalent) to regain full size "make" confidence.

In this 4 years journey I have seen so many Things, so many ups and down during developement, so many Marketing stuff, so many enthusiastic devs, many more enthusiastic community Managers, from the first Elite Meet in Cologne 2014 to FX 17 and so on. From broken Marketing promises to spectacular announcements, from 1000s of open Bugs to an almost stable game.

My conclusion: Expect the unexpected :) (valid for negative AND positive stuff)

:D

I will certainly not stop playing this game. I may extend my breaks, but I don´t think I will put it aside.

Make or break sounds rather drastic, but the conclusion of "Beyond" as a whole, not Q4 in particular, is indeed what i designated as the final measuring pin for myself.
CODEX and exploration updates are the main features of "Beyond" still missing for me, they could still swing my pendulum in favor of buying Horizons, but i'm not holding my breath for it.
Mining to a lesser extent, but that would need to refocus the whole activity away from pure credit generation and towards a resource gathering/crafting/supply+demand direction, which clearly isn't the plan.
For me "revisiting core gameplay" never was about engineers, PP or fleet carriers, it was about what was released in december 2014, aka the game itself.
Of course, i didn't seriously believe that was going to happen.
Still, i have no problem with giving them another few month to finalize "Beyond".
After that i'll either be back into ED on a more frequent basis, or quietly fade away from game and forum.:)

No.
I am looking forward to the Q4 update. But it won’t make or break anything for me.

Way more important for me is/are the next payed content update(s).
Will they feature flight in atmospheres (gas giants and or landable planets)? Will we be able to land on appropriate planets? Will lava planets be part of this? Will there be new SRVs? Will those permit restricted regions be opened and contain alien (Thargoid?) civilizations to interact with?

Not all of the above is necessary for me to be satisfied. But some of it should be delivered in order to make me stay interested in the game for a prolonged period of time.

Nope, not really. FD have done such a great job, imo, with even the totality of Horizons, and now Beyond. Not close to "make or break" for me , but being hopeful for a wonderful future of new bar-setting by ED after Beyond!

I think for me Chapter 4 has already made it.

By that I mean that we've already seen (from Lavecon) examples of ice rendering, lighting improvements and environmental lightning effects taken from dev build in-game footage which will leave me very happy at the end of the year and whatever they come up with in their aims to achieve something close to the ice-world target render they showed at the Expo can only be even better. The proposed exploration changes (even if it's just what was previewed and no more - i.e. limpets that have to be arc'd around a planet to get full coverage) and mining changes (even if it's just what was previewed and no more - i.e. placing charges to break open asteroids) will be icing on the cake and the Codex could turn out to be a pleasant surprise too.

So, the only way FD could break it for me now is if they go back on what they've already shown us.

... of if they mess with the flight model and make it no longer fun to fly a spaceship or drive an SRV! :x

Nope. Game already hit the "broke me" part. What with all the patches and other "updates" it has become apparent that if you want to play alone, that just won't be possible. Even in solo mode.

If Egosoft's X4 is good then I'll drift over to that game.
It's release date is 2018.

If X4 does fulfil its promise and ED Chapter 4 does not then FDev might see a marked reduction in new players and a significant fall in the participation rate of existing players.

If SC gets released and is good ... oh ED will be on Chapter 12.

Hard to tell... If the exploration changes are a total letdown, I won't have any hope left at this point. I'll probably take a long break and try to love NMS or go back to Eve.

I'm still hopeful though : while I always felt the initial exploration proposal was an embarrassing shallow mess, I also consider that FD's promises regarding their expansions were pretty realistic compared to the point releases. So Q4 could be good given what they showed earlier.

Wait and see.

Care to elaborate? OR make a thread about it? I've been playing alone for almost two years, now and I find it quite definitely possible.

Nope.

I still play this game my own way, you know, "Blaze Your Own Trail"...

Some features like Wings, Powerplay, RNgeneering, decipher hidden clues that need a university degree to decode... - don't catch my attention, however, i do still enjoy doing my own thing.
Doing missions for minor/major factions just to gain a positive reputation in certain parts of space, like the Federation welcomes me in their space, so do the Imperials. Now the Alliance are quite friendly too.
Once I figure out how to be friendly in Thargoid space, I will probably work on that one next.

The fact that the developers listen to the community and make the game more enjoyable, (even though it's hard to please everyone) will ensure that I will part with my hard earned real life credits and contribute to the development of this game, as long as there are aspects I enjoy putting time into.

E: D has a long way to go before it is completed, some features I am looking forward to are way out of reach for now, but giving up now won't exactly ensure that those features will see the light of day.

Chapter 4 will indicate to me whether ED is worth re-immersing myself in the whole ED universe, that it's worth more than a bit of casual time now and then.
Currently I'm only using my casual second account, where what happens and what I do is of no consequence (to me).

So on the whole I would say yes it is largely make or break for me in terms of how and when I will play.

Too little content has been added that fits with my desires and too much that doesn't over the last 2 years. If that continues then ED will never be close to what I would wish for from it.
Note this is not saying that FD's decisions are right or wrong, just that many don't work for me. FD was never going to make a game that was perfect for me, so what I have always had to do was pick the bits that did. I'm very much on the SIM side of the SIM <----> GAME and SOLO on the SOLO <----> GROUP spectrums. ED has moved more towards the GAME / GROUP over the last two years, so I'm looking for some shift back the other way.

Well it should be, but I guess I'll just have to use Windows.

ED is a dip in game for me. Might leave it alone for a bit, but I'll always be pulled back.

A complaining gamer is a happy gamer. Every major update has had it's make it or break it camp. There are plenty of things about ED that give me heart burn and I hold out hope that one day the light will come on and they start pushing out ACTUAL content instead of more and more window dressing.

That being said, I don't prescribe to make it or break it thought processes. It implies an acceptance of defeat as a plausible outcome. I am sure the men and women working hard on the game would like it to continue growing and succeed. No one should hedge. You're in or you're not. Holding onto a senew of hope for that improvement YOU desperately think is important does not make a subscription-free game started on crowd funding succeed. You support it, you buy the goofy store stuff to play dress up with our multi-ton dolls and we look forward to that Q4 content and be thrilled we still get updates.

Then we come back here and complain about how this tweak broke my build, or this new story is stupid, or how the update lacked <insert something>
