Why play online?

hrhr.."Hack" was solo... "nethack" was MP ;)
and this is VERY traditional :)

Edit: i have to correct myself. nethack used to be singleplayer...but i still have a game maual here (maybe from a later version) that describes it's multiplayer mode. And i remember to have played it in a local network.

You shared corpse files when playing on the university machines. It isn't multiplayer in the modern sense.

actually i remember "old" players camping the first levels and killing all "n00bs". and i never played on university machines...really ;)

At Nethack? What sorcery is this? I love Roguelike games, and true multiplayer seems impossible without messing with the core gameplay. Time only passes when you take an action

I played the original game on my c64. There was no "online" option on that time:) But i played it for years. This is the reason i am looking at this game. I could play this game solo if i wanted but i am gonna check it out of course. After grabbin some ships and credits, so i actually can experience without loosing to much.

Let me explain to avoid confusion with what i was trying to say: I am not going to play "online" in the learning progress. I am a slow learner. What i feel this game need is some kind of stuff for new players so that they can learn without having to see pvp players the very first moment.Thats all.

round based multiplayer is actually possible...well it was before RTS became flavour of the decade...

People play online because they like to interact with others, make friends, share moments, laugh... those human things.

Also some will do to make sure this won't happen:
As i see it, play it solo to you have the best ship in hand filled
with the best weapon. Grab yourself some moonth on the game and
get experience. Then you can go online.
If people see solo as a way to easily accumulate wealth, and online as the PvP mode, it'll just lead to something no one wants, and the slow death of the community.

You don't have to "win" to have fun. If that's the case to you, maybe you should stop playing any kind of game.

I'm a long-time nethack player... Multiplayer has never been possible. It's called "net-hack" because it was developed over the internet (by a distributed team of people), not because it had multiplayer functions.

As another poster said, you can only play on a network as a kind of "solo multiplayer", where you can bump into the corpse of a previous player, or at most you can "spectate" a game and send messages to them. No interaction while on the same level.

Variants of the game with multiplayer have been attempted, but none with the name "nethack" (nor with the same engine). "Interhack" came close.
I sure would love to play a multiplayer version if it ever gets done...

if you cannot cope with losing then you should not do anything competitive. but if you have your ego/pride in check then there are hundreds of reasons to play in open mode. if you cant come up with one stay in solo mode. i really doubt anyone cares what you do.

I find kinda amusing that some online players seem to feel personally insulted just because some others don't share their interest in multiplayer. No one forces you to play offline. Play multiplayer if you want to. But just the same let us play offline if we want to. ;)

I haven't seen a single post that inferred any level of perceived insult.

Are there particular posts that you're referring to?

Mine, I thought, was pretty positive and welcoming, and wasn't the only one.

It won't lead to the death of any community except maybe that 'community' whose only interest is racking up kills via cheap shots.

The All group is the PvP paradise whether you like it or not. It's already turning players to PvE groups/solo and ultimately the only mode likely to suffer any lingering demise will be the All group.

The really sad thing is that those players who delight in shooting the crap out of easy/weak targets will be ultimately responsible if the All group fails.

I've played... err, tested ED since PB release and I now play exclusively in group PvE mode. I have no intention of ever returning to the All group, not now and not with the release of the final game. It's not how I want to spend my time.

Actually the question you have to ask your self is, "Would you allow an uninvited guest to show up at a weekly poker game with your friends". Say a stranger barges in sits down, and continually releases horrible flatulence for all to smell, while being a total , (the Griefer, this sort of thing is fun for them).

David & Frontier is brilliant in this regard. The Solo and group play options will completely control this, 100 Percent, in time. Use the tools.

As far as I've been able to tell the Solo and All Play options are the exact same server. Other than when you go Solo you are placed in a Solo instance, tuning all the PC players out of your instance.

Play what ever mode appeals to you. The question isn't necessarily why would you want too? You have to ask your self if there is something you need for yourself in any of these modes. Find the one that works for you and play it, ignore anything else.

Also try not to pay to much attention to what some of these people have to say about your gaming experience. Let them play anyway they want, you do the same.

You can take this to heart, the reason were all here is to have fun, have it your way, have fun.

Once again, I'm not all that convinced Elite is "competetive". We are not in some zero-sum rat race against each other. Solo online or group is not a way to cheat. It will be the thing that saves this game for a large amount of people if the rules and moderation in Open are so lax that some people are allowed to get too annoying.

Each to their own for me.I understand those who want to play alone as Frontier was played no other way.
Personally I will only play online however, because I love the feeling of unease, and the feeling of "YES! I managed to escape" I have yet to experience the feeling of killing another player in anything other than single player games,so I won't trouble you with that.

As I am new here though, there is one question I have regarding the various modes, well several questions I suppose.

Can you for example, play an offline game, get a huge amount of money, and then buy whatever you choose in relative comfort....and then just move to the online game and use everything you have? or are they totally separate experiences (which I hope they are)

Of course even doing this would not be a massive help as the difference in taking on NPC's and Human players is a pretty vast one I would imagine.

Thanks everyone.

Welcome to the forum Ven,
you won't be able to transfer from 'Offline Solo' to any other game mode, as that will be a local savegame. But you could play 'Online Solo' and decide to play in 'Online All', I'm not entirely sure if you can transfer to 'Ironman' mode from the other online modes though. :)

Why should a new player play online?

Give me just ONE good reason.

As i see it, play it solo to you have the best ship in hand filled
with the best weapon. Grab yourself some moonth on the game and
get experience. Then you can go online.

T.K

If you're searching for reasons you probably already have your mind made up and it won't matter what answers we give you.

At the end of the day it's totally up to you. I can give you my reasons for only playing in open play but they are not going to be your reasons.

One of my main reasons is because my time is limited these days. I just don't get any satisfaction from single player games anymore. Anything I do when I play games on my PC has to be something that somehow affects another living person, whether in a good way, bad way, directly or inadvertently. I have to have some level of interaction now for it to be worth my time. Nowadays I only really play games like World of Tanks, War Thunder, Battlefield etc. etc. Just to give you an idea.
