ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Hi everyone. After a quick mod I've been enjoying the hell out of Beta 2 with my DK2. This wasn't possible before because of my extremely narrow IPD. My IPD is 54mm so everything is a blurry mess and makes my rift completely unusable. I was able to mod my rift some duck tape and carboard to get the lenses closer. Luckily I also dound out that fellow cmdr bboyza 3d prints some adjusters that you can fit on your b cups to adjust the lens separation. You can get them at http://www.vr-gear.com/

Unfortunately though, physically changing the lens separation of the lenses also requires the lens separation to adjusted through software. Oculus hasn't deemed this issue important enough so they haven't exposed this variable for user modification. After a lot of digging around bboyza (Barry) and I were able to figure out that the lens separation is stored in the firmware. A Oculus app or game queries the rift for this and other values on start up by going through the OVRService. After we figured this out we were able to create a proxy that intercepts the traffic between the service and the app and modifies the reported lens separation value. This took a couple of days of hacking but it works perfectly. I came up with some of the original code but Barry definitely deserves most of the credit. Anyhow you can find all the details here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2i72wu/great_news_remember_the_lens_separation_adjusters/

TLDR: If you have a really wide or narrow IPD that makes everything blurry then order a pair of these adjusters (or mod the rift yourself like i did) and install the hack in the above link and everything will look crystal clear.

Cheers!
Stephen

Is it just me or did the readability of the Let and Right ship UI panels go way down 2.X.X. They are wider and the font is smaller, pushing them well out of the rift sweet spot when you are looking at them. I have to lean pretty far in to resolve the text in this beta.

I realize they are iterating on a lot of the UI panels but overall the rift accessibility for UI went down a lot in the 2.X.X beta.

Thoughts? Other UI panels that got better/worse on the dk2 in this version?

Is there any way to map control of the Galaxy and system map navigation and selection to the joystick controls? What are people generally doing with their set ups to use these maps?

POV for menu navigation
button press + POV for translation.
Thrust for zoom in and out
X - axis for clockwise/anticlockwise spin
Y - axis for over/under spin

Works like a charm and now really enjoy floating through the Galaxy map

Does the "pop up" info work this way? I can use my mouse to move the map etc. it's the system info thing I can get to work.

Oh my god, thank you so much for this. My IPD is at 71mm, and I get massive eyestrain (and no presence) when playing. It's still awesome but I can't play for long. I just ordered the lense adapters and will be visiting that redit thread when they arrive. Roll on 15th October!!!!!

PS. Thank you and please thank Barry for me to.

Anyone here running an sli setup with their dk2? I'm really tempter to pick up another 680 to go with my current but I've heard a lot about latency. Is it an issue in elite dangerous?

Not sure about Nvidia, but on AMD it's all about the drivers.

I had issues even getting E: D to run unless Crossfire was disabled - and massive texture corruption.

I switched driver version (14.4 for those interested), and it's all lovely now. Don't notice much latency. There is a small amount of judder at times, and occasionally it goes completely haywire in a station for a few minutes and then corrects itself, but my cards are quite old (2 x 7870s) so I put it down to that.

I can live with it until I see the requirements for CV1 and know what card(s) to get next.

EDIT: Helps to kill as many background tasks as you can before running the game. You don't need virus checkers etc doing a scan while you're playing Elite. Anything non-essential for running the game can be turned off.

Thank you for this - will try it. I've found the Galaxy map unusable so far.

On a (slightly) related note - last night I fired up E: D on my 26" monitor. Turned all the graphics options up that has previously been toned down for running on the Rift, and it looks awfully nice. But so flat, and just small. I'm sure if I didn't have an Oculus I'd be doing cartwheels right now at the graphical improvements the team have made.

But once you've played it on the Rift, nothing else compares. Won't be going back to flat. :D

I didn't get much of difference in peformance trying older NVIDIA drivers, but I know others did... I think my problems reight now stam from the fact I'm running a mobile GTX 765, since FD has stated there are problems with mobile cards right now. The only thing I don't get right now, though, is the vast difference in performance as well as visuals I get when I run the game on single display... that deffinetly wasn't there before B2.

In example, Bloom looks horrible on the rift and the hyperspace tunnel looks icredibly fake (you can even see where the textures of the "tunnel walls" end in the center of the screen), to name just 2 problems I have.

Hey Stephen, you here as well :).
It's me Lukas.

@ everyone, the adjusters really work in combination with the additional software!

Not sure how well this will format but these are the latest out of O.R Tracker.

Anyone here running an sli setup with their dk2? I'm really tempter to pick up another 680 to go with my current but I've heard a lot about latency. Is it an issue in elite dangerous?

I finally got my 970 SLI running with the rift tonight! (And thanks to some advice from the awesome denizens of this thread)

It's just absolutely amazing. I'm running full everything with no judder anywhere. SLI is still not fully supported though (the main issue being you have to force AFR2 in the Nvidia Control Panel (and for some reason forcing via inspector didn't work for me).

Also, gas giants come out stripey which looks very weird and a bit crap. Other than that though the game scales remarkably well (I was having to run medium settings with rift quality down a few notches without SLI)

Checking MSI Afterburner on the main screen my cards weren't even being pushed to 50% so I might even try some supersampling! Basically I'm over the moon. SLI was a bit of pain for me to get working but the experience now is the best on Rift IMO.

I've now set up supersampling as well.

For rift users you really have to try it. I'm downsccaling from 2560x1440. The image quality is VASTLY improved.
It's like the difference from taking the Oculus Quality slider from 1/2 to full (or like adding another few notches to the slider)

I am managing to run it fine (max settings) out in space but it juddered in the station. Turning off AO smoothed it out in stations and I don't miss it much so I'll probably leave it off.

If you are running a DK2 then I would 100% recommend trying supersampling even if it means turning your other settings down quite a bit. Everything is sharper, feels more 'real' and the difference for text and menus is night and day.

I used the techniques outlined in this reddit thread:

You can get rid of the stripes by setting environmental quality to low.

Note that you have to set it to medium, hit apply and then low again each time after exiting the game for the proper set of textures to load.

Considering wellys question: I run two 680 Gtx's in sli and get constant 75fps after some tweaking - latency is noticeable, but not that bad - I get used to it a minute into the game.

There also is a thread in Beta discussion named Sli latency test, but as there's no way to measure latency in ED (that I know of) it lacks that incormation, but it's helpful otherwise.

Thanks for the tip, i have tried this with my GTX970s in SLI and the text is a LOT clearer for me, the added bonus is that i havent had to turn down any other settings, one thing i cant make my mind up about though is the blur option, i have tried with it on and off and cant decide which looks better.

That's sounds amazing with down sampling from 1440p. What does motion blur look like as I can't use it at all due to fps drop.

what tweaks have you had to make to get solid 75fps?
