Greetings, Commanders!
My Name is waldgeist, and I am a commander from Austria, playing the game for about a year now.
I am thinking about emigrating to Colonia (at least for a while), and I realised that this is a step which has to be well planned.
I know that there is a bunch of threads and infos about the topic in the net and the forums,
but still there are some questions - I will try to collect useful threads and info here in this thread.
I'd be glad for any useful infos and links you could share, especially if there already exists
a thread covering all the useful info about "How to plan your trip to colonia in a most effective/economic way" or about "Being in Colonia"
GOING THERE
The Hurt Highway (also Sag A; Beagle Point) https://www.exowing.com/hurt-highway.html
Colonia Connection Highway https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/298533-The-Colonia-Connection-Route-Map / http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Colonia_Connection_Highway
You might wanna use a long-range exploration ship, like a DBX, ASPX or Exploraconda.
Lightwight everything, leve 5-upgrade your FSD + Mass Manager, get a Guardian FSD-Booster, Heat-Sinks, Advanced Disco-Scanner, fast or long-range DSS if you want, AFMU, Repair Limpets and a low-class D-rated shield if you wanna feel safe, take small-class modules & d-rate what you can, lightweight-mod on what you can (sensors!), you might want a mining laser and/or srv for gathering materials, take with you jumponium-materials if you want, slf for fun... Your choice, not everyting is needed for a very quick trip.
FLEET
Some of you might think about moving "a fleet" to colonia, so do I.
Problem is, if you are not super-rich, you will have to pay about *1,3 (130%) of you ships' value (hull & modules) to get it transferred. Also the costs for transfering modules without the ship are the same.
Shipping Costs to Colonia Example https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...is-what-it-costs-to-transfer-ships-to-Colonia
So there are some possiblities:
- Flying every ship yourself & return with a cheep-long-distance ship (eg. DBX), which you have transfered before (61 hours transfer time)
- Paying the transfer-fee (can grow into billions, if you think of fully equipped battle-cutters)
- going there with your most expensive ship (which will have a poor jumprate, taking time, saving money)
- going there eg with an exploraconda kind of ship
- you might wanna go there with passengers, stacking those missions (one way or return plus one-way data courier missions, only available from Tourism economy stations (ian doncaster))
- see post Nr. 7 (Garand1987) for a joyful way of getting to colonia (taking time), he recommends bringing a Python due to it's multi-purpose possibilities
- jijik2 Cutter to Colonia https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/347243-Cutter-to-Colonia
- going there in whatever way and buy there what you can (ships hulls available in colonia) & get the rest (esp. modules) transfered & save some money
- you might wanna engineer (& experimental-effect) the modules you wanna transfer first in the bubble, no extra transfer-cost for this
-
SHIPS/SHIP HULLS available in Colonia
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/66sgwb/outfitting_and_shipyards_updated_in_colonia/
Ships are: Sidewinder, Hauler, Eagle, Adder, Viper Mk3, Cobra Mk3, Viper Mk4, Type 6, Dolphin, DBX, Keelback, Vulture, Type7, ASPX, Orca, FDL, Python, Type 9, Beluga Liner and Anaconda. So generally saying every ship exept those bound to Federation, Empire or Alliance.
MODULES
So, you might decide to buy your hulls in colonia, but you wanna outfit them very well.
My choice will be to buy & engineer every module, which i cannot get in colonia, in the bubble & then get it transferred to colonia.
It seems like the outfitting-thing in colonia is limited to a.) small versions of the modules and b.) generelly rather b- and c-rated (not a-rated).
Modules in colonia: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/393788-Outfitting-once-you-get-to-Colonia
Useful Quotes from this^ link:
Ian Doncaster "
Best local outfitting is at the following stations
Colonia Dream (Ratraii)
Colonia Hub (Colonia - surface)
Robardin Rock (Carcosa)
TolaGarf's Junkyard (Kojeara)
Dervish Platform (Ogmar - outpost)
Edit: Whirling Station (another high class outfitting point)
With the exception of Dervish Platform, these also all have good shipyards if you want to try a different hull.
