In case you wonder why you get ganked in open

Not interested in the drama, but those stats are interesting. The average fight takes almost five minutes, and the median is well over a minute. You need +-20s for spin up and jump.

Speaking for myself, but if I were ganked it would signify to me I did something wrong.
most of those kills are not against weak players. a proper pvp fight takes a while.

I like the rush. I also love the feeling of escaping a gank. It's kinda like Jeremy Clarkson doing his "loser" to Richard and James when he passes them in a faster car.
After switching to PC, I loved flying around in my unengineered Cobra with my mostly harmless combat rank and escaping every gank attempt on me. It's also a great way to earn respect in the ganking community.
I mean, G4NK have completely stopped trying to gank me because they've failed every single time.

Umm yes, but you are one of those who play the game for the combat largely right? Especially the PvP side of things? That is not all that common among those who prefer to play for exploration or trading or whatever.

In Elite, everyone has the same start, and the same opportunity to learn evasive skill, proper outfitting, and sensible mode choices based on one's personal risk tolerance.

Absolutely pathetic that combat logging is the hill you've chosen to die on.
Remember that time when you thought Santa was real? Turned out it was an illusion. I'm afraid the "honourable" death falls in the same category. I'm sorry for all those who died, and even more for their loved ones, but honour is a middle age myth that helps no one.

Treat me like I'm a bad girl
Even when I'm being good to you

I don't want you to thank me
I want you to....gank me

I actually do everything. I take a little pride in the fact that I have a ship for every occasion. PvP and combat are my favorite but I've been really getting into exploring again lately. Especially exploring with friends.
Im just an open veteran I guess you could say. I've been playing in open for years and there's almost no situation I haven't encountered before. I love the idea of there being danger around every corner.
I respect the solo players and have no problem with players in solo and PG but I don't know how you guys do it. This game is so boring to me without random player interactions.

WE just prefer PwP rather than PvP. PvP is boring. PwP is fun.

Its just a different mind set.

The problems start when people (on both sides of the equation) expect those on the other to play their way and enjoy it (or they don't care if they enjoy it, they should just be forced to play their way or not play at all).

Take solo/pg as training mode for open. once you can build a ship (opened engineers), you go to open and start learning the tactics. see what works and what doesn't, learn how to counter different things. than you get a hang of it and never look back.

Hm - I tried engineering when it was first introduced, didn't care for the mat. gathering involved, there's an engineered Cobra of mine parked somewhere among the stars, now I fly a standard Python though, it's obviously nowhere near the specs for dedicated PvP ships I see posted here, ...

It's probably enough to escape most player attacks, but not to actually win a fight against a capable human opponent in a larger ship I suspect.

There's little use in flying in open when you have to run from every hostile encounter, is there ?

You can have non-hostile encounters in Open too, which is presumably why you'd ever want to play in it if you're not a fan of PvP. I had a really nice time taking a bunch of newbs to an active Thargoid site once.

I know - I'd say most encounters are non-hostile, I do fly patrols in open and have never been attacked even once, it almost seems you have to put yourself in a "position" to be attacked, running cargo missions in high traffic systems, sitting still to enjoy the view etc.

I guess the strategist (avoid decisive battle unless the odds are stacked in your favour beforehand) in me is in conflict with the pilot (enjoy dogfight on even terms) - maybe I should look into the other game mode where pilots fly standardized ships for that particular purpose :)

[...] I'd say that it is just a way of keeping score.
Just like the gankers keeping score of their victories then?
You're permitted your wrong opinions, and they provide me amusement.
How generous of you to permit @Phisto Sobanii his opinions. Out of curiosity: can opinion be wrong?
[...] once in-game, they transform into in-game sociopaths.

Out of all your rantings, this, for me, is the only bit that made some sense yet and is worthy of being pointed out again.

I would say at least 80% of my encounters are non hostile i.e. we simply ignore each other, then I usually send an o7 unless the cmdr is an imperial loving scum (aligned to an imperial power). In that case, well ...

Could someone set up a system for recording who has died the most? That way all parties could enjoy the thrill of fighting (non-fighting) their way to the top of a table.

Pave your own path , play the way you want, good for you !

Re: Solo/PG vs Open >>>
Honestly whenever I've been in Open all I have experienced is o7 or getting ganked(it is fun getting away :D )
ED is definitely not a proper MMO, so hence the only use I see Open for is in PvP(just imho)... and I don't PvP :)
