Too many buttons presses

Like the title says their just is, i came back after quiet a long break to discover I have yet another load of controls to map to somewhere because being honest i've just ran out of devices and ways to do it.

I have keyboard mapped and Hotas mapped and a control pad mapped because i use VR and the navigation in Vr around the galaxy map is just terrible, so after my break to come back and see yet more keys to bind i just gave up.

I think a lot of people would agree the control system mapping to do in this game is a time consuming nightmare!, and I really don't know how new players or casual players are going to cope with it like this.

Sorry for ranting but it is really frustrating, please devs try to make that process more stremlined and easier to do without needing to read an encyclopaedia full of knowledge to just learn the controls.

Mapping is infinitely upto you and can be a simple or complex as you desire. With a controller, one button, then every other button can be combined alone, then another with every button. Makes it very straight forward. On a keyboard, you could have a favourite key, easy to access then combine it with neighbouring keys, such as the numeric pad etc.

When an update introduces new bindings, I just default then redo what my preferences were. Takes me two minutes. So to streamline things, I'd suggest sticking with one key or two then working around the combinations to cover the essentials, bearing in mind some won't clash since they're in different modes.

If I were a new player, I would be thrilled.

Part of what has made elite 2000+ hours worth of great for me is having so much stuff to figure out.

not sure if you're aware, but every button doesn't have to be a unique bind.
the keys/axes i've bound for the FSS stuff all have other functions outside the FSS.

Also, you don't need to map every single option they provide.
- 1 button for enter/exit
- the stick for directional control
- Zoom in/out (the hotas hat switch is great for this)
- and a paddle, dial, or twist stick for the frequency tuner.
That's pretty much it.

I know it looks like a lot when you first look at it. But once you find binds for the main controls that work for you, it's really not that bad.

I think there are just 3 new buttons that you need.
-Night vision
-Toggle Hud Mode
-Switch to FSSS

Everything else is just a variation of execisting controlls for a special application, but it would be nice if it could been by default mapped to the normal key/axis. E.G. Up/Down/Left/Right
Or an even simpler example: 'Exit FSSS' and 'Exit DSS' could just by default be mapped to 'exit menu'

Yes i did find it an odd choice of fdev to not apply those kinds of binds onto the default maps for each type of controller options...

Minor issue but a time saver for the poor sod who just finished a nightshift and a patch download.

I put away a controller I’ve been using for years and opened up a new one.

I haven’t actually tried to map it all to the new controller yet.

My main problem is that it’s hard to tell what a function will “Do” from the menu.
So I mapped a bunch of things and then found that was a dead end because I needed some other thing to be there.
I dunno. Maybe it will be better, but I’m struggling to find the will to go and fix everything so I can play again.

Maybe i’ll take a break from ED.
Play something else for a while.

Just wait until Space legs, then every button will be mapped to actual buttons in the cockpit!

[wacky]

At least in the Krait I can finally turn the coffee machine on!

This. I don't mind having to bind new stuff, but without knowing what it does exactly it's a bit unclear. I'd rather access the new exploration mode the way I access contacts or navigation panel or galaxy map (press 1 and then Q / E - A / D to go through options I have). I feel that would be more intuitive and more in line with the existing UI. Especially that panels got reorganised, so it feels like it would be better to use them to toggle the new exploration system.

Yeah it’s not rocket surgery. Just return to default and then figure out the customizations from there. It’s 1000% easier than custom mapping a new feature that you don’t know how to use.

I play on XB1 and everything fits well on the controller, so it can be done on PS4 and easily on the computer

When a game you play where you use a hotas joystick and throttle control, keyboard, mouse, Xbox control pad all while your blind in VR you're no longer a gamer you're super human :).

fdev thinks that by adding convoluted UI's and more keybindings they can add the much needed "depth" to the game. sadly it only adds more hoops to jump through to get to the same content.

Too true. This is just them out of touch. Top it with that they haven't replied to anyones concerns about the new garbage mechanics and it shows how tone deaf they are. Even a mega studio like Epic Games responded to player concerns about their "Fortnite" game having some new ridiculous super weapon breaking matches and removing it in only a few days. This Elite patch is out longer than that and aside from White Knights everyone hates the discovery scanner changes. Probes for planets are great, this too-many-bindings issue for adding a minigame that takes you out of the actual gameplay is just tedious monotony. I saw plenty of suggestions over the years in the forums, but no one asked for this system.

I and many thousands of console players seem to manage just fine with a game controller with 14 buttons and the default key bindings. Frontier do a fantastic job on the default key bindings!

I really don't understand how you can have a hotas, a throttle and a keyboard and mouse at your disposal and still be complaining you don't have enough input devices!. I understand that VR is different especially in the maps.

I see, so if we like this patch we are a "white knight" a term that you seem to use derogatorily. And yet if someone happens to agree with you then that group is classified as "everyone hates the discovery scanner changes".

People have different opinions. No need to label and attempt to insult them simply because you have a different view.

I am certain there are players in both camps. But you have zero evidence of the numbers involved. And your attempts to whitewash the situation by making wild claims about how the whole player base feels is at best disingenuous and at worst petty and entitled.

So to use your vernacular.. I'm proudly white knighting this upgrade.

Yes i would have prefered if it was part of the cockpit UI , maybe further down the line it could be streamlined an some more QoL changes but as a start off point i can work with it but could use some more "love".

Making the cockpits we spend so much time in more interactive and engaging would in my opinion add so much more to the game. Not a complaint but more of a hopeful "maybe one day".

Okay - I'm having another go at this.

What does energy tuning failed mean?
