I am not really a very exprienced miner but decided to give it a go to see how the changes are working. After reading the mining ship discussion i opted to not take out my clumsy mining anaconda but instead try the clipper.
I equipped just a seismic charge launcher, abrasion blaster and a pulse wave. I dropped into a hotspot and after using about 30 prospector limpits did not find a single asteroid to seismic charge. I tried the abrasion blaster on a few surface deposits and just got terribly frustrated at not being able to keep up with the asteroid rotation and hit anything. After about 2 hours i gave up and went home. What i did manage to gather did not pay for the fuel i used.
I almost decided to not mine again but then thought i should give it one more try in a different ship. I brought my old combat python out of retirement, the good ship 'Not Invented Here' and refitted it for mining.
I put on a seismic charge launcher, abrasion blaster, sub-surface displacement missiles and a pulse wave. I kept 2 large beam lazers for defence in case of pirates. I dropped into a hotspot in a different system from my first attempt and starting pulsing and probing. The python was far easier to maneuver into position to launch the seismic charges and use the abasion blaster. I found plenty of juicy asteroids to blow up, love the explosion effect. I ended up not really using the displacement missiles, it almost seemed redundant once i worked out how to get a good yield from the seismic charges.
It took me a couple of hours to use up all my limpits and i was getting much quicker at the process towards the end. Overall it was a fun and rewarding experience and i am glad i made a second attempt. I didnt really pay attention to the value of what i was collecting, i was just happy to be enjoying the gameplay and i got a nice surprise when i sold up back at the station. I made about 25 million for my 2 hours, not as much as i can make in other ways, but i am sure i will get better at it with some more practice and trying different places.
The moral of my badly worded story (im very tired after 4 hours ish of very 'chilled' gameplay), is, use a PYTHON, its like it was made for it, weapon alignment is perfect, you have more equipment bays than you need, can carry a good tonnage and defend effectively against pirates.
I should in fairness to the clipper mention that the python was a fully engineered combat beast before the conversion and the clipper had zero engineering.
I hope this convinces a few more people to try mining, its really quite cool now.
