Info this month

While I admit that new information has been almost non existent for a while now and hype appears to have dropped as these forums are barely seeing activity in comparison to a while back, I can't help but feel a lot of people are going in a little harsh on frontier about the beta.
Personally I don't remember seeing any mention of a summer release and I admit I may be wrong but as far as I'm aware it's only ever said "exclusive beta access" which we should all be grateful for because before announcing this, frontier were under no obligation to give us beta access whatsoever. So even if the beta isn't available until the day before release, you're still getting what you've paid for, albeit a little disappointing, it still is early access. Yes, they should announce when the beta is out, so people can judge whether or not its worth paying extra for, but for those who have already paid, you only have yourselves to blame. Again, this is going off the premise that they never mentioned "summer" which I don't believe they actually ever did. IF they did then I'll gladly hold my hands up and admit my argument is mostly invalid but until then, the beta comes when the beta comes, let's just be grateful we'll get to play the game early, whenever that may be.

How often do/did you state a paper would be delivered at a certain date and you postphoned it without telling your teacher at a later date? Maybe they got bigger ideas or had some troubles, we dont know. Just be patient, its a virtue ;)

I also believe that Frontier is trying to polish all those details that they have seen in our comments, maybe they make arrangements or details that they had not planned, but that they considered appropriate thanks to our suggestions, so it does not bother me, I guess we are all anxious to Having the game soon on our pc, but maybe the wait will be worth it. Maybe the queues improve, they edit the time, maybe the stages of growth, we don't know, but I hope, and I'm hopeful that the game will exceed, or at least reach my expectations, like that of everyone who is waiting for the game. Greetings.

I still stand by my point and feel I am yet to be proven wrong, at no point have Frontier said the beta is coming in summer. The above video is from the PC Gaming Show by PC Gamer and it is PC Gamer that have put the overlay over the video stating the beta will be out in summer, while this is most likely because Frontier have told PC Gamer that the beta will be out in summer, its not concrete enough to base any argument off

Mistaking one's own wishes with developer's promises is a quite common thing among Frontier fanbase, no matter the game, apparently.

I think it's fine to have dreams, but it's not necessary to throw blame, accusations and other willy wally around. :)

It will be as it always has been. The beta will come out when it's ready, announced probably a week or two ahead. Elite players learned to wait for the good stuff. Patience, young padawans.

I have to say I'm very dissatisfied with this way of communication too.
  1. Don't announce and immediately sell a deluxe edition that includes access to a beta and then be quiet about the date of said beta for two months. That's just selling an empty promise really, since a lot of people bought the deluxe edition mostly for the beta access, while expecting said beta to be in July/August.
  2. Don't say summer if you don't mean July/August as most people will assume. I know September technically still counts, but at least say late summer then for more clarity.
  3. If it wasn't Frontier who said summer, at least be clear about it and immediately say that's false information.
  4. If they did say summer but a delay was caused, at least communicate it.
  5. Just.....communicate. Being quiet about this is just the worst thing they can do, since I really just don't see any reason for hiding the date except for really scummy ones.
And I really hope Frontier isn't scummy like that, but it does make it seem like they're hiding the date on purpose because it's way later than people expect. Saying (or not denying) summer and counting on people to think it's July/August and buying the deluxe edition already. And counting on people not canceling it when they find out the beta isn't in July/August at all, cause you've already bought it anyway, and canceling it and buying the regular version is more effort than it's worth for a lot of people. Again, I really do hope this is not the actual case, but it does look like that and that's bad enough for your reputation. Communicating is not hard, please just say something to the people who trusted in you and bought the more expensive version of your game beforehand, they deserve to know.

If the beta doesn't come out until late September I'm probably canceling my deluxe edition. I'm on holiday for half of October so it would hardly be worth it for me then since the actual game is released early November already. I was really looking forward to playing it earlier and also to be able to help make the game better before the actual release, was even planning to take a few days off from work for it. But that's only possible if I know the date way ahead and that doesn't seem to be happening.

Yes, I know it's my own fault for buying the deluxe edition without knowing all the information, but I trusted Frontier to give out the information shortly after that. It seems that trust was misplaced and I'm really disappointed about that. And I know there's more than the beta in the deluxe edition, but the rest isn't worth that price for me.

Great post, well put. I couldn't agree more.

And I wish people would stop assuming that me made up the summer thing. Next time I'm taking screenshots. Go on YouTube, people, see the live reactions from E3. As far as I know they couldn't delete the text in the video there that said "beta access in summer".

Frontier knows about what was written during E3. If it was not official, good communication would have been to address it and correct it. They did not. If the beta doesn't come out in summer, they still benefit from the hype. Plus, the info was on steam as well and were quoted by many famous YouTubers. Addressing it would have been the least they could do, if it was false info.

