........ I can see that for this kind of sim, pedals for yaw (and probably a flight yoke) are likely preferable to a stick with twist, ........

Pedals are definitely worth investing in as you need yaw for proper aerodynamic control - which is why I don't use my pedals in Elite as that flight is completely different and using pedals in that really messed with my flight sim co-ordination. If you progress on to helicopters then pedals are essential really.

There is no need to buy a yoke, since you have a really good stick then that will serve for all aircraft (lock off the twist when you get pedals). Choppers, Airbus, fighters and many newer aircraft use sticks anyway.

I don't know the availability of pedals at the moment - I have CH Pro pedals and think they are great (built to last), maybe the cheaper Thustmaster T-Flight ones will do the job, I don't know but Logitech now make what were the Saitek ones. There is no need to go forking out for things like Crosswinds or the expensive Thrustmaster as you really just want something robust enough to give you three axes and not break when you kick it by accident. ;)

Noticed this from the iRacing forums, someone has started creating bush trips (and registered a proper domain name, it seems):

I like the look of this trip. I'll have a go at it this weekend.

There are mountains in my region that IRL are bare rock on the top, but MSFS covers them with trees. It's very disappointing. However, it's relatively easy to add exclusion zone polygons using the built-in developer tools, so I'm thinking of doing this myself to add a proper treeline. Now if only I could get rid of all the snow and clouds baked into the aerial photography! Bing Maps is terrible... :(

ps - Dear XPlane, partner with Google to make a photorealistic sim like MSFS, and I'll happily defect to your camp.

As the link I posted earlier shows that is not at all true for the entire planet. It may improve your local area but will degrade others.

Pedals are mostly sold out here. All brands. :/

Yeah, I think the general message to anyone looking to buy flight sim hardware at the moment is - "Good luck, you'll need it."

Between this releasing and reaching a wider audience than any flight sim in history, combined with the inevitable effects of Covid on production of all goods worldwide, means that anything even half-decent is like hen's teeth. I have T-Flight Hotas 4, which is not great, but it works "okay-ish" and I just need to calibrate it and set the deadzones better. And get better at actual flying. Not even looking for pedals or yokes or any of that stuff yet, and won't be for some time.

What's your point? I don't care that [insert random place I'm likely never to visit] looks better in Bing Maps than Google. Everywhere I fly is much better mapped by Google. Should Bing Maps just remain crap where it is crap just because it's hypothetically better somewhere else? At the very least, Microsoft being an American company should have decent AMERICAN maps.

Let me drop this here AGAIN so you can see just how crap Bing maps is. Go ahead, defend that mess.

Not related to Bing, anybody noticing this weird effect at higher altitudes? It's a gap in the autogen trees. It "follows" my plane, with the gap filling in as scenery moves further away, so it's not a simple LOD thing (which I have maxed out). I've tried a variety of settings, but this gap remains. It's more noticeable when seen in motion. It's not a game-breaker, but it is a "wart" on an otherwise beautiful rendering of scenery.

If anyone is looking for pedals, amazon still has the pedals from Thustmaster's T16000M FCs set: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster...&keywords=hotas+pedals&qid=1599226553&sr=8-26

I've read people complaining they are a tad too small though. I personally will stick to using Joystick twist. It's a bummer as twist seems to be the first thing to fail on any joystick (my 6 months old X56 joystick is already showing premature signs of twist failure, and my previous T16000M joy lost twist after just a few weeks), but I hate having stuff on the floor.

Yup, stuff is expected to arrive in November, when holiday shopping will probably make things difficult still.

Oh well, we'll survive. :)

As long as you stick to fixed wing, joystick twist is fine. It does the job for dynamic adjustments like when rolling on the ground, and for cruise adjustments, you want to use trim anyhow.

For rotary however, joy twist is the best way to go mad, since it's close to impossible to twist a stick without also producing vertical/horizontal inputs that will be mapped to your cyclic. I'd be tempted to use something like the throttle slider instead, if only to separate it from the stick/cyclic. Plus the slider would make for a natural trim.

Well, looking at it, I might actually go for the VKB pedals if I decide to get a set. I've certainly been impressed with the build quality of the stick. Probably not on the cards right now - but dammit, having looked at them I can see me persuading myself that they'd be the answer to all my problems by the end of the day! 😂

As expected, Asobo have released their short & medium term development roadmap. There's another patch coming this month sometime.

What's that?

Announced here:

Still not released for some reason.

Unfortunately my initial attempts to do this have been thwarted by a bug. :(

Loading any of the .pln files for the trips results in a GetIdByName() error and then CTD. At least on my system. Your mileage may vary.

You can set up the trips manually (he gives all the details) but that's a faff and less than ideal, and I haven't really figured out how to add waypoints into a trip. Will probably leave it now until the next patch.
