The dismissal of base-building is a bit of a pity. Not that I'm really into base-building games; and if they're not done well you'd just end up with thousands of poorly built variations of the same basic station modules everywhere.

But if it were done well, it'd add a lot to the game. One of the big problems with games of the scope of ED is populating the universe without making it seem like a massive copypasta. Having thousands of Cmdrs building bases / outputs / towns all over the cosmos would add a lot of variety, and detail, and entropy and lore to the galaxy.

Is there any possibility that one of y'all could elaborate, even in a very general manner, on what this experience would be like for someone who plays in VR full time? I know it's too early for a lot of details, but essentially I'm curious whether my VR flying experience would be affected by this change or not. If I sit down to fly like I do now, will there be moments in normal daily gameplay where I would need to remove my headset to walk around in space legs, or will space legs be separated enough that someone like me could have a gameplay session of all of flying in VR without worrying about it, followed by perhaps another session of all space legs for FPS gameplay, etc.

If I wish to continue to play ED as a VR game, will the new content be so intermixed in with the current content that I will no longer be able to do that without suffering a serious disadvantage (similar to if someone from base game tried to ignore Engineering), or will the two be separate enough that I could essentially treat them as different gameplay modes without negative consequences to my normal gameplay?

These are exactly my concerns. I don't want to be forced to take my HMD on and off as I go through a play session. Nor do i want to have to log out, change my settings to non-vr, log back in to continue, etc. (for those without VR, the resolution and several other settings are different between VR and 2D play). This is why i suspect i will be forced to simply not be buy the DLC until it supports VR.

Can someone point me to where they say vr is not supported for odyssey because I have not seen that a frontier official or unofficial position?
Is this just being called out because it wasn't mentioned therefore it isn't going to be supported?

In other words, is this just fan speculation and worry and not fact.

Any info appreciated

Thanks for being open and finally answering that question. That's about all I can say right now.

O7,
🙃

I've captured this video of TheLawful at his work right now.

I guess it's just not clear. For example, at the moment the boundary between base game and Horizons is when you try to enter the exclusion zone of a landable planet. It's not like base game players see one version of the game's render engine and Horizons players see another.

Fair enough, it's not clear. Only future FDev announcements can clarify it beyond mere speculation. All I can say is I got my comfort blanket ready 😀

So, i'm speculating here, but i presume if you are wearing a headset, even if VR isn't supported, you'll still be able to swivel your head around and look around right? It just won't have all the compensation code in and won't rotate the head of your commander's model?

If it means that your VR headset won't enable you to look around, then yeah, i can imagine that will suck giant donkey marbles.

I wouldn't be surprised if VR for Odyssey never happens. There's a lot of problems to solve.

Yep, and that's what many of us are concerned about. I stopped playing the game seriously last year after the final chapter of Beyond dropped. Too much "been there, done that" for me. Now, here we are with some new places to go and I may not be able to do that in VR. Bummer for me.

Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7

2 Questions,
will I be still able to play in VR for the current parts of the game that support it, or will VR support go away altogether?

Is support for VR likely to be introduced later for Odyssey?

Anything about ship interiors??????

I'm really hoping they support head tracking (like ED Tracker & TrackIR), as it makes first person games so much easier to play.

It gives you much of the benefit of VR, without all the cost & difficulties.

No base building... a bit disappointed in that to be honest. Out of all the rumored features/additions, this was the one I was most interested in, followed by atmospheric landings. For me, there is something about owning "housing" in games like this I like. I guess my Carrier will be my "Base". But in the end it was an unconfirmed rumor after all, so I can not fault FDev in anyway.

Not too concerned about no VR, as I play across 4 monitors (3 for game 1 for inara/eddb). VR makes me sick lol.

Space Legs, wasnt a big deal for me. Cool, very, but not "OMG gimme the LeGz naoooooooow!" Kinda feature. I'd love to see how they will implement it (I really just want legs to walk around my Ship and my carrier)

Still going to get it because it looks great and will still add lots of cool content I think. And hope.

No VR, shove the update up your biowaste hole. This update was your last chance to redeem yourselves FDEV and you screwed it up yet again. Just more excuses for the low effort you put into developing this game.

VR could work just like the 2D game but just like everything you have developed since the original release its just low effort box ticking.

No VR = No Play.
