Polygon and Twinfinite interviews - more Odyssey details, unknowns, and Walking-In-Ships not at launch

Flashback :
Those early videos and DDF are gold. Hopefully that's still the target state as it is my personal V1.0 version for ED and what I dreamt of when playing the original on my C=64.

Undoubtedly as long as FD are making money on ED sufficiently, it will be developed. But, it would be nice if DB took 30 minutes twice a year to record a 10 minute video update at the Grand Scale. Remind everyone these big-ticket features are still the path, in R&D maybe. Alert the newbies to the history and already set direction and remind the kids that don't understand business or software development salt miners that no-the game development hasn't stopped. Seems like a reasonable use of someone's 1 hour a year, but what do I know, I'm not the busy FD CEO.

Overall happy, although I certainly have my own quibbles.

I should just quit the forums and wait for Beta or release as it's less time consuming and less drama. I struggle with that as I'm interested and hope FD are taking on feedback, and the forums seem like they ought to be the direct channel to FD.

Still legs has been on the cards since kickstarter so not really unexpected that it would be an fps unless some here imagined you'd get legs and just walk about looking at rocks.
I agree that the term first person shooter is somewhat open for interpretation, but I seriously hope they won't put all the bets on that shooter part because it's a tough field to pull off properly. I mean, NMS has first person view and shooting, but I wouldn't exactly call it a first person shooter.

For me, and quite a few other players I presume, no ship interiors = no spacelegs. It was one of the biggest promises since the beginning, a big "funding-attractor" and, with all the development resources and time spent, I consider it unacceptabe not to be present in Odyssey.
IF those publications are correct that is.

I like to believe that interiors are coming though, just because FDev said that Odyssey is by far the biggest update yet.
The FPS module, the added rendering detail on two preexisting kind of planets, the tweaked sky-box, and the ground-based missions, all look and sound good, dont get me wrong.
But how can these constitute an update bigger than Horizons (where after all most of those features were introduced for the fist time) ?

Of course it is too early to make any assumptions, but for me personally, the biggest update yet, without ship interiors, would just be the biggest lie yet.

All I have to say is that if ship interiors and space station walking about doesn't come (not talking about at launch) within the year, that is when I will be dissapointed, Low atmos planets are gonna be exactly the same as zero atmos, except with a different sky. The line about seeing how big our ships are, were the exact same comments from horizons about buggys .. I couldn't care less about some random flora to discover .. It's a plant, Ok .. move along, nothing to see here.

I highly doubt the flight experence will be any different, there won't be weather .. it's gonna be airless worlds with a sky .. I am looking forward to the new planet tech, those planets look great .. but so did Ice worlds in the reveal last year .. I hope I am wrong.

Oh i missed that part my bad.

I did! Rocks are great! Been studying for more than 25 years now! I remember in First Encounters setting out AMEs, revisiting them to get what little minerals they retrieved, and hoping that one day FD would make a game where we could do that in more detail.

Random guess, it's because they have to figure out how they're going to dig their way out of this and need time to craft a 'damage control' response.

Did anyone notice the alt tabbing in the live stream with the senior designer, there was a powerpoint document seemingly titled "Community contingency.."

Just something I noticed.

Not that I think it means anything or I'm reading anything into it personally. I just thought I'd throw it out there for someone with more tin foil than me to have a pop at.

Experiencing combat in First Person doesn't necessarily translate into a First Person Shooter. A FPS is pretty limited in game play. Just go look at every FPS.

I had to heavily role play to be awed by plants, and it worked, for the first few. But when you realize there are "oh my god, actual alien flora, something that developed over billions of years away from earth!" on every other world with the same skin, it got old and immersion breaking fast. Brain trees in the galaxy are more prevalent than mice on Earth, lol.

In the event of a total community meltdown the forum will be replaced with an open letter

Depends what qualifies as FPS. I mean, some would say ARMA 3 is a first person shooter, but it certainly isn't very limited in gameplay.
taken at face value...I think CoD, Battlefield/BattleFront, Apex Legends, Fortnite, PubG, etc as FPS. I don't consider games like Fallout as FPS despite having elements of it. I would feel confident in applying the same to Elite Dangerous.

I agree, the biological signs are IMO an example of underutilizing existing mechanisms. A good idea for new stuff to find, but one quickly realizes that they are just same 10 or 15 different models, neatly arranged into same hotspot formations and that's about it.

First person perspective does not make a game a first person shooter. There's surely a Venn diagram for this somewhere.

Ok so hear me out I've put lots of no thought into this but the document says contingency. I think they know that some people will not be happy that their favourite pet thing might not be in Odyssey so Frontier have came up with a contingency plan where they ban these people from the game but to avoid any backlash on social media they'll use the printer behind Stephen to 3D print more commandos who look identical to those who will be banned.

Ahhh yes, thanks buddy. Makes perfect sense now.

I don't see how anyone can reasonably hang their hat on any warped definition of FPS regarding Elite Dangerous. But I guess if arguing semantics is the argument du jour then by all means, don't let me get in the way of it.

That's the crux of the issue: Trying to wedge Elite Dangerous into gameplay stereotypes. Better is to figure out what gameplay could be gained for this game by allowing us to walk around and manipulate things with our digits and appendages, rather than by remote as we are doing at the moment.

The game was breaking new ground when it came out, and should continue to do so. People already have mentioned the Halo series as something to play if it is a shooter experience they want. Why should ED cater to every gameplay style out there?
