EDIT: after a more careful look at it, it seems this was done through an exploit, so it is NOT possible to reach NGC 188 yet! it is also in very poor exploration spirit to use exploits to get to a place before everyone else..
I was recently shocked at discovering that on EDSM, it seems like a player had actually managed to send data from the NGC 188 star cluster.
It's located southwest of the Bubble, a few thousand lightyears away, but just high up above the galactic plane to not be reachable.
So, i figured, that this was some player that asked support to teleport them there, and felt pretty cheated out of this discovery.
Except.. upon asking EDSM administration, it seems like this big cluster of stars IS in fact reachable now.
I visited the area under it quite a while ago with a Conda, and clearly had not minmaxed it enough, as even with the few nearby neutron stars, i just couldn't make any jump to it. That, or i tried doing it before FSD boosters, i'm not sure.
It seems like a CMDR VoidKnight quietly figured out a trick to do it, because according to EDSM's logs, there is some way to get to and back from it, with a base jump range of about 78 lightyears.
That's a pretty tall order even for a Conda, but it is possible with serious engineering & an empty fuel tank. I do know there are a number of neutron stars right underneath the cluster, but i didn't see any inside it, so it seems like a bit of a mystery on how to get back..
Since i am busy with DW2 and can't go and check it out myself, i would really love for someone to get a nice outfit out there and check the area out.
It's a big, mysterious cluster of faraway class K stars that's been totally unreachable before now, and so i can't help but be incredibly curious at what is in there.. just do bring a really good jump range, the best you can get.
!!!
Please do also be aware that I can't guarantee that this is actually possible. It LOOKED like it was a legitimate jump, but because this CMDR has stayed completely private about this and not revealed any information or route past an EDSM sync, I can't verify it. This is something very new you're trying out, so be prepared for the possibility of having to turn back disappointed, or a self destruct.
Here is the EDSM twitter account stating how long the jump was: https://twitter.com/EDSM_NET/status/1095984235960328193
!!!
...so, if this star cluster is truly possible to reach now, then who knows what out there is now open to visit?
What next, a return from Ex Cancri?
