Why did you stop playing Elite?

You need to do the entire FSS dance and grind just to tell if a system is interesting. And therein lies the problem.

Is that the case ?

I've never been much of an explorer, but can't you "honk" and then look at the map ?

I usually just scan the "big" planets that read "unexplored" for pocket money ?

It's too late now, we got what they did and we are stuck with it.

No it isn't, they can just put those old modules back into outfitting. And if the discovery process is revisited again more tools can be added, there is no need to remove what's already there.

I don't explore beyond the bubble now, where everything that would appear on the system map has already been discovered, it works just fine & I only occasionally use the FSS Scanner Screen, most of the time I just map planets I visit & use the data for BGS influence. I can choose to fly to a body or FSS it, and the FSS doesn't become an overwhelmingly tiresome burden (for me, others enjoy it).

That doesn't work in virgin systems, only ones where other players have already sold the data. That's what the ADS did, and it's (optional) functionality was removed in the 3.3 update.

Eh, there's a lot of reasons, but to highlight a few:

-Lack of thargoid storyline development. The buildup to their reveal was great, it felt like a genuine mystery in the game. Things were good for a while but it relatively quickly felt nothing like an alien invasion and became a weekly server tick 'update'. No capital ships, no destroyed systems, no escalation (engineering AX weapons to take on more interceptors at once, etc). At this point, what is happening with the thargoids?
-In a similar tone to the thargoids, the guardians, Col 70 sector, Raxxla, and many other "things" hinted at through the now-defunct Galnet. These teases, much like the mystery of the thargoids early on, added depth and drive to explore and find out more. Cannon Science was great to follow in what they did, but now with none of that progressing, that hook that got me into the game is gone.
-Update bugs and what comes across as a developer that doesn't seem to listen to their player base as much as they should. Granted, they have been making improvements in this area, but I still feel there's a sense that they make their minds up and only after significant outrage by the community do they backtrack (though not all the way at times). This issue isn't a significant reason I stopped playing, but it has tainted my enthusiasm for the game.

On top of those items, I reached the 'end game' for me and own all the ships I'd want to own, done all the things I want to do. There's simply not much else that is really driving me to hop back into the game and continue, at least for now. I've found a handful of other games that are fresh and new to me, and with my personal time being important to me, I'd rather focus it on things I enjoy.

The cherry on top is that it seemed like these could have been "relatively" easy things to continue/fix, but it seemed that Fdev decided to instead, put all their eggs in one basket with the 'new era' coming up and drop the rest of it like a heap of moldy potatoes. It could simply be that timing was off and they didn't estimate on how long the new era was going to take to develop. It could be that many of the above items I listed will be in the new era, but the problem is that they couldn't stretch what they had out long enough to make it work for the longer-term players. I'll definitely look forward to what the new era holds, but I really hope that Fdev decides to start sharing some info soon because another 7+ months of nothing will likely result in another 7+ months of not playing.

I haven't played since October last year.

I have to take breaks from Elite like I do from all my games but I do find myself getting really frustrated at ED, more so than any other game I play. I think it has something to do with my emotional investment in the franchise as I've been playing Elite games most of my life and the current iteration, though better in almost every aspect of the game over previous incarnations is also, somehow, not as good / satisfying / fun / enjoyable in many ways.....oh the contradiction.

In short, it never developed into the game I hoped it would be and it's clear it never will, my bad for having such high expectations.

Anyway, I was planning to come back when carriers launched but then I saw the dev video and saw the asking price, and upkeep costs, and the decommissioning mechanic if you don't play for a prolonged period. It was everything I feared it would be, and FDev have managed to simultaneously build something I was really interested in playing with, yet at the same time making sure that I will likely never play with it due to the cost / grind / mechanics.

I've not kept up since the announcement, I know there has been a couple of betas...has anything much changed with carriers from the initial announcement?

So now I wait for the new era, whatever that will be. Is that still on course for end of the year or has it been pushed back?

Not sure if you really don't know, but just in case: Yes, it has been pushed back to 2021.

Which makes 2020 a very, very disappointing year for Elite in my opinion.

Haven't played since Day 2 of FC Beta 2. That's when I realised that more mining was required.

At this point I've done everything I've wanted to do, and the under whelming arrival of FCs don't change that. Spent too long waiting for decent, fully-baked content in this game.

And right now, Xbox Game Pass (on console at least) is giving this Commander (ex-Commander?) all the space-based content I need. Stellaris (and the open way the devs communicate with the players) is a welcome breath of fresh air. Space Engineers looks interesting and next month I'll be playing No Man's Sky on XB1.

At this point I don't know if I'll be back, it all depends on New Era.

I have faith that the news will break, with or without me. :)

I can't complain about the value for money I've got from the game. 100's of hours from an initial investment of £25. But its disheartening to see Frontier abandon features, content and even narrative. At some point I thought "if Frontier can't be asked, neither can I". That and the FCs led me to find content and fun elsewhere.

New Era is probably another 8 months away, after 17 months of waiting for game-changing content. I'm done waiting.

I really didn't know, so thanks for the answer...I stopped haunting these boards with my disappointment some time ago.

I do check in now and again but hadn't seen that news...not surprising given what a ****ing mess the world is in right now that big projects get disrupted and pushed back.

That's kind of how I feel too. The wait would be easier if we had some info, ANY info, on what we've been waiting all these years for. They pushed it too long, I don't think I care much anymore.

I'm playing other games now, and once the new Microsoft Flight Simulator comes out (which WILL be out this year) I'm not sure I'll ever come back to Elite.

The sad thing about this is they removed a feature after people bought the product. Imagine buying a car with a CD player, only to have the dealer come to your house a year later and replace it with a USB MP3 player without your permission. Sure, the latter may be better, but if you've invested in a collection of CDs, you're going to be pretty ticked off! And "better" is relative, since CD quality is actually better than lossy MP3.

Of course nobody actually buys ED, we just pay for the privilege to use whatever software Frontier wants to give us, or taketh away from us. #EULA

Were the reproducers only capable of playing mp3? I have no CDs but my music files are FLAC.

The first ones were essentially just mp3 players - some even couldn't handle high bitrate files!, newer ones are less restrictive and play most common formats. The music I play in my car is all FLAC (and on my NAS too) - I spent some time re-recording my collection when I bought my first DAB radio for the car with USB input :)
