Ship Interiors 'not at launch' for Odyssey (worth a shot)

i saw the sidewinder interior vid in the thread below and yea, must admit would love ship interiors

and i don't get the argument that "if you want interiors there are plenty of other games with them" i'm sure their are but they are not this game and I am invested in this game!

It worked for VR... so...

Seriously though, why can't we even walk around our cockpits? Like VR, walking in ships could be just the most basic implementation at launch. Just let us walk around the already finished cockpits if only to give that feeling of finally being a commander in a ship.

Alright then everyone... just 200 pages more to go until basic ship interiors!

Edits:
Just to be clear, I’m not proposing any gameplay with this, just the ability to look around the cockpit on foot rather than being stuck with looking around with just the vanity camera.

Also, to those saying it won’t add gameplay value, that’s true...this is why I’m comparing it to the VR threads that got basic VR implemented. VR doesn’t add gameplay value either, it’s a platform, like Mac OS, that people prefer to play on. In fact, removing VR support doesn’t even prevent players from continuing to play the game, unlike Mac OS players.

VR wasn’t planned on being supported at Odyssey launch, but after a lot of complaints and threats... and a 200 page thread... it now is. Again, adds no gameplay for the vast majority players, but a little time is being spent to throw it in the expansion and gameplay value wasn’t the point... cockpit legs with no extra gameplay is all I’m proposing.

FDev have dev diaries from the early days (2014/15) talking about ongoing work on walking in ships. If those weren’t total lies, I’m just assuming the effort to implement basic cockpit walking is low after 4-5 years. If not, I’m fine with it being left out. I would rather have the expansion released on time.

If you want to get their attention you need a flashing Avatar. Since Blue/Orange has became the standard for VR campaign, perhaps you'd like me to make you an equally if not slightly more garish yellow purple flashy avatar for this campaign?

aha! (yellow was horrendous!)

why?

well because of this..

Learning that we will not have any ship interiors is a bit of a blow for ED and Odyssey.

ever since the kick starter days i believed the first "steps" onto a planet would be by leaving the seat and walking through the ship and out the door, with Horizons we had the SRV and a black loading screen but there was a small hint of the CMDR standing up, a little gesture perhaps of what was to come

giphy.gif

unfortunately ED have gone a different track and prioritized other avenues and ignored alot of people, even fans were able to create their own interiors as shown here 1.5 years ago, with sound!

for a true "Neil Armstrong" moment this involves getting out your chair and walking to the ships door, no black screen or infill is going to cut it, its a reversed videogif of someone else work but this is what i expect, but walking from the cockpit! actually walking out to the planet, the ships doors opening onto the landscape, not a stupid black screen.

nothing else is going to cut it other than to ruin that "Neil Armstrong" moment, pretty much the same as black loading screen to SRV we have now :(

dont release another half baked update, delay it another year if you have to and add interiors so we can have a proper landing and get out the ship for the first time, properly, and as it should be.

dont half bake it... let it cook.... please... do it properly

That walk around the sidewinder is simply amazing. I 100% would support that kind of detail even if it made getting in and out of your ship a little slower.
Who ever did that work deserves a shot at being paid at FD doing it imo. (making the huge assumption that cobra engine has equivalent tools to make interior)
That said FD can't do everything at once and I have had my toys out of my pram moment so am not going to get my pitch fork out again for a while.
My fear however isn't that FD are not capable of doing that, I am sure they can esp if it is only accessible when landed or moving slowly in space (so not super cruise etc for networking reasons).
But my fear is that ED now has sold to enough players that objectively DONT want it because it is "boring" etc that it may not be comercially viable to do it.
If 75% of people would hate it and demand the fade to black back, then it's a hard sell to justify all that work for the 25% (of whom I am one) just for immersion.
We shall see.

Ah, but as is reasonably often stated on the forum, it's FDevs game not ours, and DBOBE is (or was) excited by ship interiors.

Still poor old DBOBE's memory may be fading, length of time, old age, etc ..... or in the depth of Fortress Frontier, the next expansion team may be hard at work.

Common fellas, if you are even remotely feeling a bond with your ship (non sexually of course), than add an [SI] (ship interiors) or [VR][SI] to your name and apply that sexy new avatar.

Like VR, walking in ships could be just the most basic implementation at launch (cockpits). Just let us walk around :)
i cant get it to upload to my avatar!! typical!

Not sure but doesn't it take 12hrs to apply to an existing avatar?

The newsletter that mentioned 'ship interiors' as a possible expansion suggested it would be an iteration torwards walking outside.

My guess is they've simply decided since there's more initial gameplay to do outside that will make a better expansion intially and refine FPS to be used in interiors later, much of which will probably involve traversing to other ships anyway, so why not iterate on that?

Unlike VR it isn't something they've already done the work on and can just throw together a compromise. Changing your avatars is not going to have Frontier throw together the vast interior maps, textures, moving-parts, sound design, physics, networking issues and additional QA etc in the next six months or so.

You may get the wrong impression on this forum because the forum is mostly home to the "menus and docking computers" demographic, who are mostly fueled by XX century Elite nostalgia and are usually hostile to anything outside of the original Elite scope.

But rest assured there is an overwhelming support for ship interiors throughout the much larger social platforms, and FD is perfectly aware of it. Besides FD has said in the past that ship interiors would be a thing as well as station interiors and planet surfaces, so it will come in time just like the rest.

That's what I believe as well.

It's all down to the time they have left to be honest. It would be nice to be able to get up from the chair, walk around the bridge, go to a turbolift and then have the lift options ;-
  1. Exit Hatch and Gangplank
  2. SRV Bay (if fitted)
  3. Fighter Bay (if fitted)
and the lift takes you there.

But the whole thing about you or your multi-crew running around your ship while combat happens, doing ship repairs or repelling borders, etc. No way. They haven't got the time and, to be honest, that in itself is at least a years work. (if it's possible at all).

I hope so.. however I will disagree with you on one point. I actually think many of the old timers who wanted ED precisely because of the original game (just guessing tho I can only speak for myself with certainty) would be just fine with ship interiors and the added fiddling about with it. Ship interiors was always part of the vision of ED.
My gut feeling is it is not the old timers you (or FD) would need to convince

What, David Braben's been writing cheques* that Frontier can't cash? ;)

*To find out what a cheque is ask an aged relative.
