The Circumnavigation of Mercury

Crazy stuff

Good luck, and don't get space surface madness.
Just stumbled upon this. Good luck πŸ––πŸ––πŸ––

I'm looking forward to reading about your progress πŸ‘
Thanks both. I'm sure surface madness is a thing. I suspect it will set in when I reach the dark side of Mercury - although it will be interesting to see, with the length of the journey not far short of the rotational period of the planet, whether I will remain in daylight. Sol has certainly been rising in the sky since I started on the terminator 12 days ago. I did consider making this a polar circumnavigation at first - driving along the terminator. That was when I assumed that Mercury was tidally locked like our Moon - always presenting the same face to Sol. Wikipedia put me right on that score.

Oh, it can be.
When I was circumnavigating Kumay, the closer I got to the end the faster I was going. Firstly, because I was learning how to flyve and getting slightly better at it, but secondly, because after two weeks of constant driving I began missing other parts of the game
It can be endurance contest for sure.

Also, Hi @Jonas Treesong πŸ‘‹:D
(His thread about circumnavigation of Ariel got me so excited I couldn't stop pestering him in game. He was having some great adventure there and I just couldn't stay away :p)

Hi @Florenus πŸ‘‹! Long time....

A few days ago I read back my thread about circumnavigating Ariel. Remember scouting "The Sack"??. Also our adventure on Kumay was brilliant. Both good times. It's been a long time I did some serious SRV driving. I might head out to Mercury and see if I can spot @Andrew Linton

I love this kind of driving over the surface of Mercury; skimming from summit to summit. It feels like the stepping stones in the Bog of Eternal Stench (Labyrinth). Of course it always ends in the same way as shown here by my dipping a toe in the bog or, even worse, a head.

By the way, times zones and real life permitting, I'd be happy for any member of the Circumnavigation Club to join me for a drive.

Note: this video was recorded using OBS with the Recording Quality set to 'High Quality, Medium File Size'. I think I'll revert to Indistinguishable Quality and buy another external drive to record the whole circumnavigation. 4Tb should do it: 360 degrees at, say, 10Gb per degree.

Circumnavigation threads are usually housed in the Exploration forum. Do you specifically want it to be here, or shall I move it for you?

PS. Just found and re-read my own circumnavigation thread. It was fun!
Thanks for tidying the forums by moving this thread to Exploration

I was planning on doing a trip to Sol and come and join you for a bit sometime over the coming week. Are you in Open? And what time zone? My driving skills are rusty as I have not touched an SRV for quite some time but it's just as good a time as any to brush them up a bit :D

I am Game Time + 1 and will be either in Open or Fleetcomm. Check with me closer to the time - I'm having some problems with my (second) TWCS Throttle at the moment. Intermittenly, button 5 activates all of the buttons at once and none of the other buttons do anything. The throttle still works, so I can still drive, but I have lots of features programmed on the buttons that make life easier.

As to driving skills, I was hoping to pick up some tips from you. πŸ˜ƒ

Hehe :) I hope I will not disappoint...

Is your commander name the same as your forum name? I can send you a friend request and that will make finding each other a bit easier.

EDIT: ignore my question, apparently we're already friends

Mohs 11.png

The most powerful magnet known to science and, at 11 on the Mohs scale of hardness, I keep well clear.

Distance travelled4,471.2km
Equivalent to completely circumnavigating a body with a radius of 711km.

I'm at longitude -5, so in the next day or so I will reach the Prime Meridian; so much easier to do the mental arithmetic of how many degrees travelled; just add 110 to the current longitude.

If there's anyone near Sol, I would love to know where the terminator is right now on Mercury i.e. its easterly longitude. It interests me to know how far away dusk is.

I feel like the business school experience curve is starting to kick in; my travel times per degree have been under 25 minutes for the last 4 degrees. I suppose CMDR John McEnroe would be striving to complete the perfect degree by travelling flat out at 36 metres per second for the whole 42.6 kilometres. That would mean going the distance in only 20 minutes.

The Mauve Adder sent me back 8km on the journey to (0,-6).

(I went back to High Quality recordings when I was put off by the 14Gb file I created using Indistinguishable Quality. Nobody's ever going to see these recordings anyway)
