Griefers make open impossible, and how easy the solution is.

Giving salt-miners an immunity toggle is a truly terrible idea. If the BGS was separated between modes and there was an OpenPvE mode, it wouldnt matter much to me. What a waste of dev resources when youve got Mobius to get what you want already.
An Open PvE mode would be amazing. I like that idea way better than mine.

Mobius has player limits and well, I imagine half, 3/4, or more of players on any of the Mobius's are inactive. A PvE mode does solve a lot of issues with unwanted PvP. I don't see it happening though. And the players that need victims would not like it at all.

And in any case we have reached page 69. Time to go to bed.

You name it. And? 😁
Please just stop that silly Punch-and-Judy show. Both sides.
Btw, I have nothing against any form of shooting in Open, with or w/o consent. It's the ridiculous posturing of both sides on the forums what I'm talking about.

Assuming personal shortcomings of people who shoot others in a space shooty game is a strange way to precede a claim that you're not against any form of shooting in said space shooty game.

But I hear Mobius is pretty jammed up and needs manual moderation
Havent you even tried it? Why? Afraid it might deprive you of a gripe? (I can empathise if so)
That argument is almost as silly as when someone asks for a hard-coded Ironman mode and gets the answer: Nobody's stopping you from wiping your commander.
Its not silly when it's a better solution all-round than the suggested change.

Adding a 4th mode, (PvE), is the best solution, even if it is one with probably zero chance of ever being implemented. It gets rid of people that don't want to play with the PvPers, and leaves those that do in open, and bypasses many of the problems Elite D has with the lack of tools for managing large private groups by making them somewhat redundant. PG always struck me as being meant for squadron or group of friends use, and were likely never intended to have 5000+ members. The various Mobius's are not dead, but they are not what I would call healthy due to the lack of any real group management tools. Mobius was an imperfect response to the lack of a PvE mode.

I often fly in in Mobius, particularly when mining and I cannot be bothered to be somebody’s target practice, it is a desolate place in my experience. Last time a commander even showed up on my scanners was over a week ago. The problem with Mobius, as many other things, is that it is dependent on a third party. I suspect a significantly larger fraction of players would opt in for an in-game PvE mode. A large portion of the player base is likely even unaware of its existence.

The problem with a PvE mode is where you draw the line. Sure, you can make player weapons ineffective against other players. This will not stop griefers from running into you with a shieldless sidewinder when you are speeding through the mail slot. Do you then also remove damage from player-player collisions? Do you let player ships fly right through each other? (Yes, ”don’t speed through the mail” slot is one solution to that ...)

Griefers doing that would get reported fairly quickly. I know I have reported it the few times I have seen it in open. Even when i was not involved. Then I blocked that payer as well, same as I blocked that [insert vulgar insult regarding intelligence] blocking the mail slot at Jameson in a Beluga. Zero patience for that stuff. A PvE mode is still the best solution for PvE players, but it's not perfect. Yes, collision off would be one way to go about fixing that issue, but I already do not speed through the mail slot when there are hollow squares around.

No they tried. But that's the point. I jumped into Open after not being in it for nearly a year and within an hour of doing so there was some griefer trying to kill me.

Oh but it's all just in my head I'm sure. 👍

Lol. Ganking is when multiple people kill a player in a game with overwhelming force, making the victim literally helpless. An example would be a few lvl99 characters roflstomping a lvl1 character in diablo3.

You can't get ganked in a corvette. One person cannot gank anyone. All your story does is emphasize you really should not play in Open, you clearly lack the required mindset. Which is absolutely fine. Your entire premise of people begging you to come to open is silly: let me assure you, nobody cares.

Best of luck in Solo. Be careful though: if you take a data courier mission an NPC might 'gank' you!

And here we have another example of why some people don't like Open. It seems to be filled with condescending people who would rather talk down to people and insult them rather than have an actual adult conversation.

Playing in open and participating in PvP doesn't make you better than people who play solo. Pretending that it does just makes you look a bit silly tbh. Like when a CoD player brings up his K/D during a discussion as if a higher K/D makes him better than everyone else or makes his opinions more meaningful.

