News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

Will there be any noisy environmental factors that affect the acuity of this scan process when the player or the object being scanned are near, such as planetary nebulae, noisy gas giants, neutron stars and black holes?

Secondly, will other players' micro-probes be visible in supercruise? Consider the spectacle of a large exploration vessel spamming tens of probes flashing towards a planet.

Also, how much situational awareness will a pilot be able to retain while using this scanner view? I'm thinking of looking for USS using it, in populated systems, will the first I know of it be the interdiction SFX?

A couple of my questions, since I lost track somehow in the middle of the thread:

- Will scanners be moved to utility slots?

- Are we going to distinguish different forms of electromagnetic radiation (radio, x-ray, microwave etc) when reading a system's energy signature? Much like distinguishing outcrops from metallic asteroids on the wavescanner?

- Will there be orbit lines in SC once we honk a system?

- Will explorers out in the black receive free batch of probes upon release without having to synth them?

- Will there be an option to "conserve" exploration data to prevent loss upon a ship's destruction?

It sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm a VR player, and one major issue I've had when exploring is that the System Map is super wonky. Clicking on the right planet doesn't always work right, which currently really really slows down exploring and forces me to do it in 2D just so I can target the specific planets I wanna scan.

Perhaps the new ADS/DSS functionality solves this, but can we "flatten" the System Map in VR so that it works similar to the station menus? Those always work perfect for me in VR. Or instead can we add more functionality to the left-hand tabs in the System Map? Those work great in VR as well, and when I'm in the Bubble and everything is discovered I can use the tabs to select my specific destination. Out in the black we can't use the tabs in the same way, so we're left to try to target the specific destinations by hand and it's one of the few flaws of Elite's VR.

The Galaxy Map works just fine if one uses a controller, and it'd be awesome if the System Map could have some tweaks to make it easier to use in VR.

I'm excited to see the new phenomena and see the ADS/DSS in action! Hopefully you create a tutorial for launch to help the players who don't watch the streams or pay attention to the forums.

I would say I'm happy, but then I have a doubt - how does this fit with existing non-exploration use of the discovery scanner?

Say, I jump into an unknown - to me - system within the bubble, say for a mission, and I have to go to a given planet. At that time I am not interested in looking around for things - I just want to find that planet and go there fast. Now, I just honk the scanner, detect the planet and set course. What happens with this new mechanism?

This is a very valid point. Rep+1

Speed in executing missions is critical. If we have to spend an hour with this new mechanic every time we jump into a system to make a delivery, it will very quickly kill the benefit of trading missions.

I love the idea of this, I really do. But as always with FD, i fear the manner in which it may be implemented.

Will there still be a basic, intermediate and advanced discovery scanner, or are they rolled into one?

If there still are 3 versions, what are the differences?

So the current basic loadout for explorer ship is:
shield
dss
ads
fuel scoop
No problem, even the sidey can do this.

Add SRV requirement for synth these ships can no longer be fit for exploration
viper
eagle
ieagle
DBS
hauler
sidey

Was this really the plan?

No, based on what we're hearing, a basic exploration setup becomes easier, because you can leave out the DSS and collect the same data that today requires ADS+DSS. The new system adds a new type of data -- mapping data -- and you would need the new DSS to fire mapping probes, and potentially an SRV to resupply them. And it sounds like the mapping data doesn't include much that would be useful without an SRV anyway, since it's mostly about surface sites and resources.

Hi Adam,
Many thanks for taking the time to answer the questions, much appreciated. The changes look really good, particularly pleased that there will still be a way to quickly decide if a system is worth exploring further.

Two points:
1. the DSS probes, please don't make the material gathering/sythesis arduous, it shouldn't be a barrier or time sink(also see question below)
2. Please don't increase the time needed to find mission targets. Maybe either continue to locate them from the honk, or a direct link from the mission description to buy the system data?

Question:
Do you have any plans to help the ships with fewer slots with exploration?
Reason being (and EUS pointed out) we would NEED an srv to explore properly (for the DSS mats for probes) which rules out any ship with 4 slots or less. It'd be good if those so inclined (ie.the nutters -much respect oh crazy ones-) can still use their Sidewinders to properly explore on their way to Beagle Point. I'd like to be able to take out the DBS.

Cheers :)

I thought you could use the data available on the galmap, if it's an already visited inhabited system that you haven't been to then buy the system data, been in game as far back as I can recall, that way you didn't need scanners etc???

I wonder if the 30-60 bodies that make up asteroid belts are going to mess up the sensors.
Assume they'll be on the lowest of energy spectrum.

I'm pleased with this, it sounds pretty awesome.
I wonder what the synthesis costs for new probes will be. I hope it won't be too high cos I'm hoping that my next trip out into the black will last between 6 and 12 months, so I'd almost certainly have to synthesise new probes.

In the 2nd screenshot only 4 materials are listed. I've not seen a landable with so few mats. Will the mats on landables be changing such that all my bookmarks for them need to be updated/deleted?

How quick is the Discovery Scan process? That is, will it be possible to learn the signals, to still be able to make a quick assessment of the star system without scanning anything yet?

A lot of explorers currently enjoy being able to make a snap decision, based on the honk and system map, and just move on if it's a boring star system (full of just icy bodies, for instance). Will it be possible to quickly glance at the scanner, and see that none of the signals are worth a more detailed look?
