FSS. Fine but.... Restore discovery scanner please!

The only way that can be a better idea is if you are happy to be pressing buttons and scrolling cursors and call it 'gameplay'. Which I accept a lot of you are.
If you aren't careful then people are going to start realising that all computer games are just pressing buttons and scrolling cursors and calling it gameplay.

People might even go back to reading books and going for walks in the park and that simply wouldn't do.

I was under the impression that was removed? You mean I don't need to use this farce to get my system scan? If so I'm done, happy days.

Are you a tralveing explorer or a "real" explorer?

Jump, Honk, Jump = Traveler
Jump, Honk, DSS scan everything = Die Hard Explorer

Jump, Honk, Jump = Works the same way now; probably a bit more money compared to prior.
Jump, Honk, DSS scan = Can now be done without actually having to travel 500K Ls in order to scan the planet; some people have DSS-scanned systems with over 150 boddies in less than 20 minutes with this new system. DSS-scanning, in the past, meant that you had to travel close enough to each body in order to DSS-scan it. In a system with 150+ bodies, that would have taken hours and hours to do with the old system.

This is what this new system is about.

Probing is a NEW layer... yes... this means that you have to travel to the planet to probe it.

However, during the DSS-scanning (that now can be done without having to travel to the planet) it will reveal the number of Surface POIs, such as 37 Geological structures, 15 Biological structures, 5 Guardian structures, 1 Thargoid Structure.

So, you only need to travel to bodies that show something you are interested in... once there, you probe it, and it will show POIs that you can land on.

If this, still, doesn't feel like an upgrade to exploration... I'm not sure what to say to you, to be honest. :)

I absolutely love the new discovery system. It gave it much needed depth.

Genuinely amazed how anyone could think that this new feature has depth. It's a sideways move from the original mode.

Let me stop you there.

It still does. Learn how to read the graph presented.

Look here!

Yes, all well and good, but when in system view, easily accessed from ship console, I need a quick picture of planets and rough distances so I can target them for further investigation. If I see 10 icey worlds 5000 LS away I'll probably not bother.
I'm not interested in numbers, give me a picture, how about a system map view with a picture of each planet, then I'll decide if it's worth scanning further.

If I have to spend a frustrating 5 minutes in FSS working out if I want to be bothered, I'll lose the will to live.

FSS is half a job and not done well even at that. To many controls, awkward to use and not in keeping with a game about flying a spaceship.
I want to fly my ship, not sit in an office chair, reading statistics and numbers, I do that at work.

Thank you! Finally someone tells me what the actual use of it is for. I'm more the traveller. Jump honk, checkoff any Metal or Earth Likes and jumps to next system if none.

If the earth like is too far away I'm jumping out. So lazy traveller. I prefer to just get to the nebula or wherever in the shortest timeframe. Like I said multiple times, I'm happy that those who like the new system, finally got something to pleasure them. It does nothing for me, but that's my problem.

Again, thank you for the simple explanation.

If you are only interested in flying your ship, those 10 icey worlds 5000 ls away wouldn't be a chore would it?

I understand your frustration. Are you one of those Content Creators who wants to do pretty movies and such?

I do understand their frustration having a blank system-map after a honk. However, most of them are aware that this is a game and that Exploration, as it was, were abysmal to say the least.

How much have you been collecting materials on the surface of planets? Do you feel confident in using the Wave-scanner of the SRV?

If you have been doing that, and feel confident with the Wave-scanner.... give this new mechanic a bit of time...

It is like The Matrix... in the beginning, you only see code... but then you start so see redheads, blondes agents etc.

I understand your frustration, but give it time. :)

I have read lots of replies, but the simple facts are:
1. Discovery scanner has been made virtually useless.
2. I think the FSS mechanic is poorly implemented.
3. This new method of exploration has been forced on all players, despite many complaints.
3a. It could have worked well with existing mechanisms.
4. It takes you away from the experience of flying a spaceship.
5. I'm really glad I got Elite in exploring before this update.

Cool!

So... instead of opening System-map after a honk, you open FSS scanner, watch the graph at the bottom, and you can instantly tell if there are any Earthlikes etc. in the system (after some practice, of course; it is a new way of seeing things, after all and I posted an image of what to look for). And yes, the honk will give you the same, if not more (I think FD increased the money regarding Exploration), money since it will register all bodies in the system, just like the old FSS scan/honk.

Also, I am very glad that I helped you through...

Lots of new things to learn, agreed. But in the long-run, I suspect you will really like this new system of Exploration.

I appreciate your helping, but Im already Elite Explorer on all my accounts, with each having billions in surplus, so I would never be exploring for credits. I disliked it [FSS] from the moment I opened it, so I doubt I'll use it by choice. Maybe if Im hunting Guardian sites or something like that.

But I say again, thanks for the help.

This is so true! I can look at a waveform an pretty much instantly shrug and move on, or see an Earth-like AND an Ammonia world and immediately get to scanning. (Did that the other night... was a glorious moment! - Shame there wasn't anything else of interest....)

I can decipher roughly what is in a system in the blink of an eye. I can scan a whole system in minutes. I cannot deep-scan every planet any quicker - and that's probably how it should be. But I DO know if that planet has surface features I should probably be interested in. And that's something the old DSS could never do.

1. Discovery scanner has been made virtually useless.

What? Please elaborate.

2. I think the FSS mechanic is poorly implemented.

You have to elaborate on that one as well. Saying that it is poorly implemented also means that I can think "You are too stupid" (I certanly do not mean that, but, I hope you get what I am after here).

3. This new method of exploration has been forced on all players, despite many complaints.

Many complaints? Do you have numbers to back this up?

3a. It could have worked well with existing mechanisms.

Would love to hear some examples of this! Trust me... I really do!

4. It takes you away from the experience of flying a spaceship.

In what way? Most SCI-FI movies I've watched, most of the time, people are looking at different screens, instead of looking out the canopy. Even modern fighter-jets, pilots are looking at screens in normal flight. The only time they are _really_ looking at heads-up display is when they are engaged in combat/takeoff/landing.

5. I'm really glad I got Elite in exploring before this update.

Congrats! I loathed the old way of Exploration, so I will head out and do a lot of that now... well... after I have built a proper Exploration Anaconda... trust me... I am eager to get out there and help fill the Codex up!

:)

If you want to know how to carry on doing that quickly I did another post on it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ed-to-before?p=7250900&viewfull=1#post7250900

Or when someone finds something in the Codex that you want to check out without going out of the game to find it (as in guides, youtube etc). ;)
