Anyone read this?:

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...head-mounted-upgrade-becomes-a-vr-controller/

Imagine having your in game hands and arms moving like your real hands and arms! You could potentially even control your ship with it, imagine getting rid of the keyboard and using the in game keyboard in the cockpit by having the game map the position of your fingers on it! And your joystick would only be there so you have something to grip, the game could work without it!

If FDEV could incorporate leap motion into E: D it would be twice as awesome!

Yes, linked it earlier. :)

Combine that with Voice Attack, and you really have a Star Trek "holodeck" type experience. Or at least, as close as we can get in 2014.

Try it on your tv

Try it on your tv it should be fine :)

Oculus is a bit of a red herring at the moment, I use a sony hmz t2 headset can read the text and all with it, the thing is....

Just because ED will support the oculus will it actually be playable with it ?
See ED is a game you play for hours you don't just jump in play for 30 mins then stop, imho virtual reality does not lend itself to lengthy gaming sessions, due to eye strain, misting up etc, and the need to occasionally maybe type a system name and general comfort, so I would conclude that the oculus at least for ED will be a short lived fad.

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

You're wrong. :p Various people have already proven that by only playing ED in the Rift and not enjoying the game on a normal monitor afterwards.

Yes, the Rift experience isn't all it can be at the moment but the pros it brings outstrip the cons for many people... and it will only get better!

nope

Nope I am not wrong, have you seen anybody play on an Oculus for more than 1 hr ? Sure it's better than a monitor..for about 1 hr then it becomes uncomfortable hot and tedious that is the nature of wearing something over your face for more than an hr no matter what development level it is at. ED is a game designed to be time consuming and therefore is not suited to virtual reality..although you think it is..for about an hr.

I suspect Star Citizen will be more suited as you can have quick dogfights etc and not really get involved so it's a more "casual" game, Oculus will be great for "casual" games.

I play ED using a DK2. I cant play it any other way. While the resolution could be better, and will be when the CV1 comes out, its still very good now. I can play for a few hours at a time without the need for a break.

ED is a great example of a game thats very comfortable to use inside VR, as your in a cockpit sitting in a chair and in my case using a Hotas system. All this combined = less disconnect, meaning its more natural an environment to game in, which in turn gives you less chance of becoming VR sick.

I say go for it, but like I said, it does have its drawbacks, resolution being the biggest one and next up in FOV.

I forgot all about Sony's HMD, leads to me to think that their own VR unit could be out sooner than we think given they already have experience with head mounted units.

3 hrs, you have a lot more stamina than me sir I salute you ! I generally need to have a smoke at least once every 30 minutes or type a system name at some point meaning it comes off, after taking the headset on and off a few times, i just thought yeh this looks great an all but it's just not practical so have stopped using headset for ED unless drunk :)

Yes you are wrong! :p ;) You're expressing your personal experience as if it translates to everyone else - it does not. Many people easily play for longer periods (as the poster above proves) and I have played for several hours (not that I regularly do because I'm limiting my ED time) even with the DK1, let alone DK2.

Dont get me wrong, I still need breaks, I think you would be silly to stay in there longer than 2/3 hours at a time without a short break. And ofcours its still impractical to use in conjunction with a keyboard, even more so when online and your wanting to chat to other players. There are a lot of issues to still overcome, but imo just for the imersion factor, i cant go back to a monitor setup, in this game anyway! :)

erm

Well I can't express an opinion from anyone else point of view now can I?
What I will say is time will tell, you say yay, I say nay, so it looks like some people will manage with it..non smokers, people who don't need to drink tea or anything else, you see we first have to actually decide what "play time" is, I would suggest that if the headset is removed once for any reason then the time is reset, my guess is our friend here played 3 hrs but probably did take the headset off at some point for some reason even if that was to scratch an itchy eyelid... which yes that does happen too.

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

So because of your experience with an inferior headset the dk2 is also ****.
Tell me how that works? In drive a ford t but that McLaren f1 should handle the same...

Its also strange that everyone with a dk2 praises it and someone who hasn't tried it talks it down.
If your in the Netherlands your free to come and try it.
Better to experience it yourself.

Also it's a big hassle just taking time to arrange everything just so around you, just wires all over the place from joystick, headset headphones just irks me :)
Oh and yeh typing is impossible as you say.

I traded for 2 weeks solid wouldn't have liked to do that with a headset, am thinking dogfighting is where it's at :)

I just got my DK2 quite recently and it has altered the way I play Elite. The dogfights are amazing! I just keep going back to the Federation Distress Signal again and again. I shouldn't be doing this. My graphics card isn't up to the job of providing a smooth experience but it is still amazing anyway.

I tried going back to trading, which is better on something with a higher resolution display, but things on my monitor now look a little... flat.

lol

LOL and inferior headset they are £999 use twin oleds and give native 3d, trust me it is better in every way than the current DK2, I use track ir and it's all good :)
Actually I would say your post was correct just the wrong way round the DK2 is the ford. Oh and when I mentioned misting up I wasn't talking about the HMZ I was referring to the occulus

I often wondered what the Sony hmz t2 headset would be like with head tracking. I thought the problem with this would be the narrow field of view and maybe latency. Have you had a chance to try an Oculus Rift?

Go karts can be more fun than McLaren f1s.

Without wanting to get confrontational commander, I couldn't disagree more...
I have been on holiday for the past two months and have been playing ED daily for at least three or four hours (sometimes more)... All using the rift.

It is admittedly not exactly a "plug and play" situation at the moment, but once the new SDK has been integrated this should no longer be an issue.

My main occupation in game has been "trader" and the wonder of flying your own ship from station to station, marvelling at the moons, planets and suns as they pass you by keeps me coming back day after day. It is nothing short of amazing! I do not get tired, it is not uncomfortable and it is not hot - even after wearing it for hours on end. I do admittedly take it off every 45 mins for a few minutes to go to the loo or check my email or whatever (as anybody with any common sense would do), but I have nothing negative to say about the experience whatsoever.

I don't know if you have actually tried playing ED with the rift, or if you actually own one, but if that is the case, I can only suggest that you haven't set it up correctly if these are your experiences.

OP: This game for me seems flat (quite literally) when I try to play on a gaming monitor now. The DK2 is still very much a work in progress, but ED shows off the potential of this device in a way that is truly mind blowing! I would personally try to get to a demo before deciding whether or not is for you, but I just wanted to post an alternative viewpoint, as I couldn't have had a more different experience. :)
Ps. You can see clearly from the photo that gaming in the rift all summer hasn't done me any harm whatsoever! :D
