Call for Explorers - NGC 188 now reachable

EDIT: after a more careful look at it, it seems this was done through an exploit, so it is NOT possible to reach NGC 188 yet! it is also in very poor exploration spirit to use exploits to get to a place before everyone else..

I was recently shocked at discovering that on EDSM, it seems like a player had actually managed to send data from the NGC 188 star cluster.
It's located southwest of the Bubble, a few thousand lightyears away, but just high up above the galactic plane to not be reachable.
So, i figured, that this was some player that asked support to teleport them there, and felt pretty cheated out of this discovery.

Except.. upon asking EDSM administration, it seems like this big cluster of stars IS in fact reachable now.
I visited the area under it quite a while ago with a Conda, and clearly had not minmaxed it enough, as even with the few nearby neutron stars, i just couldn't make any jump to it. That, or i tried doing it before FSD boosters, i'm not sure.

It seems like a CMDR VoidKnight quietly figured out a trick to do it, because according to EDSM's logs, there is some way to get to and back from it, with a base jump range of about 78 lightyears.

That's a pretty tall order even for a Conda, but it is possible with serious engineering & an empty fuel tank. I do know there are a number of neutron stars right underneath the cluster, but i didn't see any inside it, so it seems like a bit of a mystery on how to get back..

Since i am busy with DW2 and can't go and check it out myself, i would really love for someone to get a nice outfit out there and check the area out.
It's a big, mysterious cluster of faraway class K stars that's been totally unreachable before now, and so i can't help but be incredibly curious at what is in there.. just do bring a really good jump range, the best you can get.

!!!
Please do also be aware that I can't guarantee that this is actually possible. It LOOKED like it was a legitimate jump, but because this CMDR has stayed completely private about this and not revealed any information or route past an EDSM sync, I can't verify it. This is something very new you're trying out, so be prepared for the possibility of having to turn back disappointed, or a self destruct.

Here is the EDSM twitter account stating how long the jump was: https://twitter.com/EDSM_NET/status/1095984235960328193
!!!

...so, if this star cluster is truly possible to reach now, then who knows what out there is now open to visit?
What next, a return from Ex Cancri?

Curious too as to how the cmdr got there legitimately. Eyeballing the distance to the nearest star says ~700Ly, still a great more then the longest possible boosted jump currently possible. I could be wrong though.

Think Cancri cluster is tagged, due to a Support case cluster-duck.

using a neutron boost with little fuel meant you could jump 740LY so cancri and other places were ripe for tags recently... or perhaps its still in the game...

I scouted quite a few of the systems underneath it a couple of years ago, and recently went back to map some of the worlds and double check that it still wasn't reachable with Guardian boosters. I think the closest I could get was 400 LYs.

I know there's a neutron star system right under the cluster but as far as I remember its still too far to make the jump to NGC 188?... its worth checking out with a maxed-out ranged Conda (something I never had with me at the time). With the bug linked on that post, that obviously makes the cluster reachable, without the bug I'd be very interested to know how it was done! :)

The fact that there's data on EDSM doesn't mean they could get back to sell the data and get the tags. I don't see any neutron stars in the cluster: if so, even with an exploit, it would be a one-way trip. (Unless the double-charging bug is back.) But it would be best if we could hear from EDSM what that specific jump (that required 78 ly) was - and whether that system is reachable without exploiting.

Regarding the exploit, there was also this:
Just going to jump in here (no pun intended....) and clarify that this is a bug/exploit of the game and we will be investigating this. Whilst I understand your frustration regarding other issues in the game, I should also state that doing these types of jumps will flag your account on our anti-cheating pass and your accounts will be actioned against, if deemed fit. We have already noticed multiple jumps being flagged as a little out of the ordinary, so it would be advisable to refrain from attempting to reproduce this, or obtaining the info from OP as it may result in your accounts being actioned against.

im pretty sure the same bug can be used without neutron boosts to get circa 400LY IIRC, i dont dabble in such delights so cant comment weather its still in the game or not.

If indeed it has been reach by legitimate means ... great well done, i'd love to see a route so i could have a crack myself - if not then the tags should be removed.

God damn it. I was already planning on a solo expedition there, or at least the attempt.

78 Ly base range => 312 Ly neutron jump. So either there is a ~312 Ly jump possible, or there is a bug.

Edit: I have a possible route, someone will need to help since a bunch of these aren't in EDSM:

1) Ploea THE GH-V d2-1 -> Ploea GX-T d3-0
2) Ploea GX-T d3-0 -> Ploea THE AM-U d3-0
3) Ploea THE AM-U d3-0 -> Ploea THE YG-U d3-0

Ploea THE YG-U d3-0 -> somewhere in NGC 188

That last one is the one that needs some checking, since I can't confirm if any of those jumps are at or less than 312 Ly.

Note 2: This wasn't the route Cmdr VoidKnight took, or if it was, he didn't submit logs for those systems. Which is honestly kind of a jerk thing to do imo.

I searched some of those systems and the galmap didn't track an existing system.

Edit: In particular, Ploea THE YG-U d3-0 doesn't show up when introducing it in the galmap search tool.

I’ve also noticed this. It turns out Galmap will sometimes not return valid systems!

If you go to NGC 188 and go vertical downward you’ll eventually hit it.

I didn't find it, could you provide rough coordinates? NGC 188 is a rather large object so the volume below it is considerably big.

I am currently there with my second account in a 81ly Anaconda and I can't see any chance to reach NGC 188.

The highest system reached is PLOEA THE YQ-U D3-0 (first discorvered by Erimus) and there is still a gap of 480.19ly to the lowest system in NGC 188 (NGC 188 SMV 4385)...

The Gnosis can do 500 LY - if slowly - and there's no indication that there's anything dangerous up there this time. So maybe there is a way?

I would beware of believing EDSM too much.. it would be easy to fake an entry to EDSM to say you got there.. only visual evidence of many screenshots would suffice.

Yep, I also got there last night and I can say, I didn't find any other stars between the cluster and me.

OK so I haven't checked enough when you asked me on Twitter, but here the history.
Did look ok to me or would have take a lot of work to fake.

Now if someone check and tell me it is, I'll delete it.
