Would like C3 and C4 Railguns.

Would you also like to be at the receiving end of an NPC ship with full setup of C3 and C4 railguns? Which doesn't care for heat, as NPCs are disposable and boiling up internal modules doesn't matter?

The topic keeps coming up. But FD years ago already stated that they were investigating the idea. But found no way to properly balance them.

Apparently there's no middle ground between them feeling too weak for a weapon of their size (when used by players) and them being utterly devastating and resulting in one-shot kills. I guess it's along the line of some old first person shooters. People loved using sniper rifles which can one-shot enemies. They also accepted the weapon in the hands of other players. But when NPCs got the same weapons, they were seen as unbalanced and unfair.

They can't even balance the weapons they got now! Engineers broke everything, and they pretty much stopped adding weapons above size 2.

So I always found their stance on this mildly laughable.

The argument seems to bounce between "They will be too weak for their size" and "They will be overpowered".... which means you pick a number between those extremes. ¯\(ツ)

And of course there are other options beyond just damage and heat. Size 3 and 4 could be gimballed or turreted (with jitter), or have more ammo but the same damage profile.

C3 maybe ... I think C4 would be excessive!

Kinda like the idea that they have more ammo rather than do more damage (like missiles) as an alternative approach that would still be useful.

Or maybe a C3 is THREE C1 rails configured for sequential fire - thus increasing your fire rate (and ammo) for maybe a small damage penalty on each individual shot? Likewise a C4 would be TWO C2s with sequential fire - so not quite as fast firing as the C3 but each shot would do more damage.

I heard they trialed the Class 4 railguns but had to scrap production because they shot right through a Captial Ship, cleaving it in two, then carried on forth until it burst the balloon of a kid eating icecream, causing the child to cry. The parents were mortified and then sued the Federation, and now the rest is history.

Class 3 Railguns are more than reasonable, however. They only caused a bowel movement in the host Commander's spacesuit. Nothing that the 3 seashells can't fix.

I think skipping C3 and just going with a C4 that has a long spool up and recharge.

Balance would be long spool up, large heat, long reload heavy cap drain.

Basically a super gun, but you maybe get one or two shots per engagement. Hard to land, but if they do, lights out.

It would be cool to have a weapon that uses so much power that it causes a temporary outage with each shot, similar to the Excalibur's main gun. Firing the C4 rail gun results in same effect as rebooting your ship's computer :D
If our ships shutdown, like in Mechwarrior to protect from heat, it'd be very interested!
Obviously, like in Mechwarrior, you can override it, bit keep firing and...

I tried 7 rails on my Corvette, it was, interesting.💥🔥.
I'm experimenting with an all-rail PVE anaconda right now. It's a fun experiment, but so far I've spent most of my time finding the mats for the engineering required to keep the temps down. All the rails are nearly maxed out at g5 sturdy, which is helping with the heat a bit. Can still only get one shot off every 2 seconds or so, otherwise the heat damage racks up quickly!
