Re: Engineers

Can someone please explain in as simple terms as possible how to use engineers and what benefits I can get. I don't want to trawl the net looking for answers I want to ask directly here.

Looking forward to a fresh perspective

You start with one engineer already unlocked (Tod The Blaster)
Engineers modify certain parts/modules/weapons to enhance a ships capabilities (Offence and Defence)
You unlock other engineers by performing 'tasks'.
Engineer upgrades require materials and data you collect from signal sources or missions.

In a nutshell, you go insane.

Basically every aspect of your ship can be improved, in some cases quite significantly.

They are the aftermarket tuners of the Elite world.

Generally people increase their jump range first.

You'll get invites from engineers and they will require something from you before they'll even begin to engineer anything. It's usually something grindy, so find out what that is before you go visit them. It should tell you on the ship's panel under Engineers what you're lacking for that engineer unlock. Come here for hard to find/retrieve items. The "teabaggers" live to drop these so you don't have to make repetitive trips when you're only allowed to buy 2 or so at a time and need 25 of them. Then, before you visit said engineer, have the materials you need to at least get some mid level engineering done. Start with Felicity Farseer and increase your jump range. This will help you with the rest of your progress with other engineers. Arsenic is your friend as are datamined wake exceptions. You can trade down for Arsenic if you have some high grade elements, but DWEs require you scan wakes at stations. Fun eh? Nothing like running around like an idiot outside of a busy port scanning wakes. You can trade for DWEs as well but the trade rate is ludicrous to say the least since it's a grade 5 (I think) level.

I found the doc Ryan put together very helpful re engineers and what mods are good.

I got it. Thanks for the replies. So basically I'm captain kirk asking Scotty for more power. Awesome. The one thing my python is lacking is jump range. 12 max which sucks. My explorer did 36. I'm looking forward to getting this underway.

Check the engineers tab in your right UI panel.
That will tell you where you stand with the various engineers and what you need to do next.

In game instructions are sparse aside from that, so don't hesitate to ask for direction.

My multipurpose Python can jump about 45ly i think, but im also using the Guardian Hybrid technology (Range extender)

The python is also a but sluggish in maneuverability, it can benefit from Engine tuning.

I will do. Hoping to get some comp time tonight. Butt numbness and pins and needles sitting in my supposed to be awesome £30 chair from argos doesn't make for a good gaming experience so going to try a pillow. I'd like to join a Squadron but don't have any friends in game. I see lots of players when I drop out of super cruise but everyone seems way to busy to stop admire the View and chat in game. Have tried asking for help in game but only one person responded in 10 hours and they just repeated the same words over and over and over.

they upgrade your ship to a reasonable level,

in a nut shell -->

You need to unlock the engineers with materials often only available at 4 a time requiring 10-20 round trips or sitting watching netflix for the quota to refill, or by selling data, travelling distances gaining combat rank etc, stations / engineers bases are often 6kls+ away from the star for extra fun!!!!! YAY

then when they're unlocked you need to find hens teeth, eye of newt serum and other obscure unobtainable RNG stuff or trade it all as a soul destroying rate to upgrade your stuff, especially grade 5 clicking many times sapping away your materials you spent hours /days gathering.

if you're into PVP you better rinse and repeat the engineering cycle every patch as the meta changes.

then after 30 hours of playing and upgrading your ship you can actually do the thing you came onto ED to do.

That's not unusual. There ARE helpful people out there in the game, but the galaxy is so huge you could go a long time without seeing one.

There are a ton of resources for this game online, so most people probably don't understand why you don't just use those resources. Asking someone to spend their time to type out answers to questions that have already been answered and are available with an easy google search, because you aren't willing to spend your time on it, is a big ask; it shouldn't surprise you that a lot of total strangers aren't willing to do that for you.

The community here has some very helpful people so you will find a lot more success asking questions here. My biggest problem when I was brand new is that a ton of the "online resources" went right over my head. They seemed to assume at least some understanding of game concepts that I didn't have. This community helped a lot in getting through that phase (and still is...based on my almost daily question... lol)

Sounds like some squats might be in order.

;)

Lots of helpful folks around here.
Ftr I often don't even see comms when I'm in game until it's too late.

Exactly. Thank you. I've watched videos and read many things that don't make sense or are far too advanced and the basic learning of a skill seems to be lost or guarded as a secret kind of thing. I will always ask for help rather than go looking for it unless after an initial Google search I get a good result which is not very often.

Try YouTube commander exigeous. He has several bids with tips on farming materials and engineering. He is fast so expect to pause and rewind to catch it all.

I advise noobs to start with Felicity in Deciat. You can achieve a lot of engineering benefits with her. I use Inara.cz for engineering guidance.