Generally C-rated equipment is the best that's available. Exceptions to this:
- A-rated refineries, collectors and prospectors available in all sizes
- B-rated modules of most types available in sizes 3 or smaller
- A-rated shield boosters available
- All (non-AX) weapon types and sizes available
Full summary at https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/outfitting
Summary of that: yes, everything is available in all sizes, but a lot of the bigger core/optional internals aren't available in A-rated. (Mostly B-rated, though)"
Major Klutz:
"[...] you can use EDDB to find the modules you're looking for if they are available anywhere in the area.
Here's link to an example https://eddb.io/station?m=945&i=1&r=633211
Just enter the module type you're looking for."

ONCE IN COLONIA
Well, this seems like "the bible for colonia" - and ian doncaster is a very helpful colonian expert: COLONIA DATABASE https://cdb.sotl.org.uk
Colonia Gazette https://eliteccn.com/
Ian Doncaster: "I've summarised the various obvious differences from the bubble at https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/new and the broad history of the last two years at https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/story"
TO DO
Ian Doncaster: "There's lots to see - https://cdb.sotl.org.uk/visit
Get allied with every faction?
Help an engineer upgrade?
Join one of the many player groups - or stay independent?
CGs are roughly every 1-3 months."
MATERIAL TRADERS
- one of each in the region (Ian Doncaster)
TECH BROKERS
- one of each in the region (Ian Doncaster)
MEGASHIPS AND INSTALLATIONS
GUARDIAN SITES, THARGOIDS and THARGOID SITES
- as far as we know, not existant (Ian Doncaster)
ENGINEERS in Colonia
There are new engineers in Colonia, but there are some preconditions before you can use them https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/444749-Guide-to-Engineers-in-Colonia
Inara link https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/
Tip for unlocking Colonia engineers (Ian Doncaster): The Nameless live in Carcosa.
So, right now the engineers deliver a lot of possible upgrades, but so far only level 1 (this, I think, is changing from now on). It will be the colonia-community's possiblity to togheter bring them to level 5.
Remote Engineering via "Bubble-Engineers" is possible, so pin your blueprints carefully.
Adding special effects with Colonia Engineers is possible
Thank you for you help, fly save and see you in the black,

Basically, there's not much in the way of shortcuts. On the other hand, since 3.0 - and including materials spent on engineering seven ships to G4/G5, getting a top 10% finish in a research CG, and putting about 9000 rolls into engineer research - I've basically filled up most of my material reserves anyway just by wandering around, and 3.3 looks like it will make that approach even easier.
Raw materials: lots of volcanism sites as usual. 3.3 will of course make them much easier to find.
The low-end ones you can get very easily from a quick mining session, of course. Pristine Reserves everywhere so you get a good yield.
Some of the tip-off sites in the region have cargo racks with high-grade raw materials which can be re-logged if you're desperate. Any particular site is probably only available about 1/4-1/3 of the time, but there are a lot of sites.
Manufactured materials: there's not really any shortcuts for the high-end materials. Colonia system supercruise is good for Combat Aftermath USS for a lot of the trickier mid-grades. 3.3 looks from Beta like it will make high-grade signal sources very common in uninhabited systems in the region.
There are also a lot of places which offer surface scan or high-end cargo haulage missions, which can be used to get large amounts of EFCs and Biotech Conductors for use or cross-trade.
The wrecked megaship in Luchtaine has a cloud of low-grade manufactured around it, but it's probably not worth visiting specifically for them.
Data materials: lots of installations and megaships for data piracy, and the missions mentioned above will get you lots of Modified Embedded Firmware (plus various other bits if you do the surface scan missions, of course) for cross-trades.
A couple of the installations have satellites which can be scanned for a quick bit of low-grade data. Again, more something you'd do while you're there for other reasons than a primary source.
Jaques Station is ridiculously busy with tourist traffic so you can pick up all your wake data there.
Thank you for you help, fly save and see you in the black,
