Polygon and Twinfinite interviews - more Odyssey details, unknowns, and Walking-In-Ships not at launch

Just leaked! This is how we get our Armstrong moment!

One of the videos or screenshots showed an SRV with hatch open like that, so it is coming or at least was/is being explored.

I think the main issue with Odyssey isn't Odyssey but the way FD Communicates and the sometimes inexplicable expectations of some players.

I have been plenty salty about the comms, marketing and CM teams lately but have no doubt the devs will produce some very nice new experiences. Whether they appeal to everyone well YMMV.

they already confirmed planet tech, light atmo, plants (maybe animals based on the one interview in a gaming mag), meeting in FPS mode in social spaces (where ganking won't be allowed), shops, walking around planetary outposts, FPS gameplay, and a huge plus for me just seeing NPCs walking around inhabited areas to really bring them to life.

All that is a huge amount of work. It isn't like the Devs haven't produced what we already have. They are capable. 6 months to implement some atmo flight tweaks- not worried. 6 months to implement transition from pilot chair to feet likely means they don't know if we will do an SRV maneuver via blackout to elevator, appear just outside a door on a ramp, or teleport directly to the ground; but since we aren't going to walk to the exit yet I don't think this in itself is a major concern.

Folks extrapolate innocuous statements and 6+ months of dev time into "nothing has been done, game will melt and devs will deliver nothing'. <not directed at you Rubbernuke, other posters in this thread though . . .

Please point me to the place where this was said, as I've not seen it?
It's on Burr Pits discord. He asked the question, they got back to him to say they didn't say that.

I'm thinking we may get partial interiors for each ship. That's my hope anyway. I also don't see the point in having full interiors.

As I said earlier in this thread. That isn't what happened. :)

I asked Frontier for clarification, they were uncertain about what has been and hasn't been said - and needed to get clarification. Buur then posted the response to my question on his Discord. Which is totally fine. But Frontier didn't deny saying it.

Here's the quote from earlier in this thread:

As you can see it says "we haven't confirmed either way". That's not a denial. :) Bottom line, we need to await clarification from Frontier...

The new consoles are not even released. The first devs to adopt them have to spend considerable effort /money getting up to speed using the new capabilities. Since the new consoles should run old games (except those using Kinect, per MS), it's most economical for FD to have a crossover period and take more time to adjust Cobra to the new capabilities of the machines and the porting team to work out the least cost/effort way to port to the new console features that they want to support.

As of January 1, 2021 there won't be that huge an installed base to support the limited ED player base that will immediately shift and FD couldn't recover the investment for years. It just makes more sense and is more practical to not push on that for this year. But being a business, FD will of course plan to release games on the next gen consoles.
Absolutely spot on, this.

Can you imagine if FD had put a hard dependency on PS5 readiness and XboxX readiness for the release of Odyssey?

It doesn't bear thinking about.

That's the thing, they've dropped a bit of a teaser of some stuff to generate hype in accordance with their marketing plan which hasn't fully played out yet.

The whole front page of dang dis, reddit and some parts of the gaming media is now advertising for the DLC. So it's working.

They only thing we know for sure is they haven't told us everything, but they've certainly got us interested.

Which is what I said. We don't know whether they'll be in or not, whether they'll be partial interiors etc. We will just have to wait and see.

I'll be honest, I'm going to check out what they do drop on us because... well... I'm hitting that wall myself of needing something else to do beyond endless pumping bullets into flying tanks or asteroid mining. Now that my carrier will never be refueled again in Colonia a lot of my plans have been uprooted and I'm not really playing much these days. No ship interiors though is going to be a major put-off to me.

Meanwhile, there's no word on whether Elite will even be backwards compatible on a PS5. Given they've just announced that they have no plans for next gen at the moment, that leaves us currently with no future beyond PS4.

Here is a screengrab of what was posted in Buurpit's Discord, which is an apparent copy pasta of an official response to ObsidianAnt's query, apparently taken from a shared communication-platform seemingly populated by both FDev and content creators (including ObsidianAnt and BuurPit).

Can @OA or anyone confirm this "shared communication platform" with FD and "content creators" (they don't create content mostly, they just repeat what FD says to us all and stream gameplay-which anyone could do if they want. I watch a few videos but mostly find the whole idea of watching other people play a game to be a bit bizarre when I could just be playing the game myself.

Along with leaked Early Access to EDO, I have a huge distaste for this type of "special" relationship for FD to have with a select few streamers.

It just seems out of tune with the times and a bit sleazy to me.

It isn't 1990, we have this great Forum and all sorts of stuff on the internet like direct Email where FD could easily engage all the interested players.

This is just stupid and probably also infuriates the DDF-tier backers who were promised powers to influence the game in no uncertain terms, but were ghosted by FD before launch.

Again, no issue with developers as I think they are doing good work. But FD Communication, Marketing and the whole idea of CM team- what are they even doing? It's like 94% secret, 1% teaser videos and 4% livestream playing the game and 1% actual engagement with Forums/community on gameplay, design, direction, etc.

If you're asking NDA-tied content creators to break their NDAs, I think you're going to be disappointed.

That content creators have early access to news isn't new - the gaming press have had the same for decades. It's the new paradigm of product promoting, getting the news out amongst many avenues etc. Same goes for forums, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc etc.

[EDIT: You meant generically, not @StuartGT specifically.}

I'm not asking for NDAs to be broken.

I simply don't see the point of this. It isn't like old school marketing days where the press were the only way to reach your customers or potential customers.

Essentially this preferential treatment means everyone in that group should be REQUIRED to clearly state and post in text that FD have given them privileged access and information in exchange for promoting the game, as well as links to the cash shop which net the streamer a portion of the proceeds. That is truth in marketing/advertising. To not do that is in my opinion, misleading the influence that FD may have on some persons versus an entirely independent opinion= that's the way anti-corruption laws and rules in companies work. For example I cannot take any gift from a vendor that wants to do or does business with my company or I risk being fired if it is found out because ANY freebie means the possibility of influencing my decision making.

And, when the favored were flown/allowed into FD Towers to help calm the masses when all the negativity was going on after Horizons season, what did it really get FD? I recall no benefit. I recall a few streamers saying they had an NDA but the "stuff" they saw looked good or allright. That was it.

So again, FD can easily send out a press release and then post it on the forums. They can give an interview with press and then link to it once published. But are you saying content creators are getting exclusive interviews and information that benefits FD before the NDA is lifted? You/one produces videos and post them generally the day news breaks. If you are doing that ahead of time due to early access how much lead time does that really give you and if everyone got the info at the same time would it really matter?

So no, my position hasn't changed, this sort of arrangement is outdated and does not align with FD trying innovative tech - it is like old-tech marketing.

How about FD produce a slick newsletter like Sagittarius Eye with peeks of the week or month? Why don't they do DDF/Focused Feedback again? Why don't they make GalNet videos of happenings in-game and post like YouTubers? If the CM team is spending a bunch of time on streamers and media IMHO they would be better off spending more time here and a bit less on that.
