Will there be more than 2 New Ships?

Every ship in Elite can be used for everything, that does not mean that they will do it well or that they will be fun to use for everything (i doubt most people would have fun doing combat in a hauler)
My hope is that the krait phantom will be a ship siting between the asp and the conda as far as exploration goes.

I haven't followed all the discussions around here so pardon my ignorance, but isn't it possible that the Mamba is actually an exploration vessel?
I noticed it had a large hardpoint, but I also remember it being referenced as a racing ship... So apart from the hardpoint, couldn't it be that it's a fast, light ship, with good jumprange, with a catamaran-shaped hull suited not for large bulkheads, but for several smaller compartments?

To be fair, it is very similar to racing and fast ships in other universes, so people assuming it is ship really not meant for exploration have a point. It is all flashy, and I doubt it is forte of exploration ships.
Yes could it be, but based on the limited number of screenshots that we have I would say that the cockpit view from the Mamba isn't suited for exploration, for a lot of explores out there this aspect of the ship is a strong point when choosing an exploration vessel.

I doubt it, it has at least two size 3 hardpoints and a size 4 in the middle.. looks like a larger version of the FDL to me.
Now, that would really cool and fresh as far as ship goes. Instead of medium combat ship #17
I think there should definitely be a new premium Exploration ship.. The Mamba shouldn't be it though. We've needed something to rival the FDL for a while and the Mamba fits this space nicely.
I must admit though I'm a little surprised Fdev have gone with what appears to be two medium combat-orientated ships in this update..
Well....after Alliance Chieftain 1, 2 and 3 nothing surprises me anymore
Got to admit it's more than a little disappointing to hear we are only getting the two ships seen in beta. Don't get me wrong both editions are welcome to the game but it would have been nice to see another new design to finish off the chapter. Particularly something that doesn't appear to be so combat orientated.
I think it would be wise for FDev to better manage expectations in the future. "Ships" could mean any number, of which two is the bare minimum. Inevitably this had lead to speculation within the community. The Krait Phantom was probably the worst kept secret. IIRC this was leaked alongside the crusader on the store shortly after chapter 2, so we have been expecting it for a while. With the initial chapter 4 reveal they should have announced the Krait Phantom and teased an all new ship before revealing it on the upcoming livestream.

Well they did kinda "announce" the Krait Phantom by having it in the Chapter 4 Teaser Trailer

Funny - I've just found out about the Mamba; it looks like a catamaran variant of the FDL & to me, it appears slightly smaller overall, if anything. But I haven't studied it in detail so you may well be right.
Why isn't there more fuss about this ship? At first glance, it has the potential to become the heir apparent for apex combat, at least on a par with the FDL. Also, how refreshing - just what the game really needs right now - a medium combat ship!![blah] Despite my completely-out-of-character sarcasm, I'm really looking forward to testing it.

I'm not "threatening" anything, I can't even watch the stream live as I'll be at work, so I can't do anything. All I'm saying is that a lot of people who WILL be in the chat will not be happy if both are just more combat ships. Many players were expecting something different this time around.
It's not just exploration.
When was the last time a dedicated trading ship was released? Surely people who enjoy playing as traders would like some variety as well. Then there's also mining, pirating, exploration, etc.