(It doesn't)

Ganking is just killing without any real lore reason. You can't call them pirates, or anything, because you don't have any cargo, or PP affiliation, or really any reason for them to kill you except they felt like it. Scooping at a sun with nothing in the cargo bay of an exploration ship, get interdicted by a frag mamba while fuel scooping/FSSing the system, and they demand cargo you don't have and blow you up while you type that you don't have anything. That's a gank. Or a really stupid pirate, but... well, yeah, one player can gank another. No need for a group.

Players who are complained about can be removed from the group. Thats more than you could do with an OpenPvE mode.

You would have to let playerships fly through each other in OpenPvE, which would let a big ship sit stationary with a wing of med ships inside its shields playing 'lets exploit the mechanics'. If you allowed collisions, even just removing direct damage done from collisions, would mean ppl playing evil-snooker with squishy ships would be all youd read about on the forum. The salt would be all the worse because 'OpenPvE is supposed to be a safe space'.

At heart tho, ED in the bubble is about the dangers of the wild west/ the high seas, with space ships. NPCs are at it too if that doesnt give a clue. Wanting an OpenPvE 'Cuddle at the OK Corral' is missing the point of the fabric of the game.

It's missing the point of the fabric you wish to wrap yourself in. Other people want other things. Why worry about how they want to play the game if they are doing it away from you? Why worry about what Elite D is to other people? What do you lose if an Open PvE mode were created? The BGS is already effected by solo and PG so it's not really an answer. I have almost zero interest in PvP outside of the occasional CQC, so I don't play in open that much. Mobius is fairly empty most of the time for reasons I have already stated.

More than 1 year. Hundreds other players in contacts. Only 2-3 players tried kill me. Noone tried it even in CG system, even when I was in DBX, during CG I was in cruise and just chat with people, noone ganked me.
WE HAVE OPEN PVE, lel.
Rly guys, why do you have problem with 1-2 kills per year? You can loose only...eee...few millions? Explodata? (it can hurt, but...you have thousands systems, just don't dock in Deciat or jameson after trip).
This isn't hardcore mode, you don't loose your ranks, permits, upgrades, modules and materials.
Gankers aren't real problem.
The real problem is mindset (oh no i get ganked 1 time, all players are bad evil and toxic, galaxy is full of bad boys).
Second problem is fact, that you guys don't listen pvpers giving you advice (no me, I have't interdictor on any of my ships, I don't care pvp, but i haven't problem with few deaths).
I understand, that in some case you cannot defend yourself (for example, little DBX ganked by vette), but in other cases you can defend yourself if you listen some advices.
And no, you don't need cutter with all G5 modules to survive any pvp attack.
PS: Talking, that open is full of gankers, and this is mode only for pvpers is rubbish :)

I can't be some kind of outlier, can I, in my experience of other players in open being largely limited to the odd "o7" in system chat?
Sure, I've been killed before, but that's because I rocked up to the Salome event, just in my regular ship hoping to see stuff going on, and there were of course folks in enginered combat ships all blowing up anyone who was there for the story.

Ganking is just killing without any real lore reason.

I guess to some people the definitions changed, but no, that is not what it means to many. It is also an unworkable definition: you don't know if the attacker has any lore reasons. The idea that whether the incident is a gank or not relies on the proper explanation of actions is a bit odd. Most Cmdr have very little idea what the state of a system is, which factions are there and so on. If you were shipping weapons to a dictatorship I oppose, just because a mission paid you well, there is ample lore reason to destroy you.

More importantly: the idea that space is dark, cruel and fundamentally violent and dangerous is the core of Elite. Anyone who read the ED novels and played the earlier games know that. The risk of people murdering you for no clear reason, outside the small pockets of secured space, is a basic reality in the lore. What 'open pve' people want is the opposite of the ED lore: a Space Trucker game where people honk and wave when they see each other, in perfect safety.

It's fine if people want thst, to each his own. But people who care for 'elite lore': open is the place to be. Not space trucker Valhalla.
