I had a random thought this morning.
With Subnautica being made free for a few weeks, I wondered if, when EDs player numbers are beginning to fall (obviously, not now, as old players are returning, and the new patch is peaking interest), if EDs base game was occasionally made free for a few a week or two (for life, like Subnautica), then just charge more for horizons/season 3+(or whatever)...
It'd entice new players, who may or may not stick around, but a big old "free!" price tag is far more appealing than even a low price.
And new players can potentially generate more income from expansions and cosmetics.
Like I said, just a random thought!
I'm not sure how these companies cover the costs of giving stuff away free. But when something is free, I often snap it up just to try it out, like I've done with Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Watchdogs, Subnautica, and many others. I've yet to actually spend money on a free game though, so maybe I'm not the best example... Lol
