ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I have had notification that my DK2 is about to ship. I must admit until now I didn't want to get too excited as I knew it would be a bit of a wait. As a consequence I am not up to date on whats involved in setting it up when it hopefully turns up next week. I went to page one of this thread but realised that a lot of the information is probably way out of date. I don't really want to wade through all 432 pages  so was wondering is there an FAQ or guide posted anywhere with details on how to get it running with the latest beta and what the pitfalls are.

1080P or 4k? I am tempted to get the 1080P oculus at release. However I think they my quickly replace it with a 4k version.

[Citation needed]!

No announcement has been made by oculus about the resolution of cv1 or even the recent crescent bay prototype.
The most credible speculation is that cv1 will be 1440p, mid to late 2015. 4K would need an insane GPU.

Setting up the DK2 is really easy.
First of all install the software from the developer website of Oculus. Then start the software and set up your IPD via the advanced menu (click on measure)

Click on Tools and 'rift Display mode', select 'Extend Desktop to HMD'.
Click again on tools and there also on advanced, click on 'pause service'.

Rightclick your desktop and select the winodws resolution options, there set your dk2 to landscape mode and inverted (or however it is called in english, not just landscape mode but the one turned 180°).

Now start Elite, go into the graphics options and enable the rift mode, I'd also disable ambient occlusion, anti aliasing and blur. Set your graphics options so that the game runs at 75fps or as close as you can get.

If the game starts on your monitor instead of the rift you can simply drag the window to the right (start in windowed mode in that case and switch to fullscreen on the rift) and put it onto the rift display that way (or set the rift as primary display in the windows options I guess)

edit

p.s.

The 1080p dk2 is not consumer ready and will never be at this resolution, it is simply too low for anyone but enthusiasts. Trust me, whatever you have seen in the rift emulators or anyone is saying, it is worse.

(just the resolution, the overall experience is absolutely great but no average consumer will ever endure the low screen resolution for any amount of time)

p.p.s.

Don't forget to connect all the cables both cables from the camera (one to computer USB , one to the rift) and the two cables from the rift (USB and HDMI) before any software setup. You don't need the power cable unless your USB ports are low power.

If everything is done right the rifts led will glow blue, if not it will be yellow (don't forget to turn on the rift! the camera is always on).

Hi guys, would like to check my FPS. With the new ED Beta/SDK - is there is any way to see it in game or do I need to record with Fraps and then watch later?
Thanks for your help. M

No need to record with fraps (would degrade your performance somewhat, so I wouldn't recommend it for an actual benchmark) - just bind a key to benchmarking and you're set.

You could of course also use MSI Afterburner or any similar monitoring tool.

[edit]: welly beat me to it

Yeah, remove the left lens, press CTRL+F and look in the bottom left.

As posted a few pages ago (boy this thread moves quick), here's my thoughts.

Not really anything you guys probably didn't know, as this thread has told you it all, but if anything it just confirms it from another person :) the resolution improvements alone are worth credit. It's not perfect, sure, but it is at least now playable for extended periods of time. The game now "works" in the Rift, if you can get around any issues of full immersion (ie. not being able to easily locate a keyboard!)...

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I tried Fraps last night and it worked great on my monitor but didn't show on the DK2. Just to double check - should Fraps and MSI Afterburner simply work in game, or like CTRL+F do you need to remove a lens to see them?

Fraps FPS show up in the corner you defined them in, so unless you take out a lens, you wont see them.

But it has the option to bind a key to benchmarking, you can either start/stop a benchmark by pressing it or set it to benchmark for x amount of time.

The results (avg, min and max FPS, total frames, duration and timestamp) can be found in a .txt file in your fraps folder (might have changed a little - my version of Fraps is from 2007).

Been waiting for you to post your video since I saw you "went green" - and you do it while I'm at work. :p

Anyway, yes, the game "works" in the DK2... providing you're not planning on doing any exploration, or using the system map... (anyone know a workaround for this?)

It uploaded over night but then I had to do all that custom thumbnail nonsense because, hey, no-one takes you seriously if you don't have custom thumbnails  :p

I wonder if you could get GlovePIE/VoiceAttack to do "text-to-speech"? Might be something to try. A special command such as "dictate" which will then echo everything you say as a typed word or letter? Then a closing command, say "dictate" again, and you've back to normal operation...

You're right that the galaxy map is the one area I forgot to cover that isn't so hot in the Rift from a practical perspective. I honestly very rarely use it, as I'm not the explorer/trader type... but I can see your point.

Galaxy map is usable if you set up your controller mappings properly.

System map is unusable, as it places the camera inside the star and doesn't let you move. :(

Thanks for that!

And to answer your question, no, it's not helped while dealing with the wait...

But saying that as I write this I got shipping notification from ups! :D

I use one called rivatuner. It lets you specify an offset from the corner, ie you can specify to make it 300x300 pixels away from the corner, which then means it's visible on the Rift without removing the lens etc.

You can even set the colour of the overlay, so you can make it orange if you like to keep in-theme with the game's hud ;)
