unfair npc's

will you please balance the npc's it realy makes me want to quit playing when i cannot even scratch a npc's shields but he blows me up with just 2 hits where the f### is the fun in that? so far ive played this game for about 2 months and have loged in over 5 weeks playing time and ive been blown up by just about every npc that has attacked me with them being compleatly invulnable to my weapons, why are they so much stronger then myself? fix that, you nerf us the players all the time but never the npc's this game is realy starting to suck, i'm about to quit and i will bet that all the many people who have stopped playing have stopped for this reason do yourself and us a great service and balance the npc's power to match ours and most likely you will keep more people as players

It largely comes down to where your fighting them and the amount of engineering you've done to your weapons and modules. NPCs in combat zones are heavily engineered war birds, whereas in Resource Extraction Sites they tend to by much weaker.

Even mild engineering will make you much better able to take down NPCs.

If you're packing only kinetic weapons ie multi cannons, then you'll struggle to take out their shields.

Obviously some ships are just not designed for combat and you're better off fleeing.

Tell us what ship and outfitting you're packing and I'm sure you'll get some good advice to increase your effectiveness.

Engineer your ship! Tod the Blaster: multicannons with incendiary efx to take down their shields, 1 emmissive to help your gimballed weapons lock onto your targets, and 1 corrosive to do extra damage to their hulls. Get your shields engineered too, so the npc's have to shoot you a lot before they can blow your ship up (but with your engineered muticannons, their ships will blow up first!) 👍

Meh.. do only I see lack of info from the ED side? Putting aside above (great) advice I see frustrated CMDR that got his ship and went for some action and got his stern handed to him on a silver plate. And now he sits, infuriated, not knowing what hit him.

To sum up above:
  • not every combat situation is the same. We have something like gradation in difficulty. Nav beacon bounty hunting is the easiest since NPCs there are the weakest. Then Resource Extraction Sites, next combat zones but those require engineering since opponents use them on regular basis. And engineering adds so much to performance that non-engineered ship has little chance vs engineered one. Last part is Thagroid hunting which require specific loadout to be successful.
  • difficulty rise with your combat rank and NPC combat rank is main indicator how difficult your opponent will be. Not the ship type he's using. Dangerous Hauleer may sound silly but don't be surprised if he mops the floor with your combat ASP.
  • you need to learn a bit about weapons, shields and armor. As said earlier - energy weapons are effective against shields but are not that great on hull. Projectiles are effective on hull but not so much on shields. Turrets are weaker than gimballed and fixed are better than gimballed (rough and basic difference). Optimally you want some enegry for shield stripping and then projectile for hull. Call it starter set and work from there, fitting to your needs.
  • last but not least - ships. Some ships are excellent explorers, some are terrific cargo runners, other are best at combat. Facing such combat oriented ship may be frustrating at start as you get the tough nut to crack. Read about ship types, sizes, their general role and pick your targets wisely.

ED isn't easy game. More times it will kick you in the face, add under the belt hit and spit on your miserable failure. You can try to beat it head on (and rage quit after failing), be persistent and slowly try to learn and overcome difficulties (judging from your post, not the option here) or stay on forums and ask multiple questions about combat, loadouts, tactics, etc. Many knowledgable people here.

Hey there!
We need some more context first, so we provide an appropriate answer and suggestions.

What ship were you flying? Which shields and weapons were you using? Were did you engage the NPC (Combat Zones, Hazardous Ressource Sites, Missions?)?

A few Rules of thumb:
There are a number of dedicated combat ships (Federal Dropship, Viper, Fer-de-Lance etc.), have you tried those?
Different Weapons have different characteristics. Lasers will do better against shield, but are worse against armor. Multicannons on the other hand are good against armor, but weaker against shield. Have you tried mixing your weapons (e.g. 2x Pulse Lasers + 2x Multicannons)?
Some NPC are stronger than others (by a significant margin). LowRes and HighRes might be a good point to start practicing combat. Police NPC are present in those sites and will engage wanted ships. Look out for police attacking "pirate" NPC and "help" the cops. This way you can practice your combat skills and still have a saftey net.
Combat Zones in Civil Wars on the other hand, can contain engineered NPC ships that will whoop your backside if you aren't properly equipped and somewhat trained in combat. Avoid those for the time being.

I keep hearing that multicannons are not good against shields. With the incendiary efx they are great vs shields.

I remember dropping in one of those pirate signal sources, can't remember the name, a system under pirate attack anyway. The NPC's there were HEAVILY engineered. Even my heavily engineered vette had to go refit and repair after 3-4 kills. I can't imagine how long a novice commander in a vanilla ship would have taken to see the rebuy screen in such a USS.

ATR NPC's are even worse, but I don't think that's the NPC's OP encountered.

How do you know he's a troll instead of a newbie?

Frankly I remember quite vividly how frustrating it was to dabble in combat in non-engineered Cobra III when you didn't know how to pick your fights and accidentally firing on dangerous sidewinder on a nav beacon could nuke you off the sky. :)
Yup... a lot of rage posts like this one is a result of genuine misunderstanding about combat mechanics... how shields and sys works, how to manage damage types, all sorts of basics.

Yes.... me, 9 months ago.... brand new anaconda.... A-rated modules.... mission stacking.... kaboom! 😢

Yep, but you need access to engineers for that, so I excluded it from the basic tips. He might genuinely be new to the game, so we should help him one step at a time. Also the MC engineer requires Bounty Vouchers to unlock and since he's struggling with combat at the moment, it might frustrate him even more :D

It feels like the OP is attacking Pythons in a Sidewinder. I'd suggest going back to medium or high security nav beacons or high RESs and attack to the smaller wanted ships initially (Eagles, Adders, Haulers, other Sidewinders) and build from there. Be careful round anything rated dangerous, deadly or elite as well.
