Don't trust the advanced docking computer.

I was delivering some cargo in my Imperial Cutter to the Stargazer in the Pleione system. I requested docking and throttled down to zero when I was within 7.5km. My Cutter got stuck in the letter box and had to manually take over. There was no other ships coming or going at the time.

This can happen sometimes. I have always used a DC, but there are reasons to why, especially in a big wide ship like Cutter, T9, T10 and Beluga, you simply can't leave for toilet until it at least has gone through the toastrack. Small and Medium ships seem to be more reliable, and also Corvette and Conda, since they are more long than wide.

Take it to an port in an asteroid field, set and forget.

LOL... I tried the new player content on one of my alts that I reseted, and the ADC managed to boost right into an asteroid at one of those asteroid looking starports. And that was in a Sidewinder. :D

I tried the advanced docking computer yesterday for the first time. Just after auto launch I was placed in a queue for leaving the station. So I waited, you know, for fun. And then waited some more, out of interest. Then lost patience and took control myself. Looked like everyone else was in a queue also.
Worth a go I guess though.

I came back to a ship nearly 100 km away due to pathing issues with a DC in an asteroid field and an extended bio break, wasn't even thinking of it ramming an asteroid, but that's nice too!

I've used a DC in EVERY ship I've purchased & I've played since day 1.

I have never ever let it autodock unless I've got one hand on my joystick & the other on the speed button key on my laptop......first sign of a malfunction, I jump in!!

Yes i use docking only for the last few yards. Just last night my conda got stuck trying to auto dock on a surface base! It got stuck backing towards the pad which was in a valley. Ship got stuck on a structure!

You just can't trust those darned machines ;)

I was pondering this the other day: If the DC makes you wait long enough I wonder if the station will open fire on you for not leaving in time?

I trust the ADC to remain in it's box, on the shelf, in the Equipping screen, where I left it.

I used to have a DC fitted to my Cutter for CGs but I only ever throttled-back and let the DC land my ship after I'd flown it through the mailslot.
Even then (I swear this is true), it once managed to overshoot the pad, turn the ship through a complete 180 and try and land it facing the wrong way on the pad.

It will kill you in the asteroid bases like Robardin. Hits everything there on auto-launch 🤬

Tested it out at the Omega mining Base, didn't see any issues on launch & docking with a T-10. It is the same old rule, always monitor and be ready to take over manually.

My only issue with the ADC is that they have inhibited lowering the landing gear manually whilst the automation is functioning. The standard DC behaved much smoother with the gear down (roll/pitch authority was reduced, boost was inhibited)

If Sarah is reading, please consider adding an option to disable boost (or at least allow us to lower the gear early to keep things smooth) Also a keybinding to engage Supercruise assist would be a nice QoL in the future.

@ Stealthie, flown thousands of FA-OFF docks in the Cutter, thousands of Automated docks too. Can honestly say have never had an incident, not yet tested the ADC on the Cutter. The Anaconda would scrape the top of the Bridge on the access corridor under automation, although that was a good few years ago. Haven't flown the conda in while

Edit - I wonder if you guys are running Class A G5 DDT on your Cargo Cutters, I stick to good old D rated, reinforced, runs cool and can take a beating.

And people are worried about bots taking over. Perhaps the new docking computers are Frontier's way to stopping the bots 😝
