1: How will you ever know the joy of sending 95% of your projectiles into the never ending blackness of space?
I tried to PvP once in a FDS dropship with 5 fixed Multis after seeing Rinzler gracefully killing a Hydra in one.
I know exactly the feeling of sending 95% of my projectiles into the never ending blackness of space.
And ate a rebuy. Joy.

I'm using fixed weapons only and FA Off only at the moment.
I'm also incapable of killing anything, really.

I'm nursing the fantasy that I could get good enough under those conditions to be an awesome pilot; however, the more realistic fallback plan is that the practice with fixed/FA Off would actually make me quite a bit more effective with gimbled/FA On should I decide to drop back to that.

I've already seen this when comparing to my buddy, who two months in is still on edge about landing in a station with FA On, whereas for me, landing with FA On is completely effortless, thanks to the practice with FA Off.

If any of that makes sense.
Point is, I'll probably be joining you in gimbled land one day.
I'm not much of a twitch monkey.

Keep training, it will pay off. When I got a new Joystick because the old one broke I was tempted to switch to Kb/m because it is THAT much easier then hotas to fly FAoff. But in the end I chose immersion, I simply like flying with a hotas more then being competitive with PvP.
And I'm not flying gimballed only, I use rails or a Phasing Conda with full fixed pulses too. But FdL is just too fast turning for me to hit anything with fixed Multis compared to gimballed.

Gimbal multis are not so bad, sure you lose the module targetting when chaffed but you can keep firing on target and do not have to move around so much with that wide angle fire.

I've gotten to the point where I really don't like the feel of FA ON anymore.
Makes me feel like I'm 4 yrs old being pulled in a wagon instead of skiing down the side of an icy slope.

I did manage to hit an NPC ship last night 4 times in a row with rail guns.
It was an Anaconda that was disabled. :D

^--- The sad part is, I actually missed a few times. That was with the ship taking up 50% of my screen real estate.

I'm practicing with gitting gud with fixed weapons and FA-off lately too. Mainly the former. The latter I have on a toggle and tend to turn back on when I want to stabilise my rotation (god I wish joysticks had a setting like relative-mouse so I didn't have to push my stick the other way to stop spinning).
I'm tending to go for fixed hitscan and gimballed projectiles since gimbals are better at leading a subtarget than I am. My pure-fixed ship is my new vulture. And that's frags, which will be sending 95% of their projectiles into the void at anything other than point-blank range anyway so the only reason to gimbal those is if you're flying something massive.

... now I'm tempted to run a gimballed all-frag T10 and see how quickly I can delete someone.

I know you're not a noob, but I found these videos to be helpful:

Sometimes I'll spend an hour just trying to move my ship about the outside of a station.
It helps gauge progress - the little victories matter.

The tragedy is that not only is relative mouse FA off much easier than joystick, but aiming rails with a mouse is also vastly, vastly easier....almost criminally so. I recently switched to mouse and throttle because I realized that to be even viable in PvP one has to reliably be able to shut down SCBs and that means rails. I love multicannons, I must have at least 15 grade 5 engineered multis of all types and sizes. But when I PvP with them, I simply run out of ammo because of overwhelming shield strength. And I am not trigger happy; I also refuse to synthesize. At first, I thought I would lose immersion as well when giving up the joystick; however, my awareness is so concentrated on the position and attitude of my target, that type of control doesn't matter any more. In addition, because my hands are very small, the mouse is much easier to manipulate. So I am of the opinion that control setup is a means and not an end. YMMV :)

So many cool weapons.....so many lovely ships..... that are horribly imbalanced. I love, love flying against humans, but because of the current mechanics, in order to PvP we are all forced to use FDLs and plasma and rails. Please, FDev, reconsider balancing the combat game mechanics.

Story of my PvP life * sigh *

I'm a gimbal scrub, sue me.
LOL come on, have you no shame; Wiktionary - derived from whatever Michael Mouse dictionary - doesn't count! It's OED or no party! Only slack-jawed yokels from the middle bit of the US would use such a barstewardised version - totally out of context too, although the root is probably shared. Please don't ever question me again! :p

Gimbal scrubs are fine...just don't advertise!

EDIT: Talking of slack-jawed yokels from the middle bit...hello Jason.

Even most USians would use MW, to be fair, which while no OED, is ok for a quick lookup if nothing else is available.

Also, OED sucks.

Speaking of "slack jawed yokelism" your average post is so incoherent and poorly constructed that I can't really tell what you're talking about most of the time:)
