No. You are misreading the system map. Your carrier is shown as orbiting the star, just like the various Gas Giants. It is not far away.
Ah I see. I thought the sysmap showed which body the carrier orbited. Cheers!

It does, but yours is orbiting the star. If it was orbiting a body there’d be a line drawn to that body and the carrier icon would be below the body.Ah I see. I thought the sysmap showed which body the carrier orbited. Cheers!
You will find it on the structure just ahead of the landing pads on your model - location is different for different "models".
Expect to be underwhelmed.

That sounds as if Inara has been setup using the concept that Carriers are leased rather than purchased, which some believe because they can be taken from you if you don’t keep up the payments.Ah yes, I see it now. Underwhelmed mode on.
Also, what is interesting is how Inara sees carriers. What I mean is, ones credits and assets take a 5bnCR nose dive when purchasing one - I would have thought it would see the carrier as an asset. Credits, I understand. Just a thought.
In the last patch FD upped the yield in single hotspots, and reduced dramatically the effect of overlaps. So nowadays, single hotspots are only a very small amount less productive than the best doubles (and by that I mean they are right on top of each other, so the centers overlap -- anything that only overlaps on the edges is worthless).Hmm... tritium hotspots are a bit thin on the ground around here, let alone any tri2's. Are single hotspots worth delving into, or do they give very low yields?
At this rate, I'll be going back to the bubble to buy a hold full.
From what I understand, this is how the game portrays your assets as well.Ah yes, I see it now. Underwhelmed mode on.

I've tested using the miners analyzer and I can confirm that things are working this way.
For me, that means I can get approx 100T in an hour. It takes just over that to jump 500LY in my carrier, equipped as it is.
Personally, I consider that amount of time barely acceptable, and I will probably only mine Tritium when I absolutely have to do so.
If I mine an hour for Painite, that same 100T will buy me a lot of Tritium, because Painite sells for 600-900k, compared to Tritium at 40-52k.
I decided to add some screenshots to clarify the system map. I was in there, anyway
Here's how the system map looks when you first jump to an undiscovered system, in your carrier. The carrier is orbiting the star at this point. Most of the bodies don't show up because I have not used the FSS yet. Anyway, you can see that the line it draws to the carrier is quite long, and makes it look like the carrier is beyond the asteroid belt, when it is not. I think they add carriers to the system map last, after everything else is in place.

And here's how the system map looks after I have run the FSS on everything. You can see how it fills in all the bodies, but the carrier is still shown last. Everything on the top line is orbiting the star, and the carrier is again shown last even though it's right next to the star.

And here's how the system map looks after I've jumped my carrier to orbit one of the small planets. Now it's more clear where it is, I think.

I agree that the display is rather confusing due to the carriers always being added last. But it's understandable once you realize that part.
Hey, I just figured this out, thanks to your previous question, Tyres, and it's solved a little problem for me.
During travelling, when I first jump into an undiscovered system in my carrier, I always wonder if it's worth stopping to run the FSS. I've been just doing it for any undiscovered system.
But today I saw this when I arrived at one:

There is NO ROOM left to fill in any bodies. Which means, there are no bodies!
Which means I don't have to bother launching my ship and using the FSS here, even though the system is not tagged. I'll get the tag on the star anyway.
This will save time. So, thanks!
We can only Honk in supercruise, carriers can't supercruise...If only your carrier could honk...
It's just a ring that's far from the planet. What was wierd was that I couldn't probe it: I was always too far away
