ED Nominated for Evolving Game BAFTA

Indeed! I totally get that! But to appeal to the masses, there has to be constant fun and engagement. We/you/I could argue that Online mode is the 'engagement' factor, but where frontier fail, is in the acknowledging that many many players want interaction with others, but not at the cost of their expo data. trade goods. ships etc. There needs to be consentual PvP. Some players like to build armadas of ships. We need a lot more variations, in looks and themes. We need to have reasons to visit systems, and here, I mean, special modules, special ships, special somethings. Visiting to look at the 'pretty colours' gets old very fast.

Again, I re-iterate, this is my opinion, and I totally agree, not to everyone, or indeed, anyone else's liking :D
Good points. But how long would it take until people complain about 'being forced to fly to various systems to get special modules' and the grind that is involved? Don't get me wrong, I mostly agree with you, just pointing out that that constructive criticism has become somewhat difficult on this forum... ;)

However, in order to 'Appeal to the Masses', the control methods would have to be simplified, as would a lot of the game mechanics, which would probably destroy what we all find special about Elite in the first place.

I do have to give the nod to Fdev for not dumbing down Elite to freelancer levels

I got a refund on freelancer since it was marketed as a space sim and lacked joystick support. The dude in the shop agreed.

Picked it up for £1.99 in a bargain bin a few years later.

This game has evolved?

I mean, we've had some mechanics changes, and a few locations pop up outside of the bubble, but really what has evolved from a gameplay perspective?

I'm baffled by BAFTA

Maybe an award for the most egocentric "graphical text based menu game with a sim background" on a p2p Network, to acknowledge those who have ever read a web site posted in forums to figure out How Where What, downloaded a third party app, brought numerous gadgets to.... "play"

Its a niche genre, the masses would be happier never getting into it. Back in the early 90's the demographic was different most people had joysticks and were into star wars and we had the golden age of space games (or more of them anyway). But it just isn't that way anymore as gaming is available to more people (a good thing) more of whom fit the niche, but as a smaller percentage of all gamers overall as more people are gaming.

Pure speculation on my part.
I agree, its good that more people are playing, and with a bigger player base i think its good frontier is working on the new player experience.
The friends i introduced elite with kinda avoid the game due to its... Less than stellar first moments.

BAFTA-salt won't ever stop being funny :)

Well.. They weren't actually recognised by any distinguished institution now were they? Someone paid £76 to nominate.... Was it you?
Yes, FDev and Elite Dangerous were actually recognised by the distinguished institution of BAFTA - they were selected to be a finalist from all the nominations, as voted by the BAFTA members.

The BAFTA voting and selection process can be found on their website, including the application requirements for game companies.

And you know what, I hope Elite stay like that forever and that Frontier does not change the game for the mass market, never, never, never.

Powercreep for the masses. Gotta roll your dice all day for the juicy loot. Nerf player stuff overnight with engineered magic NPC, cos that what makes players come back and grind some more.

Ah, well if I was the designer :) There would be no 'forcing' about it. You'd have options; Buy a module, find a module. Each findable module would already have some form of engineering, maybe even a little better than a G5 grinded version. The whole idea, is to give the player a 'reason' to explore other systems.

I want Elite:Kerbal

fly me to the mun !

Yes, but since a lot of people follow a META approach there would always be a best / most desirable module and these people absolutely must have them which is why they feel forced to get them. Involving the grind of travelling there...

Stuart that's a whole lot of nothing. BAFTA awards are voted by the members who pay a sum of money to be a member of the committee. There is absolutely nothing 'distinguished' about it.

Regardless, my original claim was (opinionated) Elite is in no way was anything I would deem worthy of 'best evolved'... Best VR?, Best Graphics in a space SIm, absolutely all day every day. Again, my opinion, just as valid as yours :)

Hmm.. yes.. and no.. There's always a choice :) I'm more a 'enjoy the game' type than a min-maxer. I spent 10 years in Everquest, raiding with 1 of the top 2 guilds in the world, with a Tank ranked 24 world wide. It became a job, to be available for every raid, be the maxed I could be. Looking back, I enjoyed it, but it took 10 years of my life, and then they shut the servers.

I play Elder Scrolls Online a lot now. For sure, my characters are well-geared, but I spend most of my time exploring and just having fun with, or helping other players. The question I guess is; why do I explore? Well, it's anew place, plenty to see, and plenty to do. I may or may not get upgrades or achievements. In Elite, bar the pretty colours, everything is the same.

I get that, which is why I agreed with your proposal. I just pointed out that there will be complaining about it since some people will complain about everything. It's just a good example to put complaining into perspective ;)
