Finally put together a VR capable setup (for < $900)

Crap - does ED not run well with the "s"? The oculus site said 970 would run it.?!
The Rift S works fine. It runs. With minimal settings. I got a 1660ti (the one that fried itself and is being replaced) that does much better. Can run high/medium settings with that. Though... playing with low/off this past week I'm impressed with how used to it I got, and maybe I'll try leaving the special effects off to see if 1660ti can run some supersample.

Anyway. I'm impressed the 1050ti can run it without being a slideshow!

Had someone tell me if you unplug your monitor you get better performance. Dont know for sure though, dont have VR. But i guess its worth a try

Wait a minute... you fly a Beluga, right?
...and you don't have VR....
Man, are you missing some great stuff!

Re: Unplugging monitors - there was an issue early in the Rift S driver development where 'issues' occured if you had a second monitor attached, but I think it was resolved (have to say think as I only have room for one 32" monitor on my desk...)

After hearing this stuff i might grab one of those samsung ones for christmas

Rift S is on my wishlist for Black Friday. I'm just not fully convinced that I'll use VR that much... I was a bit underwhelmed by PSVR, though I suppose that's like comparing a Ford Aspire to a Ford Mustang. Thoughts?

Psvr if memory serves, only had direction tracking, but not positional, right? So thats .....totally not vr, at, all. Not to mention the quality being low.
Anyway, I can’t play flat anymore. It’s amazing.
As for unplugging the monitor, never heard of that, but you can set you monitor view to be quite small. Should be a negligible impact, if any.

PSVR was/is excellent 1st generation hardware on a platform that it pushed beyond the pale...
PCVR + Rift S, in comparison would be going from 640x480 to 1080p... But be aware of laptop limitations - you will need a Display Port / Mini DP on your laptop that is connected directly to the GPU chipset, not the Intel graphics...

There are also some very good games in VR other than ED...

Yes, it will work - a bit like @Bloodsign - you may have to turn things down a little, but at least the Rift S display running at 80Hz 'gives back' some performance headroom over the Rift etc. so you should just jump in and play, enjoy! Going from the Rift to Rift S, for me, was a great move!
I have a standard Rift, would you mind to explain what are the changes in your experience? I know the technical differences but how do these affect the personal experience between the 2 versions?

Apart from the lack of wired sensors for the Rift S: (a bit obvious)
Comfort with the Halo design and the faceplate moulding is better than the Rift, but both are pretty comfortable...
Considerably less SDE with the Rift S (noticably so)
Better blacks with the Rift (although MURA can often be visible) and more vibrant colours
Original Rift touch controllers are better balanced.
Original Rift Headphones are excellent - Rift S sound pipes lack bass but can sound surprisingly good...

They spring to mind immediately. But overall moving to the S, in my opinion, was a 'good' move because everything about the HMD itself is comfortable, the release issues appear to have been resolved and I can swap between Desktop PC & Laptop without having to move sensors.

Honest and as unbiased as I can be :)

I've got a type-C USB 3.1, a mini DisplayPort connection, and a full-size HDMI out (along with 3 USB 3.0 ports). This is fed by a GeForce 1660ti.

There are also some very good games in VR other than ED...
This is my concern, because my passion for ED is waning. Perhaps VR will change this, but it's a lot of $$ if not.

there are some very nice vr games, however in my experience vr isn't for every day and immersion isn't for everything.

but you will always have war thunder, il2 sturmovik, dcs, racing sims ... and no doubt elite in vr will charge up your batteries for some time.

what i always say in this case, if you're unsure (or suffer too strong anticipation of regret) just get a second hand rift or vive, they're very cheap now. if you then find that's definitely your thing, cough up the cash for a rift s, reverb, index or whatever and a better graphics card. don't get carried away by the hype and the reviews, they are all a bit biased, those headsets are indeed better but the difference is marginal in reality. rift is still pretty good vr, the real thing.

A good chance the laptop will work without issue - the nice thing is that if you buy from an online retailer there will be a 'return window' for you to try it out and return it should it not work/impress the socks off you.
ED in VR, while not a different game (obviously) adds a sense of scale missing in pancake, even 'silly' things like the system map are actually 3D (which is impossible to notice on a monitor) and the first time (and for me, everytime) you arrive in a system and see the star just 'hanging' in space - it is a 'Wow!' moment. I mix between VR & pancake depending on what I intend to do in a session, so get to enjoy both perspectives.

Conventional mining is almost scary when you get 'up close & personal' with a 'roid - and, as expected, core mining gives a lot in VR :)

Have a go, grab a Rift S with as big a return window resellers in the USA will give you, try mining, SRV'ing - visit a Guardian or Thargoid site (more wow!) and make a decision from there.

Oculus have Lone Echo (very wow!) with the second version next year, and may other 'experiences' that are free... Have a play...

oops, didn't mean you 😅

it's just natural that people already into vr and wanting to max out their experience worry about these things, but not everybody is bothered by the same. for someone that is considering vr for the first time that's a bit moot, imo, and the price difference to cover that extra half a mile is huge, while good vr is still readily available for cheap. the most important bit is actually still a graphics card capable enough. (@Duck, i have no idea about laptop graphics cards ....)

I didn't think you were referring to me , so no worries at all! - I was trying to answer a question without going OTT in favour of the S - I've had both original and the S so felt able to pick out good and bad.

My 1070 Laptop runs the Rift S quite nicely, if @Old Duck's laptop has the 'right' connections it will be very good I think.

You should at least try Subnautica if you haven't already. It was by far the easiest game yet to set up for VR (literally just clicked "run in VR" in Steam) and works with my XBox 360 controller.

SO immersive, literally (because it's an underwater game, get it, hehe?) Ok, sorry for that... :/

Dude, i have an 860k black, 8gb (upgrading to 16 soon). Might get myself that samsung headset if a 1050ti can do vr

A cheap way to test it it is to simply get a google cardboard (or other cheap "VR" phone set). I tried it with https://www.trinusvirtualreality.com/ (they did a free trial at the time) and it was glorious. Obviously not as good as a "real" VR setup, but far far cheaper.

I had it running pretty well with ED on my old system with a Google Nexus 6P a cardboard VR set & my trusty old 860k with 16gb DDR3 & a GTX 960.

Unfortunately, it is a complicated PITA when it comes to getting it to work properly...

Welcome to the VR club cmdr! I started on the Rift and and now on the S and am glad I upgraded. In fact I have 2 setup now so I don't have to share with my daughter and we can do Echo Arena and other multiplayers together. I got her the Titanic experience and the opening sequence literally brought her to tears. You drive this little sub down to the wreckage and can go in and explore an actual modern model of it...quite the experience if you're into that sort of thing. IMO the Oculus store does really well with a lot of historical and educational titles, some even free.
o7

(those that are curious about ED in VR I still have a Rift with 3 sensors sitting in its box and is just gathering dust right now hint hint cough pm cough)
