Reduce the grind

How about this - why don't they just remove all the grind? - You just pick your ship from a chart, equip it as you see fit and it's all FREE!

Problem is. Everyone would be flying a-rated anacondas. So that would be very boring. And there would be no challenge.

Hey. If you dislike working for things that much, why not just watch a youtube video of someone flying a Anaconda? - no effort at all required there.

A "cartoony space game" which Obsidian Ant himself praised highly for "respecting the player's time".

Oh, Ant himself. Uh-huh.

From our own NMS thread:

Man, sometimes this game can be extremely trolly. I find this crashed pod that I can open, if only I had some some Pugneum material. That Pugneum material is only obtained from sentinels. Must be something worthwhile then I reckon? As it turns out finding sentinels in my system is tough because it is mostly low security. Have to waste tons of launch and pulse fuel to get to the right place, then die a few times in combat, then spend more fuel to get back (oh dont forget the materials I needed to make the beacon so I could get back). Finally I can open the darn crashed pod, arf arf. The reward? A ridicule amount of nanites.

Probably all part of the learning curve but man. Sean, let me tell you about opportunity cost, reward and grind.

I'll tell you what's not imaginary, while everyone is going on about how great NMS' new update is - while it may have FINALLY allowed me to play the game again, after the visions update caused it to crash the moment I tried to load a save or start a game, back in November, one thing I don't appreciate about this patch is how IT ADDED THE ELEPHANT BUTT LEATHER FINISH TO EVERY DAMN TEXTURE INSIDE MY CAPITAL SHIP.
Congratulations Frontier, your PS4 client was such an inspiration to Hello Games that they decided they absolutely needed to have those horrendous moire effect shadows in their game, too.
Welcome to my Squadron :D

NMS is nothing like Elite its a cartoony space game not a simulator. They both have their own strengths but are totally different and both have a different place in the game genre. NMS is minecraft in space which isnt a bad thing if you like that kind of game. I prefer Elite personally. Im in my 40s which might have something to do with it :) NMS is the sort of game my daughter would play like roblox or ARC survival.

Elite isn't a simulator. You fly around space in the 34th century shooting lazers at aliens. It's kind of embarrassing to excuse the boredom element of ED with that argument when it quite clearly doesn't simulate anything.

And NMS is quite a lot like ED. That's another daft argument. Hence why they are continually discussed as substitutes.

NMS is not like Elite in any way.

Elite is a simulation for you playing the space ship commander. You actually have to fly the ship, not press L. So it is a simulator, for a far future space ship. Your actually flying the thing.

Which is exactly what I like, along with many others. Otherwise I would be playing something else.

Yeah farming Dav's hope/HGE is such a deep and meaningful gameplay and relogging such a challenge...

Sorry but no. Grind is shorthand for "the need to repeat time and again a gameplay loop (often not particularly rewarding in itself) in order to progress in game, or to obtain progress-making items, so that new gameplay loops might become available".

There are many such loops in Elite that are textbook grind. Shooting Cacodemons in Doom is not a grind, it's core gameplay (because it's fun in and of itself) and level progression is simply a way to keep this core mechanics fresh and engaging.

I find fuel scooping to be intrinsically rewarding. Maybe Elite isn't the game for you.

I think you're confusing engaging gameplay with grind.
If that's the case it means that in ED there's no gameplay at all.

To be able to engage players in the game's hotspots so that I stand a chance! Actually, scratch that...so that my ship lasts longer a minute!

& I'm not talking about running away. Yeah, I can escape just fine thanks, but imnvho that is completely against the spirit of learning, fun & interaction in a shooty spaceships game!

Hence "catch-up"...geddit now?!
Okay so you have to G5 everything on your ship. Yep that will be a grind if u want to do it fast. Sorta like trying to bash the square peg into the round hole. I've been playing ED for a few months now, taking a very relaxed approach to engineering. Almost 100% G5 in some of my ships, but because I'm taking my time and just enjoying all of the aspects of ED, it will take a while before I'm ready for PvP. Which suits me fine, I like exploring, running missions, mining, bounty hunting etc. I don't want to shoot other players. Yet. But I guess when I have played for a while longer, I will have some G5 God ships and I will need to challenge myself by taking on someone else's G5 God ship. I think that is just the path that will naturally develop for me.

Looking @ the comments in this thread, and previous similar threads it becomes obvious that Frontier introduced engineers to encourage players to do a wide range of activities in the game: exploring, trading, bounty hunting, checking out USS's etc. Whether they realised that PvP players were not interested in anything other than PvP and would then struggle with engineering is a good question. But that is the way it has turned out. If PvP is all you like to do, are there not other games that are more PvP orientated?

I too enjoy flight simulators. But the difference to Elite is that you make your own game in them. I’ve flown probably in the thousands of hours of flight sims starting from SubLogic Flight Simulator on the Apple IIe almost 40 years ago. And it never felt like a grind.

Yup, SubLogic Flight Simulator on the Apple IIe. Never could land in that one, even though I had no problems landing my sailplane. Wasn't until Flight Simulator 98 that the graphics were finally giving me the proper visual clues.

sure, you could play Elite the same way but then there would be a huge amount of gameplay just locked out of your reach. And you’d be a sitting duck in any PvP encounter.

Not locked out of gameplay at all. That's stuff I'm not interested in doing. I see it as gameplay that's not being forced on me. Big sandbox and all that.

As to PvP, like I said, I fly in solo. Not an issue.

big problem with the grind in Elite, in my opinion, is that it’s effectively mandatory.

I'll not argue as you have determined it's necessary for your style of play.

Note that e.g. flying to Beagle Point isn’t grinding. It’s something you chose yourself. It’s similar to flying around the world in a Cessna 172 in a traditional flight sim. Takes a long time, requires a lot of patience, but you chose to do it yourself. Compare that the engineering in Elite, as an example, and it’s totally different. Elite basically says you have to engineer or you won’t be able to really fight Thargoids or do PvP. And to engineer you have to drive around on moons for hours shooting rocks.

Agree with the flying to Beagle Point. As to Thargoids and PvP, not something I do. Like I said above, our play styles differ so you and I play in different parts of the sandbox.

I have unlocked Farseer to level 5. Had to take a road trip to buy her meta alloy tribute, but that paid for itself with the exploration data. The long range frame shift is very useful, but not mandatory.

No need to grind for engineering materials either, I pick them up as I play the game. Scanning wakes in a souped up iEagle is a hoot. I'll drop in on USS threat 0 when I only have an hour or so for gaming and want a little diversion. I get a lot of stuff just mining.

Agree on the economy side of things for trading!
I'd also like to be able to own ore than one ship at a time.
I wonder if you know: are there more than 5 ships in the game?
Yep, a hangar would be nice.

There are 9 ships in game atm. You need to buy and build your own base to unlock the other 4 ships.
One ship is actually called the Beluga.