I agree! It clearly says Summer Beta in the E3 video. If they weren't going to give us a Summer Beta and the video was wrong. They should of told us immediately instead of keeping quiet and giving us false expectations.

Look, I'm not really complaining about not getting the beta early. I do have patience for that and I do assume the game just isn't ready for it yet and they don't know when it is. And that's fine. Me assuming the worst scummy reasons earlier is mostly because I work for a company that does marketing courses and I know all the dirty tricks marketing departments can pull, so it's the first thing that comes to my mind. And it was mostly an example to show why being quiet is the worst thing you can do; people will start assuming their own reasons.

All I'm complaining about is the lack of communication. A simple 'the summer beta info is false, it will be later' or 'sorry, the beta has been delayed' or 'it's not gonna be July/August' is literally all people are asking for here, not even an exact date. All we've been told, multiple times, is 'there will be more info soon' which sorta reinforced the idea it would really be soon and therefore still in summer. By not saying the summer info is false, expectations were set and are now not being met, making people feel tricked. And I do think people have the right to complain about that.

The beta being out later than summer is fine. Giving us (or not denying the) expectations is what's the problem here.

Frontier should take as much time for the beta as they need. I don't want to play an alpha version. If it takes more time than expected, frontier can also change the release date of the game. But please frontier, talk openly about it!

The worst thing I ever saw was the communication about the game Guild 3 (from another developer). This game was announced 3 years too early and many expectations were raised. What came was a completely destroyed early access from Guild 3. I am really looking forward to planet zoo, as much as I was looking forward to Guild 3. I hope the best.

I don't want any hate, i want certainty because I love planet zoo so much

Yep, I agree with everyone on this: If the beta isn't ready for relase, that's totally fine. I don't want them to rush and if it is nessecary, I would also be open for the game to be delayed. But communication is the key and the silence now is doing a lot of damage marketing wise. More than an open "sorry, we thought we'd be ready by summer but aren't" would.

I think it was said info will come at Gamescon ‘19? Isn’t that enough? If Beta will be launched then its summer right?

Gamescom is at the end of August. With 'summer beta' you are creating hype for July/August cause that is what summer is for most people. That is obviously not happening anymore so people feel a bit tricked. September is technically still summer but come on, if you say 'summer', you know most people will assume July/August. Maybe a delay was caused, that is fine of course, but there's been no communication about that so now it just feels like false hype was created. If the beta was planned in September from the start, it would've been better to call it 'late summer' or 'the end of summer'. Or maybe just don't say summer at all, just say a beta is coming some months before the game comes out, that way no false expectations are created at all.

To be extra clear: I don't have a problem with the beta info being at Gamescom and I have no problem with the beta being released in September or later. That is all fine by me. The only thing I have a problem with is the false expectations that were created and that there has been zero communication to set that right. And again, if it wasn't Frontier that promised a summer beta, then it would've been nice to communicate that too.

Also I don't hate the developers for this or something, I do love this game, I of course will still play it and it's awesome they respond to things on this forum so they do get bonus points for communication in that regard. I'm just disappointed is all and I'm voicing that disappointment in the hope that they learn from this and are clearer in their communication about these sort of things in the future to avoid disappointed fans.

You know that summer ends at 23 of september right? plenty of time yet for the beta to be out this summer.
I personally think it will be out early september (I even said this right after they announce the summer date) I don't get why people would think beta would come in june or july, that has always been unrealistic to me and tbh.. I want them to take the time they can and give us a good product.. I can wait.

I think some of the replies here from people who've been with us for a while have been spot on. We don't tend to announce things until they are ready to be announced, and we certainly don't mean to create "false expectations" by how we communicate. I would point out that since E3 there have been many forums posts or new reveals (Developer Journals, Young Mbazo feature, animal reveals), as well as our statement that you will get more Beta information at Gamescom - which runs from August 19 until August 24. That should answer all of your questions! You also have the team here on the forums who've been trying to answer as many questions as possible.

The reasoning behind our communication (and why July might feel "quieter" - even though for us it's not!) is because of development times and preparation for the next big thing. Our teams are working incredibly hard to sort out all the activities we have going on in August. To give you some insight: we've got game builds, we've got press interviews, we've got livestreams, we've got a public booth on the show floor, we've got a community event, and then some! Not to mention we are also getting the Beta ready AND are shipping the game in November. This means there's a lot of activity going on behind the scenes which sometimes prevents us from showing you even more, because it either won't be finished, or we simply won't have the availability to do so. Gamescom is a massive, multi-team task that requires a lot of bandwidth, but it'll also be very worth it.

Now, I do completely understand that some people are feeling frustrated about the word "summer"; all I can say is that it's only 19 days until Gamescom, and you'll find out everything there. In the meantime we still have loads of awesome things planned to get you through the waiting days - and if there's anything we can help you with, just let us know.

That's a good answer to wait 20 days to gamescom now, I think it will be amazing :)
