That's why interiors are needed, a safe room to escape to when the loonies come knockingxx cough, splutter xx Wha?? and miss out on all the crazy??![]()
It worked for VR... so...
Seriously though, why can't we even walk around our cockpits? Like VR, walking in ships could be just the most basic implementation at launch. Just let us walk around the already finished cockpits if only to give that feeling of finally being a commander in a ship.
Alright then everyone... just 200 pages more to go until basic ship interiors!
Edits:
Just to be clear, I’m not proposing any gameplay with this, just the ability to look around the cockpit on foot rather than being stuck with looking around with just the vanity camera.
Also, to those saying it won’t add gameplay value, that’s true...this is why I’m comparing it to the VR threads that got basic VR implemented. VR doesn’t add gameplay value either, it’s a platform, like Mac OS, that people prefer to play on. In fact, removing VR support doesn’t even prevent players from continuing to play the game, unlike Mac OS players.
VR wasn’t planned on being supported at Odyssey launch, but after a lot of complaints and threats... and a 200 page thread... it now is. Again, adds no gameplay for the vast majority players, but a little time is being spent to throw it in the expansion and gameplay value wasn’t the point... cockpit legs with no extra gameplay is all I’m proposing.
FDev have dev diaries from the early days (2014/15) talking about ongoing work on walking in ships. If those weren’t total lies, I’m just assuming the effort to implement basic cockpit walking is low after 4-5 years. If not, I’m fine with it being left out. I would rather have the expansion released on time.
If you want to get their attention you need a flashing Avatar. Since Blue/Orange has became the standard for VR campaign, perhaps you'd like me to make you an equally if not slightly more garish yellow purple flashy avatar for this campaign?
Elite must have XYZ too or I riot.
aha! (yellow was horrendous!)

Awesome, thanks for the avatar![]()
Afraid you missed it. There was very nice crossplay going on between Windows and macOS and then, for the good of the game, ....CROSSPLAY OR RIOT!
Ah, but as is reasonably often stated on the forum, it's FDevs game not ours, and DBOBE is (or was) excited by ship interiors. But my fear is that ED now has sold to enough players that objectively DONT want it because it is "boring" etc that it may not be comercially viable to do it.
If 75% of people would hate it and demand the fade to black back, then it's a hard sell to justify all that work for the 25% (of whom I am one) just for immersion.
We shall see.

i cant get it to upload to my avatar!! typical!
Not sure but doesn't it take 12hrs to apply to an existing avatar?aha! (yellow was horrendous!)

The newsletter that mentioned 'ship interiors' as a possible expansion suggested it would be an iteration torwards walking outside.
My guess is they've simply decided since there's more initial gameplay to do outside that will make a better expansion intially and refine FPS to be used in interiors later, much of which will probably involve traversing to other ships anyway, so why not iterate on that?
Unlike VR it isn't something they've already done the work on and can just throw together a compromise. Changing your avatars is not going to have Frontier throw together the vast interior maps, textures, moving-parts, sound design, physics, networking issues and additional QA etc in the next six months or so.
I hope so.. however I will disagree with you on one point. I actually think many of the old timers who wanted ED precisely because of the original game (just guessing tho I can only speak for myself with certainty) would be just fine with ship interiors and the added fiddling about with it. Ship interiors was always part of the vision of ED.You may get the wrong impression on this forum because the forum is mostly home to the "menus and docking computers" demographic, who are mostly fueled by XX century Elite nostalgia and are usually hostile to anything outside of the original Elite scope.
But rest assured there is an overwhelming support for ship interiors throughout the much larger social platforms, and FD is perfectly aware of it. Besides FD has said in the past that ship interiors would be a thing as well as station interiors and planet surfaces, so it will come in time just like the rest.
What, David Braben's been writing cheques* that Frontier can't cash? But the whole thing about you or your multi-crew running around your ship while combat happens, doing ship repairs or repelling borders, etc. No way. They haven't got the time and, to be honest, that in itself is at least a years work. (if it's possible at all).
I don't think he 'Chris Roberts' the situation. What, David Braben's been writing cheques* that Frontier can't cash?
*To find out what a cheque is ask an aged relative.
