Ship decision: Krait MkII or Python?

I faced the same decision not to long ago and bought the python first. Becouse alot of folks were saying"python hands down" and so on.

Let me say this. If you intend to do any combat especially without engineering. Stay away from the python as it turns like a snail.
It is still a very good ship no doubt but for combat the krait is the better choice. It has a much better turn rate and has a insane boost cap. And there is the SLF bay you can fit in.
There are good reasons way alot of cmdrs use it for Tharg combat.

If you are not interested in combat the python might be a better choice.

In the end it depends on what you need the ship to do.

If you have an Elite NPC pilot and want to do some combat or exploration then Krait, for everything else Python.
That's pretty much it as far as I'm concerned. They're both great ships and you should own one of each, but I would personally go for the Python first. It'll earn you the money to buy the other one in a hurry.

But that's just my opinion: Embrace the healing power of "both" :)

I'd have to disagree on that one, even though I agree with just about everything else you said, at least if you've got your engineering stuff going. If you don't, then you're right. But with thrusters engineered to max, my Python is just as agile as I need her to be in all but the most marginal of situations, and since I really don't care for the added micro of having a whiny, overpaid SLF pilot on board. Again, personal preference. Good points, though! :)

I was talking about the unengineered Python.

Get both - Python first, setup for mining, then the Krait a couple hours later ;)

Seriously, I like my Krait for combat-oriented stuff (I'm slowly ranking up an NPC pilot so I have a fighter bay installed), and my Python for trading/missions, though Python is no slouch at PvE combat either.

So I'm slowly getting together the credits required for a medium sized allrounder. I've sort of narrowed it down to these two but would like people's thoughts on the relative merits and drawbacks of these two. Also open to other suggestions but I want a medium sized ship with decent offensive/defensive abilities and a fair sized cargo capacity.

I'd suggest you start with Krait MK II since the hull is cheaper. In LYR space it's around 37.5 million. The important thing to remember is that between the Krait MK II and the Python you really only need to pay for the hull. The hard points, utilities and core internals are an exact carbon copy. The optional internals are are nearly identical too.

Once you have a extra 48.5 Million grab a Python hull in LYR space and shuttle what upgrades you already have from the Krait to your new ship. Fly it for awhile while upgrading a little more and swap back. Rinse and repeat the process through engineering until you settle on which you like more. You may end up doing what I did in the process, buy and keep multiples of both.

I keep a main combat ship (aChief) and a hauler/miner. Until the Krait Mk II came out my hauler was a Python, but I just never used it. I would pass on tasks needing the hauler, just because I hated to fly the Python. The Python just collected dust.

The Krait changed all of that. I will now jump between combat and trade/mining without even wincing. I enjoy the flight characteristics of the Krait almost as much as my combat ships, and none of my investments into the Python were wasted, except for the paint jobs I bought trying to raise the appeal of the Python.

Just remember, never sell your Krait/Python to afford another ship. Which ever you decide on. You will just end up needing another one.

Only because you specified "slowly getting together the credits" - implies you are not swimming in credits and hence can't get both which would be best answer.

So since can't get both, get the Python (because of your credits situation). Reason I say this is because as others said, the main distinction between them are better all rounder Python vs Krait w/ SLF capability.

But using an SLF means getting a pilot - which takes a share of your credits. For most players this share is negligible impact to overall credits balance. But if can't afford to get both ships, then your credits situation is one where the pilot share would matter.

Hence I would suggest get Python, use it to build up healthy CR balance, then either switch to Krait or get both.

I will give you the pros and cons of both compared to each other and you make the choice:

Krait MK2:
Pros:
  • Bether mobility;
  • Bether Cockpit view;
  • Fighter capable;
  • 2 crew spaces for multicrew;
  • Slightly bether jump range;

Cons:
  • One less size 6 optional slot;
  • A bit less shield and hull HP;
  • Weapon convergency may be a problem to get used to, since there is a blind spot where the hardpoints in the top of the ship can't hit;

-----------------------------------------------
Python:
Pros:
  • One extra size 6 optional slot;
  • A bit more Shield and hull HP;
  • Bether weapon convergency;

Cons:
  • less maneuverable;
  • No fighter bay;
  • 1 multicrew slot;
  • Slightly worse jump range;

I went with the Krait Mk II for my first. Eventually bought a python for mining but Krait Mk II IMO is a better ship

Indeed, Python is the best medium cargo hauler and the best medium passenger and the best medium miner
Krait Mk2 is second to those, but is better in combat due to the SLF hangar

So, overall Python wins hands down, but if you are more combat focused, a Krait Mk2 might serve you better
My name is Asuka Zeppelin and I approve this message.

The Python is an overpriced, obsolete model.

The Krait Mk2 is an improved more versatile ship, and, due to the advances in ship building technology between now and the ancient times the Python was made, the Krait is cheaper too.

paraphrasing Princess Bride quote, I don't think obsolete means what you think it means.

When carrying capacity is still such a big part of this game (not only part, just saying reasonably good part for many scenarios), there are many reasons to want Python over Krait II

If you don't care about cargo capacity, fine. Doesn't mean other players share same opinion - hence Python isn't obsolete.
