Roadmap leaked??

Really, wow I thought it was there from the start. I was, the memories must have gotten muddled :)
I remember vagually when they were added. It was a looooong time ago. That was when LOTRO was good.

EDIT: LOTRO housing came out 6 months after release.

I've got a fuzzy idea that base functionality could revolve around mining activities initially. IE with some form of low scale processing / refining possible via modules for the site, and further auto-mining devices perhaps to add an auto-farm aspect?

Add some form of limited 'station service' modules like rearming etc, fed by the auto-mining, and you've got an off-grid pirate base, or hidden Powerplay base of operations, or what have you.

Later base camps could form a safe haven from dangerous atmos conditions + animal risks, and allow explorers to survive while exploring promising systems top to toe.

Add in cosmetics & a hangar and you're getting somewhere a bit Elitey I reckon, and with a twinkle of gameplay potential

I can't see Frontier allowing base ownership or building. As well as putting more strain on the servers, there'd be a whole new level of people being upset. We have people not happy (in a few cases) of the first discovered system, and that works pretty well. Think I'm talking rubbish? A recent update that introduced the Codex, had people questioning if their first discovered tags were still there. People get very passionate and protective of that. Now imagine this happening with base building. All I see is people moaning about not being able to build where they wanted to, or being griefed, or their bases being attacked or destroyed.

I have at times questioned Frontier's decisions, but even they can't be so stupid as to open themselves up to a new area of complaints.

in my fantasy elite which will probably never exist outside of my head.... stuff like base building could potentially be totally separate to the BGS and indeed if it were technically not possible to support it happening on a server based system it could just be in a small PG, the bases saved locally on anyone in your PGs save (which would mean some short pause as the game syncs as someone enters your group i presume.

the only thing which would need to be stored server side would be an X marks the spot so the server knows there is a base of some description within a few square KM of the region and thus not allow another base to be built on top (just incase 2 friends built a base on the same spot then joined a PG together)

FD have already admitted they would like PP to be open only, and i am ok with that, so base building could be solo and very number limited PG only (if it was a matter of that or not doing it at all)

out of curiosity how does NMS manage it?

Ummm .... I think that's a topic for a whole other thread ... maybe? ... in Off Topic?

It is off topic, but that's how things tend to go around here - and it means too many threads get derailed.

actually hate obsidian ant videos. How can a 2 minute conversation be stretched over 10 minutes of 80% waffling.

That's cool. I hate ignorant forum comments. ;)

I disagree! I find Obsidian Ant easy listening and informative. He and Vindi Jones are the two best streamers/youtubers I've watched in the ED community. Ant has a lot of good current views and news and Vindi Jones did some great instruction videos. Ant has a calming tone and his discussion and opinions on videos are often fair and well thought out.

1 point to Mr Ant keep up the good content can see you're a passionate fan.

Come on RN - we've both been on this forum long enough to know that that's not how we do things around here!! Rampant speculation is de rigueur!

And on that subject - with all the creature animations FDev have been doing from their other games, I'll be intrigued to see what arrives for ED.

🤓

Well, if they have a Planet P Zoo then they can mo-cap Thargoids....

One of the interesting thing is their new 'retargeting' system, which automates a lot of the animation work...

I'd guess (based on very little knowledge!) that a base could be stored in much less data, and need to be updated much less often, than all the ships and projectiles in a space battle.

Yup. It would be coordinates and a numerical value which indicates how the base is layed out. The rest would be on your own computers.

There are so many issues with bases in this game though.
First there's instancing... Second, there's base attacks, which leads to a whole load of other things. How does one defend a base when not online? Or if it can't be attacked, we'll end up with bases on top of each other... any planetoid in the bubble will have streets... or if they need to be outside the bubble, for 100LY in every direction planets will be covered.
If I wanted Eve online, I'd have kept playing that!

Until you want to change something, this being an online-game, the server would have to check for "legal" changes. I think these would only happen during the weekly downtime (at least at that point, nobody could get synchronisation issues).

A flying base (carrier) is more appropriate for this game.
Or, if people want to settle, they could retire to their "planetary shards", unable to influence the game. No, not even as (less competent) engineers

People keep talking about how to handle base attacks/defense but why is it necessary? Bases don't have to be destructible. Bases in the game are already indestructible, so it's not some new precedent or anything. You can shoot all the dumbfire missiles you want at a base right now and won't even bend a light pole.

Not exactly 100% of the game absolutely must be about combat or be subject to combat or whatever.

A huge bobblehead rack would be very cool, where you can display many/all of the ones you've bought and earned.

That's more likely in a sensible system yes, but remember who we're dealing with. It'll all be about creating dinowaur farms with giant coasters running through them to drive your SRV along. They'll need to be visitable so you can check out other people's SRV Coasters and fight off dinos with the turret guns.

Actually, that sounds rather fun...
